The Cleveland Browns have been very actively in the free agent market lately. They signed three key free agents recently;  Green Bay defensive tackle Corey Williams was first to sign,  former pro bowler (2 of last 3 years), from the Detroit Lions, DE Shaun Rogers and WR Donte Stallworth, from the NE Patriots.  They complete the Browns free agent signings.  Plus they re-signed QB Derek Anderson.  The Browns first pick is not until round 4 of the draft (April 26 + 27).

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost guard Alan Faneca to the Jets (free agent).  They added a very quick third string RB Mewelde Moore, a former Viking.  He will replace kick returner Alan Rossum, now a 49er.  The Post-Gazette says that next the Steelers are considering former Brown and Falcon safety Cris Crocker.

Who is going to be drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round?

it's tough to build a team through free agency. the steelers build through the draft, which has been very successful to say the least. on paper it looks good for the browns, but you never know....

For what it's worth, Chris Mortensen said the other day that, through these recent signings, this puts the Browns with the Patriots, Chargers and Colts in the AFC.

I agree, but it comes down to defensive pressure on the QB.....just how the Giants won the Super bowl.

Stallworth isn't that impressive, but he wont be asked to do more than he is capable of with Edwards and Winslow on the team.  It's always good to have good lineman.  That's where the game is won and lost and Cleveland has been doing well in personell in that area lately.  Anderson may prove to be really good, especially with good lineman.

I know it's hockey season, but just read that the Stillers picked up Justin Hartwig from the Carolina Panthers.  Yeah, that same team that was 29th best in the pass, and made the Stiller's pass blocking look All Pro...

This isn't the best off season..

Indeed, it's not the best offseason for the steelers and free agents.  But the Steelers are at the very bottom of the league in cap space.  The Ben Roethlisberger deal is a big move though.

The thing that nobody talks about is this:  When the steelers for the past 5-6 years keep restructuring these contracts to make cap room in order to re-sign their own players, it has a long term affect.  Those players' cap numbers don't just go away, they get extended over a longer time frame.  As time passes they start to add up, and you get into the spot they are in now.  They need to improve in some areas and they don't have the money available to do so.  It's like only paying the minimum balance on your credit card.  You get by for a while, but that money keeps building up, until you can't get rid of your debt.

Everyone always says "just re-structure some contracts, and sign a big free agent or two".  But it doesn't work that easy.

They have a big choice to make.  Either continue on the same path, be a borderline playoff team, and maybe get hot and lucky at the right time, like they did a couple years ago.

or

cut some veterans, (some combination of 4 or 5 of M. Smith, Hampton, A. Smith, Keisel, Ward, Simmons, Farrior, Foote, Mahan, etc) probably stink for 2-3 years, Get high draft choices, take their lumps and re-build.

I can see why they choose th eformer, but the latter may be a better course of action.

And as far as the Browns go, I'm not a fan, obviously.  But Braylon Edwards is an awesome player.

guys, the steelers build through the draft. always have and always will. it has been VERY successful. i am not the least bit surprised that they haven't made any BIG moves to sign free agents.....

Huge Stillers fan,,,,,,,,,,but wow!  Jamal Lewis in the backfield, Edwards, Winslow, Stallworth, Jerevicius running routes, Cribbs returning every other kick for a touchdown.  Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach protecting.  Wimbley and now Rogers comming after the QB?  Throw that in with Pittsburgh's schedule.....Browns win the division. The only question is if Derek Anderson can duplicate last year.  I personally don't see it being a problem, after all, Edwards catches anything thrown even close to him.  Again, not a Browns fan, but you gotta love great football.  Hats off to Cleveland.

The Browns are looking very good.  I have my doubts the Stillers can hold them off this year. 

You definitely wrapped up the Stiller's philosophy.  It is entertaining for them to be in the upper 10% of teams every year.  So, their way of doing things does seem to keep them up there.  

I think they should have addressed the O line in last year's draft (said it repeatedly then, so no hind sight comments please).  Ben's play 2 years ago, was not all because of his injury issues.  Two pass rushing specialists back to back picks?  Maybe it will pay off in 4-5 years?  I know they build through the draft, but their drafting hasn't seemed to be the same old Stiller build a good team drafts (Pre Tomlin - but he'll likely be the scapegoat).  There have been many more busts than successes.  Not really talking skill players, Ben and Santonio are great players, but one is a 6 overall I think and the other is mid teen overall... almost no-brainers.  Most O & D linemen or even DBs or LBs aren't going to get a bust tag, for being drafted 3-6 round and not making it, but they haven't seemingly been very good at this as of late.  They seem to be much better at getting lucky with the undrafted free agents, which you wonder how long that luck will last.

Maybe they'll surprise me on the O line.  Drop one of the better guards out there, I doubt you're going to get much better?  Signing a guy, that was cut by one of the leagues worst lines, shows a sign of desperation if you ask me.  I see them as a .500 team right now.  Their draft pick is going to likely not contribute much if at all this season.  I thought the Stiller's philosophy was win the war in the trenches.  It hasn't been like that for a while.  Even the Superbowl run, which featured much more passing, wasn't dominating the line.  Not that I miss, the ground and pound approach, their lines on both side of the field where among the top for a while.  They are definitely not even close right now.

