I heard that after ice out walleye can be caught in numbers by the spillway and another time of the year they are caught regularly by wading where small streams come into the lake? DOes anyone know if this is true and what time of the year to fish for them? Baits, etc? any help would be appreciated.

They can be caught in the spillway shortly after ice out.  Some will be caught with jigs while the majority are caught by the mobs that jig blade baits vertically along the walls of the spillway.  Its a real mess, no fun.

i used to jig off the causeway bridge back in the mid 70s.  saw more snagging than catching.  for the next 30 some years, we donned waders and worked the various points and bars, throwing silver, #11 rapalas.  had some really phenomenal years, but the last few have been dismal, at best.

 I ain't a very good crappie fisher but for ice out crappie I like the tiny micro jigs, don't know how much they weigh but can't be very buch maybe 1/150 of a ounce. Some times it can be a sz. #12 bare hook.

When wading for the 'eyes do you fish by the incoming streams? about how deep is the water you fish?

jus, creeks are also good.  years ago, the fish would move up these.  we have caught walleye in as little as a foot of water.  one of our best nights came years ago as the walleye were attempting to spawn along a line of rocks.  we couldn't see them as it was dark but we casted to where we heard them rolling.  hit fish on every other cast for a good half hour.  years ago.

not many creeks at pymy but if u find one, like behind the welcome inn used to be a hot spot but I hit twice last year under perfect conditions and nothing!

There sure seems to be alot of them in the fall when there's no one else out on the lake, I wonder where they go in the spring??

Talked to the guys at Haines Marine today and they said it looks like it will be til the end of march before the ice is gone . He said the lake is still covered. If you go to the PA state parks web site they still show 6 inches of ice and it was updated on 3-13-08. Looks like old man winter does not  want to let go up there. That sucks

I called up there weds, and they said the causway was melted off. but there was parts of the lake that still had ice.  I figure after this week of warmer weather and rain it will be  all off. i hope

stealy, with a heavy rain, what you will really need is a strong west wind.  once that happens, all you have to do is listen for the peepers.  then it is on.

I'm looking forward to this spring... it has been hit or miss the past few years, I am partial to the rapala floating 11, but have also had equal or better success with the smithwick rattling rogue, a similar shaped minnow to the rap, but it rattles and seemed to do well for me.  I have seen quite a few muskies caught in recent years by anglers like myself wading and throwing raps, in all the usual walleye spots (welcome inn esp).  I don't know if they chase the eyes out of an area or not, I suspect they do at least somewhat because the muskies are spawning.  I like to fish shallow flats adjacent to feeder creeks, welcome inn is popular, but snodgrass boat launch is good also, as long as there isnt too much boat traffic (night).  I also have come to the conclusion that most anglers fishing early morning, and late evening or night are fishing too deep/far from shore and only cast out toward the deeper water, I wade out to an area away from ppl (but they seem to follow me) and cast 360 degrees around me and have caught several eyes between me and shore.

Was up working on the boat yesterday and either there was enough water on top of the ice that the wind was putting a little chop on it, or there was some open water right in the middle just south of the causeway.  Regardless, I got the bug and will be working on my boat this week and if the wife lets me will be going up next weekend to do a little fishing.   With the temps in the 50s all week I would think the bay have got to at least be open in another week.

I was there Wednesday and the causeway was not open.Only under the bridges.

Country,I too have better luck with Rogues at Pymy.and have also seen caught and hooked myself some huge musky at night.And Believe it is better to wade out and cast parrallel to shore than casting deep.Cast along shore you are in the zone more,where as casting away from shore you may only be in the strike zone the last 10 ft of you retrieve.That is why you hear people (casting from shore in Erie also)say he slammed it right at my feet.Its not that the eye followed you in,you are standing amongst the fish.Spring cast is 6"-4' of water with most action in the 2'-3'.So why cast far out and spend so much time in unproductive water.PLEASE CONSIDER RELEASING SOME EYES YOU CATCH.Contrary to what people say and the results that some have,there is  a enormous amount of eyes in Pymy.And having your lure in the zone 100% of the time instead of 5% will catch many walleye.Do you really need a limit everytime out?Release some,some nights I catch between 40-50 eyes in 4 to 5 hours of fishing and dont take home a single one.Everyone is so catch and release untill it comes to eyes.And then its like keep em all.1 or 2 is plenty for family meal.Six fish limit is insane.

And Rap is dead on.When you hear the spring peepers,The eyes are rolling on shore.

was anyone fishing vertical off of the causeway yet 2-3 years ago a few people banged them early around now or a week later. alot of snagged fish though too!

tree, we have had nights that we caught fish with their backs out of the water.  you are right about shallow and staying in the zone.  not sure if you remember the small island off of the poplar grove picnic area?  it is gone now, but when it was there, we had nights when we quite casting to the bar and turned and fired our lures at the island.  2 feet deep at most, and nailed fish.  in a snowstorm on two occassions.  as for keeping a limit, another good point.  my stringer has 6 clips, but only twice did i ever use them all.

porter, you have to watch on the bridges on the causeway.  you're right about those smacks snagging.  i don't think i could fish side-by-side with unethical fishermen.  grab your waders and hit the points and creeks.

There sure is a lot of open water south from the PA bridge on the causeway!

There is a lot of ice still too though.  Heading out on it in an hour or so.  My buddy brought home 22 slabs last nite.

Rap,I seem to find the worst the weather better the night eye fishing is.Sleet,rain and snow have been really good for me.

And rap is right,I stay away from the bridges,besides the snagging it can get pretty rowdy some night.And with Saint Patty's day today ther will be extra rowdy.LOL.

Let us know Storm.When I was there last week the was a pretty good hole opened around the bridges.But the rest of the causeway was locked in.I am going down again tomorrow evening myself.But if could give a heads up it would save me a trip,if still iced up.Thanks

I always hear that the Sonar's are the hot lure, but personally, I never do well on them. Instead, I have more luck on the Cicada's with green in them, sometimes the Vib-E's, too. Never the Sonar's, though.

ha ronnie..i use both a sonar and a vib-e...notice no difference in what is catching better..althought i do tend to stick at to a vib-e only becuase they are newer and have more. I think alot of people still say sonars becuase they were first. I dont like to use the cicada too much fowling up.
