But with such a short career because of potential injury, what does one measely season mean to our future Mcdonalds cashiers? But I guess I wouldn't want to play multiple million dollar earning seasons when I could play just one for the big payday.

beerman -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/15/2008 11:36:38 PM)

There needs to be a rookie pay scale and a rookie should have to be signed by a certain date.   Such as July 1st to be able to play in the upcoming season.  I get tired of hearing about who is signed and who isn't.

Can somebody get this link to show?

*commander* -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/15/2008 11:39:27 PM)

imo a rookie pay scale would be awesome. what happened to proving yourself. all this guaranteed $$$ is crazy. how much initiative is lost with the $$$ already in the bank.

MuskyMastr -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/16/2008 12:18:42 AM)

Union rules guys, there is a leauge minimum.

*commander* -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/16/2008 4:38:37 PM)

i believe the league minimum for a rookie is $275,000, not the 27+ million guaranteed that i believe matt ryan is getting for being an unproven player who has never taken a snap yet in the NFL.

beerman -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/21/2008 10:18:54 AM)

The Cleveland Browns start camp this Wednesday.  (July 23)  Here is a good article that compares last year's team with this year team as they start.

"Browns Enter Camp A Much Different Team"  by Terry Pluto (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

When the Browns opened training camp a year ago, no one knew who would be the starting quarterback -- or if the Browns even had one worthy of the title. Brady Quinn was holding out, and coach Romeo Crennel was practicing his coin flipping to figure out who'd take the initial snaps in the first preseason game.

Charlie Frye was the early favorite to be the starter. Now the University of Akron product is battling to be a backup in Seattle. Derek Anderson is fresh off a season of 29 touchdown passes, and Quinn has shown so much promise, some fans believe he should start.
A year ago, General Manager Phil Savage seemed to be betting his job on retaining Crennel, along with the blockbuster draft day that produced left tackle Joe Thomas and Quinn. Some of us wondered if Crennel would survive the season. After Marty Schottenheimer was fired by San Diego, I wrote a column in Akron suggesting the Browns strongly consider hiring him to replace Crennel.
Today, Crennel has a contract extension. I still don't consider Crennel a great coach, but as Savage told me: "The guys like him, respect him and play hard for him. He really helped our two young guys [tight end Kellen Winslow and receiver Braylon Edwards] mature. He gives us tremendous stability, which this organization needed."
A year ago, the Browns had signed running back Jamal Lewis, who seemed to be nothing more than a Baltimore reject. Few teams had any interest in him. Now, it's 1,304 yards later, and Lewis gives the Browns the punishing back they've needed since the days of Kevin Mack and Earnest Byner.
A year ago, Savage insisted the Browns finally had the makings of an offensive line. He resisted the urging of some on his staff to use the No. 3 pick in the 2007 NFL draft on Quinn, picking Thomas instead. And he knew many fans would have preferred star running back Adrian Peterson over Thomas, but he was convinced the Browns needed a star left tackle to protect the quarterback.
Now, I'm going to write something I never thought could be typed a year ago: The Browns have a good, deep, dependable offensive line.
A year ago, all we knew about Rob Chudzinski was he grew up a Browns fan, did a short stint with the team as a tight ends coach, and had that same job in San Diego. Who knew if he really could put together an effective NFL offense? He also was the team's fourth offensive coordinator in four years.
Now he is considered head-coaching material.
A year ago, we didn't know if offensive tackle Ryan Tucker would make it back from his emotional problems that cost him seven games in 2006. Or that Edwards would become a Pro Bowl receiver. Or that the Browns would lose, 34-7, to Pittsburgh in the opener and still finish 10-6.
Yes, there are some things we don't know about this team.
Will the young, thin secondary hold up? Will the revamped defensive line with Corey Williams and Shaun Rodgers finally stop the run? Will receiver Joe Jurevicius make it back at some point this season, and will Donte' Stallworth become a viable No. 2 receiver? Will they make the playoffs despite a brutal schedule?
This much we do know as training camp opens Wednesday: It's been a long time since a Browns season brought so much genuine optimism to the fans.

Pittsburgh wins what?

I think the rivaly will be back on track once the Browns beat the Steelers in the
second game of the year, Sept. 14th.

I heard that on Last Comic Standing last week, and was rolling on the floor!!!

i believe that the browns are going to be an even bigger surprise this year than they were last year.  granted that derek anderson is healthy

track2514 -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/23/2008 2:55:43 PM)

I am not sure the Browns would be a surprise this year. Many people are picking the Browns to win the division and make the playoffs. I think the surprise would be if despite all of the improvements on paper, the Steelers continue their dominance of the Browns. The games should be much more interesting this year, but I am not sold on the Browns new defensive line yet.