Now, I do think their defense is going to do just fine.  Aaron Smith back, and some experience for the younger guys, a few years of quality play left in Farrior and Hampton.  Not sure if they are going to be like Chicago of a few years ago, and out score the opponent's offense, especially the schedule of next year.  The two Ohio offenses are pretty good too.

By the season opener, I'll likely see them 16-0 for sure though!!!
The Stillers build by the draft...  but they also WIN by dominating the line play.  That's been their bread and butter for a long time.  Even with a back like Willie, he needs at least a crease.  Ben is great on the run and breaking tackles, but it is only so long until he gets some sort of injury.  And we know that he is not the same guy while he is playing injured.

The main reason the Steelers have been so successful is simple, they keep the same coach for years and do not make rash decisions. Noll was a great coach and Cowher was definitely a very good coach, but the main factor is stability. Teams like the Browns and Dolphins that fire their coach every other season do not have the same level of success, because the coaches know they are always on the chopping block. They try to win now and forget about the long term consequences. What do you guys think will happen to Romeo if the Browns go 8-8 with all of this new additions and barely miss the playoffs again? He knows he will be fired, so he will do anything he can to win in the short term. This may mean playing injured players, signing multiple free agents and backloading the cap, etc. The Browns may have a good season, but it is impossible to sign all the players they have without having cap issues in the future. The Steelers approach has worked for a while and the only time I do not agree with it is when a guy like Randy Moss comes available. There are a few players that should be on every team's short list and if they are available at the right price during free agency, you should try and make a move. The Pats picking him up this past season was one of the greatest moves of all time.

You can throw all of it out the window.  Free agency, big name coaches, payrolls, draft choices, and everything else that is supposed to mean something in the NFL.  Was Jerry Rice, Big Ben, or Tom Brady #1 picks?  No.  The hottest team at the right time will win the super bowl.  The giants proved that this year.  Giants fans had to have one of the most monumental attitude changes toward their coach and QB from the first few weeks of the season (actually years before that) until this past february.  Just remember, Trent Dilfer has a ring and Marino doesn't.  I'm sure the experts seen that coming.

Mahan filled a need, they said when they brough colclough in that he and taylor were DUMB with all caps and that they were a risk because of it.  Keisel deserves a big contract, when you have a good defense it is because your dlinemen make tackles, not just sacks, but tackles. 

The steeler front office philosophy seems to be that that #2 speed/athlete type reciever is easy enough to draft every few years (meaning there are lots of them out there) that it doesn't make sense to pay one into a huge contract when you can draft rookies to do it.  As for the other ones, Unless they hire Jesus of Nazereth as thier personel director they are going to make poor choices in the draft, just like every other team.

What need did Mahan fill? The need for a less than medicore center that gets run over like a cone at the PennDOT Driver's License place. The Steelers front office is pretty good, but they are far from the best in the league. Just like every other team, the Steelers make mistakes and I think the biggest mistake of all time in the entire league was the Steelers cutting Johnny Unitas. I said it before and I will say it again, the Steelers win because of consistency. There is alot to be said about keeping the same coach and not signing big free agents, but the other way also works. Look at the Giants, before they had Plaxico they were a middle of the road team in the NFC. The Pats were getting ready to re-build before they picked up Moss and Welker. I think you get the idea, and if you didn't already notice Sean Mahan is the worst center to every play for the Steelers.

I will give it your team, the Browns are back in a big way. They are no longer the whipping boy of the Steelers and I expect some close games this season. I am sold on the Browns improvement on offense, but I still think the Browns have some issues on defense. I think the Steelers have the edge when you look at the teams overall, but the Browns offense is downright scary. Winslow, Edwards, and Stallworth will be very hard to stop and I think Anderson is developing into a fine quarterback. The Steelers biggest issue this season will be the schedule. Here is my AFC North Prediction:

Steelers 9-7 (Steelers win division by tiebreaker and split with the Browns, they win at Heinz field but lose on the road)
Browns 9-7
Ravens 8-8
Bungles 6-10

To answer your final question, I think the Steelers will go O-line in the first round and I would say they take Jeff Otah from Pitt if he is still there or Brandon Albert from Virginia if he is available. I think the Steelers are also looking a Mario Urrutia from Louisville as a later pick to fill Ben's request for a bigger receiver.

PEARLAND, Texas — Cleveland Browns defensive back Kenny Wright was arrested Thursday after police said he led them on a quarter-mile foot case that began in the parking lot of the police station.

Wright, 30, faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawful restraint, a misdemeanor charge of evading arrest and a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana. He remained in the Pearland City Jail on Thursday night pending a bond hearing Friday.

Pearland police said officers were investigating a disturbance in the police station parking lot around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. When officers approached Wright, he took off running and was eventually caught in a nearby subdivision.

Sgt. Roy Castillo said in a statement that "we had people on scene pretty fast and I believe because of our quick response time and the mental and physical toughness of our officers to catch offenders, we were able to get him in custody quickly and safely."

Police said they found 1.875 ounces of marijuana in Wright's vehicle.

A jail official told The Associated Press he did not know if Wright has an attorney.

If found guilty on the unlawful restraint charge, Wright faces up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. If found guilty on the other charges, Wright faces up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine on each charge.

Wright, who attended Northwestern State in Louisiana, was a fourth round pick in the 1999 draft by the Minnesota Vikings. The nine-year veteran has also played for Houston, Jacksonville and Washington. He has seven career interceptions.

Houston television station KRIV first reported the arrest.

Pearland is about 15 miles south of Houston.
