Dream Catcher -> First day Trout Destinations (3/28/2008 1:07:55 PM)

Where & why do you fish on the first day of trout? How far do you travel ? Do you fish with a certain group of people every year or do you just go to drink lots of alcohol & enjoy a camp fire &  friends ????? Are you just there to fish?

Dream Catcher -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/28/2008 1:14:38 PM)

I travel 100 miles north to fish Tionesta Creek with friends & relatives every year. I usually go to party because I do not like crowds but I will wet a line 8am -9am done! Then the fun begins . Perhaps I'll see some of you at Couger Bob's for a cold 1? I come home Sunday night , quit drinking & start fishing for real on Monday when I usually burn a vacation day to catch large quanities of left over trout from Sat-Sundays barage. The campfire & revisiting with old friends is better entertainment than the fishing at camp ; which will be in full swing when the weekend crowds have fizzled out. Good luck to everyone whatever you're intentions are on opening day of binge drinking & trout chasin. - DC

I wake up, put my waders on, walk across the street and fish spring creek till 8am, then walk 100 yrds and fish Bald Eagle! Cant beat where I live, no need to travel. Its funny seeing people standing in the bald eagle less then 100 yrds from spring creek waiting for hours on end to fish. Go fish spring till 8am dont stand there and freeze to "save your spot" because after you get fed up and walk away, ill be right behind you to show you what you left ;)

nut -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/28/2008 4:16:02 PM)

headed to juniata river to get away from the crowds, might luck into some carp or a few walleye. of corse our trout comes inthe 12th of april. where we will do the same thing or hit sayers dam. trout season for me is over. mine lasts from right after deer season to the first day of trout. don't like fishing in the spring or summer, too many snakes! i might hit a stream or two if it's chilly.

Trout About -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/28/2008 4:19:26 PM)

I'm probably heading to the same bluegill pond that I fished last year on the trout opener........or to Erie for some smallies.

Headed to tionesta creek too.  I love to drink but normally the first weekend is more about fishing for me.  Although i spent a morning throwing up in tionesta creek a few years ago, so who knows.  Cougars is always a classic destination.  My neighbor whose camp I go to for the first weekend went down to watch the pens game and then came back to get me and my buddy last year, we went to amuse him and he more or less amused us.  Always good times!  Fish with the same guys every year and the same creek every year.  Its definitely a tradition, but after a long winter its just nice to get away and hang with good friends...

krott243 -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/28/2008 5:01:20 PM)

Elk Creek, Rick Road.  Been getting to the same spot in the hole at 5 every year, since I was 8 years old.  Its crowded, but I grew up fishing around a lot of the same guys who will still fish it and its kind of a tradition for me.

Bull Lifter -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/28/2008 7:59:48 PM)

Probably no where..stockies arent my thing. they maybe some fun to catch...thats about all. wherever you go you see some nut doing something stupid...flip the boat...cast in before 8...so on...can be a real show. If I fish that day..ill be going to a lake not for trout. Or to work. ha.

Mikastorm -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/29/2008 10:23:42 AM)

Well with the price of gas and a wedding the week after, I,ll be hanging close and hitting the dam at Shenango. No need to wait for the clock to strike. Alot of room to fish. Always catch a veriety of fish too. Those big fall suckers are a tough fish to bring in on 6 lb. test. Lose a few flies every year to them. Never know what your going to catch.

Timachro -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/29/2008 2:56:45 PM)

Personally, I never go on opening day.  I like to go the weekend after opening day, It's a lot less crowded.

Wally Cat -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/29/2008 8:36:00 PM)

For about 10 years now my son and I have fished the same spot on the Loyalhanna. There are days we've fished the entire day and times we fished only till noon due to other obligations. This year he has to work so I'll be there, same spot, and do my thing solo. We would keep what we caught(except for the first one, it always went back in) and have them for dinner that evening. All trout fishing after that was C & R unless I hurt them.

doubletaper -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/29/2008 10:04:27 PM)

fish the first day the same place my grandpa took me back when i was around 9. same place i took my 4 kids the first day. now i take my grandson for the first day. where else? little neshannock!! great place to take youngsters the first day. (the old timers called it carbine crick?)

venomous grin -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/29/2008 10:41:51 PM)

I arrive at Dunlap Creek Lake at 9pm on friday every year and my same friends arrive thereafter, we sit around shootin B.S. all night while we cook on the grill and have a couple cold ones, fishing is only secondary on this day, for this is the day for most of the time I see these friends, but my boy is there to fish, so he sleeps in my truck while we have our good time....its more like Fishmas Eve

Tacklebuster -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/30/2008 5:25:23 PM)

Always hit a few places close to home the first day sometimes it seems there is more driving than fishing. Gonna try something a little different this year and stay at one creek and fish it the whole day.

CRAPPIE_SLAYER -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/31/2008 8:46:57 PM)

I fish kinzua creek quite often in the summer and decided to try it the first day last year with a buddy of mine. What a zoo!! Think I'll stay around home the first day this year.

matthoops33 -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/31/2008 10:19:51 PM)

I will be going up to my cabin in Brockway, Pa for opening day. Great area with alot of fishable streams (spring creek, rattlesnake creek, little toby creek, and others). Not to mention if the trout bite isnt on you can just head down to the Clarion and fish for smallies. I guess this is my spot because this is practically where I grew up. I've spent countless hunting and fishing seasons at the cabin. But last year a 28-inch brown was caught on Little Toby.

sugarfuzz12 -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/31/2008 10:42:22 PM)

i go to a newly stocked creek with holdovers from years before when it was stocked but after a few hours i like to hit a few other streams

cp13 -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (3/31/2008 11:04:32 PM)

im still undecided, i want to try and find somewhere where my grandpa wont rip someones ear off with his fly pole..probably impossible...beware erie county if you see a man with camo waders a fly vest and a fly pole that is somewhat deaf, stay back 50 feet...im usually at cascade creek though...

Mountian Man -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (4/1/2008 2:01:53 PM)

First Day of trout is way to OVERRATED just for 12" fish that were stocked

D-nymph -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (4/1/2008 3:15:34 PM)

I skip opening day any more, too crowded.

Now I go the second or third weekend, and host a 4 day blowout fishing party with my buddies at my cabin on the Fayette/Somerset county line.

mxdad66 -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (4/1/2008 8:33:42 PM)

Mikastorm -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (4/5/2008 11:00:59 PM)

See ya there.

DanesDad -> RE: First day Trout Destinations (4/6/2008 12:43:18 AM)

Any of the following:  Laurel Hill Creek, Jones Mill Run, Loyalhanna Creek, Little Coon Creek, Salmon Creek, Coon Creek, West Branch Hicks Run, Turtle Creek, Dunlap Creek, West Creek (if stocked), Portage Creek, Four Mile Run, or possibly an Erie trib.  Depends on my work schedule.
