So....Charlie Batch breaks his collarbone tonight.  Rookie Oregon QB Dennis Dixon is the backup now.
Should they try to get QB Chad Pennington to back up Ben?

Well here are my thoughts on the Steelers first pre-season game:

1.) Willie Parker is fine and I have no concerns about him this season. He looked like Fast Willie again.
2.) The Steelers O-Line was much better than expected and the first team O-Line helped Big Ben and the offense score with ease.
3.) Mendenhall is going to be a big addition to the offense, he looked strong and had some good runs. He will definitely get some playing time and make an impact.
4.) Santonio Holmes was superb, he looked like Steve Smith out there. Let's hope this is his breakout year.
5.) The Steelers defense was ho-hum, good as usual but the loss of Polamalu was evident with the big cushions by the dbs. The Steelers are not the same team against the pass without Polamalu and they need him back soon.
6.) Jeff Reed nailed three field goals and is looking great.
7.) Dennis Dixon is the second coming of Tee Martin at this point, so the loss of Batch is very troublesome. If Ben goes down I think the Steelers season is in the tank unless Dixon can learn the offense in a hurry or we sign a veteran backp. With that being said, Pennington is no longer available and it is slim pickins for a back-up right now. Where is St. Pierre when you need him?
8.) Overall I was impressed and the biggest surprise I think was how strong Gary Russel looked. He was breaking tackles left and right and just running over people. The Steelers may finally have a new third down back. Oh and by the way Melowede Moore sucks and he is the reason Batch is out. Did anybody see that play it was pitiful?

Track,
I agree with most of the things you pointed out.
What is your preseason prediction of the AFC North and the Super Bowl?
.....anybody else have an opiniopn?

Steelers signed Byron Leftwich to replace the injured Batch.

Could've easily done worse this far into camp, I guess.

Leftwich is only 28 years old.  I think it was a wise pickup.

Big Ben is 26. (born in 1982)

Here are my AFC North Predictions (and keep in mind these are from a biased Steelers fan)

Steelers 10-6 (Steelers win in a crazy tiebreaker and get to the Super Bowl)
Browns 10-6 (Browns make the playoffs as a wildcard and lose to the Chargers in the first round)
Bengals 9-7
Ravens 6-10

AFC Championship: Pittsburgh at New England, Pittsburgh wins with a last second field goal and goes to the Super Bowl 27-24

NFC Championship: Dallas at New York, Dallas wins big 31-14

Super Bowl: It will be a historic rematch of two of the 5 time Super Bowl Champions (Steelers vs. Cowboys) Steelers win as Big Ben proves all the critics wrong with a Super Bowl MVP performance final score 17-10

The signing of Leftwich is great and who knows Batch is getting old, maybe Leftwich could be the Steelers next career backup. I am really glad they did not sign Culpepper because he would have been a cancer in the locker room and he is washed up.

Now I remember why I usually just went to bed last year instead of watching the MNF games.  Will someone please tell the jagoff announcers to STFU.  WOW

The signing of Leftwich was done strictly out of necessity. The guy stinks. He moves like he is stuck in mud and it takes him 25 minutes to release a throw. The only team he ever had any real success against was the team that now employs him.
Say a prayer that he never has to enter a game in a Steelers uniform.

I hope he does play some, and he will. That will prove you wrong since he was #1 in Jacksonville, then got hurt and couldn't get his job back from Garrard. Then he was #1 in Atlanta, then got hurt again ending his season. They would have done a lot worse with Culpepper and no one else looked any better. Give us some suggestion of who you though was more qualified.

time will tell if he can handle getting by if Ben goes down. he's here because Batch is hurt and Ken Anderson wants him here. if Batch doesnt get hurt Leftwich is watching from home or MAYBE backs up elsewhere.

qualified doesnt always fit with the salary cap.

what about Bubby Brister???!!! Kordell Stewart??? Kent Graham???

ever hear Frank Caliendo(sp) do John Madden impersonation about Brett Favre. imo it is hilarious.

If he's so good, then why didn't any of the 31 other teams have him snatched up before the Steelers were lucky enough to get him? Why? Because he stinks and nobody would even look at him except as a last resort. Which is exactly what happened with the Steelers.
You better hope he never sees the field in a game that counts.

Because of his injury prone career. That is why he is better than Batch as a backup.

Injury prone career. That's funny. He did squat when he was healthy which I'll grant you wasn't very often. Look man, him being unemployed as little as one week ago tells you all you need to know about how highly he is thought of in the NFL.
You can put him in the category of the Ryan Leafs, Akili Smiths and David Klinglers of the NFL world.

The Steelers looked pretty solid for a preseason game. Here are my thoughts:

1) The Steelers O-Line continues to impress (regardless of what ESPN tells us). Minus the one play that resulted in the Big Ben int and a few breakdowns that seemed to be because of miscommunication they looked strong. Hartwig should be the new center for the Steelers, Mahan continues to stink the place up. Did you see how much time Ben had when he threw the bomb to Santonio?
2) Special teams problems are back. Why can't we cover anyone?
3) Mendenhall is better than advertised, looked very strong again. If he keeps playing this way he will split carries with Fast Willie.
4) Roethlisberger is still a beast and that pass he had to Hines that made the top ten on sportscenter was insane. I have never seen a quarterback consistently make the plays under pressure that he does.
5) Santonio Holmes and Dennis Dixon are fast, very fast. I think we should use Dixon as the next slash. I am not sold on his abilities as a QB, but the guy can play. Disregard my previous Tee Martin comparison, Dennis Dixon = The next Kordell Stewart. Let's just hope Dixon is ok with the role, unlike Kordell.
6) Leftwhich looked slow and out of shape. Let's hope this is just rust and the guy will get better.
7) I have said it before and I will say it again, the Steelers pass defense is in trouble without Polamalu. Get well soon Troy or we are in for a long season.
8) Finally, the Steelers looked ok but I am concerned about the pass coverage. It will be very tough to compete against the Browns and other top passing offenses without defensive backs that can press. With Tyrone Carter, Ryan Clark, and Anthony Smith rotating in there at safety, our Db's are having to stay back and those cushions are making it tough. Plus I have not seen very many blitzes from the safety position and I think that is also due to Troy being hurt. Oh well, the situation is what it is and I would rather have Polamalu out now than during the real season, but it is concerning that he is hurt already. Overall, I would give the Steelers an 8/10 for this performance and let's hope they continue to improve.

Wild card bound. This is the preseason, no one should care. Pats are going to go 15-1 again,#1 seed. Colts or Pats in Super Bowl. Done.

The steeler secondary Stinks right now, with a capital "S".

I thought by the time guys make the pros they know how to tackle?  You know, wrap your arms around a guy and bring him down.  Not go for a highlight style flying shoulder, noly to completely miss your target.

James Harrison is an animal.  He might be their best defensive player.  After the game he was angry too.  "Some of the guys on this defense think they can just turn it on when the regular season starts.  They know who they are.  If they continue to have this attitude, we're not going to be a very good defense, and I'm not happy about it."

ouch.