Porktown -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/23/2008 5:57:47 PM)

I agree with Track on this.  Taking a few jabs at the Browns fans aside, they proved last year to be a force to be reckoned with.  So sneaking up and surprising teams is not going to happen.  Not that many teams were surprised at how good they were by the end of the season.  I would imagine they'll split with the Stiller's, and wouldn't be surprised with a sweep on either side.  I would be surprised if there are any 20+ point victories though.

Their last game was a classic.  It would be nice to get the old heated rivalry back again.  It seemed like the Stillers kept the rivalry with the old Browns (Ravens) more than the new Notreallythebrowns.  I'm sure another slug fest like their last meeting will put them both right back where the rivalry belongs.

I know for me as a fan, I hate the Ravens.  The Browns are rather likable.  Which makes a rivalry rather strange.  Put that overrated crybaby behind center, and I'll be ready to hate though!!!

D-nymph -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/30/2008 9:13:55 AM)

Steeler Punter Daniel Sepulveda blew out his ACL in his plant leg yesterday.  Out for the season.  Replaced with a former Cleveland Punter, oh boy.

So, they start off with Casey Hampton reporting at 365 lbs, and too fat to do much, being publically lambasted by being put on the PUP list (a move I like).
Polamalu pulling a hamstring in the first run test.
Faneca's replacement hurt his tricepts lifting a week before camp.
McFadden and Anthony Smith both pulling their groins
and the punter blowing up his knee.

Camp Tomlin V 2.0 is off to a roaring start!

beerman -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/30/2008 10:14:26 AM)

The Steelers better get a good punter to replace Sepulveda,
because they will be punting alot this season!  LOL!

beerman -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/31/2008 2:06:07 PM)

In all seriousness, maybe the Steelers would consider a punter that the Cleveland Browns have on their roster that they signed as a free agent this spring.  Dave Zastidul is the Browns incumbent starting punter, but he may be beaten out by rookie free agent Ben Woods. Woods grew up in Hermitage, PA and went to Hickory High School and Buffalo University finishing second for the Ray Guy Award last season.  I don't know Ben, even though he grew up on the same road as I live.  A few of my employees went to school with him.  If Cleveland cuts him maybe the Steelers will sign him.  He is a Steelers fan BTW.

I think that scenario is how the steelers will eventually find their punter for this year.  Some team, Cleveland or some other team, will have two on their roster battling it out.  Then a team will cut a punter and Pittsburgh will pick him up.

track2514 -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (7/31/2008 4:35:11 PM)

There have been way too many injuries already in the Steelers camp. Polamalu is hurt already, Hampton is now too fat to practice, and it goes on and on. Let's just hope the Steelers can stay healthy, because regardless of the talent they have, they are not very deep this year, especially on the offensive and defensive lines.

beerman -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (8/5/2008 11:50:01 PM)

2008 Preseason predictions sure to be wrong:

AFC North

1)  10-6 Cleveland Browns - At this point last year they had no direction.  They certainly do now.  The Browns have an excellent offense, but their defense is suspect.  They, like all of the division have a tough schedule.  They will beat the Steelers at least once.

2)  9-7 Pittsburgh Steeler-s As usual a solid defense.  The o-line is a question mark, thus so is the running attack.  A heathly Troy Palomolo is a very important part of the defense.  Big Ben will be solid if he has time to throw.

3)  5-11 Baltimore Ravens - Who will quarterback this team?  They are in transition on both sides of the ball.  The defense still has some outstanding individuals though.

4)  4-12 Cincinnati Bengals -Carson  Palmer is the best QB in the division IMO.  This is a very young/immature team.  They could have a worse record than predicted.

Super Bowl prediction:

Indy Colts 31
Green Bay Packers 21

Anybody else have an opinion?

gobyking -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (8/6/2008 1:44:38 AM)

Well, no way the Packers are going to even come close to the Super Bowl with Rodgers in charge, 70/30 they don't even make the playoffs with him. Did you see him in the Packers local game? He was terrible. My picks: Dallas vs either Indy or the Pats. Steelers make a wild card if they are lucky. That is coming from a die hard gambler who is also a Steelers fan but would rather win cash.With the Steelers schedule, bet against them early and often, then Vegas will adjust for the difficult schedule.

beerman -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (8/6/2008 8:49:33 AM)

I don't know why I forgot to pick the Cowboys.
In fact I'm more confident in picking Dallas to win the
NFC than the Colts to win the AFC.
It could have been the four beers I had last night. lol!

Indy Colts 31
Dallas Cowboys 21

STEELYS MANFISH -> RE: 2008 Cleveland Browns ~ Pittsburgh Steelers ~ Others (8/6/2008 10:39:23 AM)

oakland 45
atlanta 16

these are my picks for the superbowl.[&:]

Cleveland will not win the division, sorry about your prediction. The steelers will win both of their games against cleveland and cincy. They may lose 1 against the ravens though.

Not sure if having a high IQ for punting is all that relevant, but does help.
