Trout Magnets for real? - 2/26/2008 8:15:21 AM

Status: offline 		Any of you use the Trout Magnets? I have been seeing them everywhere and there seems to be a lot of evidence that it works but I always get this feeling that it is tooo good to be true!! I have a case of them with bobbers/streak indicators. I guess i'm just hoping the streak indicators work for bait as well so it won't be a total waste!!

Status: offline 		If you're using them in a lake with a high concentration of panfish, be prepared for a lot of incidental catches too. 

Used some last year, in both lakes & streams, and they work pretty well.  Don't know why, since they don't seem all that new or different from a lot of other jig type baits, but they do.

Status: offline 		Trout magnets do not work, nope not all. Don't even waste your time, especially if you are fishing near me.

Trout worms too. PLEASE don't bother with them.

Status: offline 		almost everyone i've seen using them have had decent luck on them.  i personally don't like using them but i know that people swear by em.  black grub tipped with maggots is what my buddies use.

Status: offline 		  I like the minnie ice jigs much better. The trout mag. are good for panfish but the hooks are too cheap for anything bigger. Not sayin you can't catch big fish on 'em but there are alot better made jigs in that sz. range than that.

    Status: offline     		I laughed at my buddy 3 years ago when he pulled them out.  I thought he was fishing for creek chubs until he started to catch 2 fish to my one fish fly fishing.  Trout seem to like them, im unsure if they would outfish live bait.  If so i'll take that challenge..

    Status: online     		I bought the big fat box of trout magnets that walmart has and i have yet to catch a fish or even have them take interest in them or even look at them, definately a waste of money, i can't even cast them unless i tie 1 onto the fly rod an roll cast it.

    It seems that most here have used them with a lot of success when other presentations have stopped producing.  You would not want to fish behind the Lelands on any trout stream when they break these out.  It seems as if they catch every fish out of every pool.  They seem to work very well on heavily pressured fish that have seen everything.  All of the people I have seen using them, use them on spinning tackle without a problem. 

    Perhaps it is time to stop blaming the arrows for not doing their job and blame the Indian for not learning to shoot well...  Your screen name says Hardcore Fisher.  To truly be that, you need to learn to adapt and overcome, rather than blaming failures on your equipment. 


    eye-c-man  I have most of the colors and have probably done best on the black or the gold mealworm colors.

    Status: offline     		I don't use them but my buddy swears by them. We both fly fish, and the trout magnet is his go-to "fly". There wasn't a day we fished that he didn't use the magnet. We both have caught a lot of trout last year and I would say that 80% of his catches were on those magnets. He even caught steelhead on them but I think he was putting the magnet on another hook, not using the jig. So, they do work well. The only reason I don't use them is because I enjoy catching trout on flies that I tie myself.

    Status: offline     		If I didn't see them at work with my own two eyes at Herford, I would never believe how many fish they catch.  Seems like you have to be real specific in your presentation, but when you get it down it was literally every cast was a fish, the few times my buddy had me use them.  Unbelieveable.

    Status: offline     		 Two years ago I purchased a "glow in the dark kit" of trout magnets at their booth at the Expomart February Sportsman's Show.  I checked them when I got home and only one of the four colors glowed in the dark.  I emailed then twice during the week hoping they would correct the problem.  I am still awaiting a reply from these hooftie deceivers. 

    Their other jigs are overpriced subpar performers.  Use regular jigs with Berkley Power Worms (or pieces of a Power Worm which gives you more baits) and tip them with a maggot.  These also work great for crappie below a float through early summer along lake weedbeds.  The maggot much increases the catch rate!
