Youghman -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (2/12/2008 12:50:11 PM)

Will there be any way fish can be entered into the contest without killing them?

Rick Bass -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (2/12/2008 1:07:09 PM)

Sure Youghman as long as you can make arrangements to keep them in an aeriated live well of some type I think that it would be ok.The weighin will be at the canoe rental and there is acess to the river to release the trout.

Wally Cat -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (2/12/2008 3:31:58 PM)

Will there be a minimum size for the fish to eliminate a lot of marginal fish that may be roped and released before they are brought in and killed?

Just a thought to possibly save a few fish.

Rick Bass -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (2/13/2008 6:50:05 AM)

I'm all for saving as many fish as possible Wally and thanks for the input. But I'm just the messenger,I'm just trying to raise a little interest in our stocking program and trying to get more people involved in the sport.Any questions can be directed to http://www.youghcanoe.com/ call and ask for Cuff.

Puffy -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/5/2008 9:37:02 AM)

Always had a question on W. Newton stocking.  Do they stock at all above the bridge ?

Rick Bass -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/7/2008 7:01:35 AM)

Puffy,  West Newton stocks from the Bud Town riffles (just above the mine) to the Swickley Creek. Why everone stands in a large group at the West Newton bridge, blocking boat access up stream is a mystery to me.There are many other places (better places to fish). The fish do move around a good bit.
                                          Good Luck this coming season

steelheaders#1 -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/8/2008 6:33:59 PM)

There are trout all threwout the Yough River. Sportsmens clubs from Whitsett above Smithton stocks. Smithon stocks, West Newton stocks and Sutersville stock the Yough. Up river they stock @ Connellsville also. When the river go up from rain trout move up and down stream. I have boated and caught trout from above Smithon to under route 70 bridge and @ Cedar creek to below Sutersville in Guffy area and even as far down as Coulter and once one near boat dock in Mckeesport. Where there is water the fish do travel the Yough.   My best fishing is between the taliraces and Ohiopyle. I will go to either place and get on a bicycle and go up or down river and fish the Yough where few people go.
The state stocks this with fingerlings and upper tailraces to bridge with legal fish. There are several fish from bridge to ohiopyle caught each year in the 4-8 lb range, but this is also trophy water!   If you plan on keeping fish in this area only 2 per person and they have to be over 14 inches unless they changed the regulations since 2007.

Nailbender -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/9/2008 8:53:28 AM)

Trout have been caught as far down as the point in Pittsburgh I would suspect they came from the Yough. Maybe from Braddock they do stock the stream that runs through Turtle creek. They do catch trout in McKeesport as low as the confluence there.

smallhook -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/9/2008 7:40:24 PM)

I've seen trout caught in the Mon at Coal Valley when it used to be open for fishing.

Rick Bass -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/18/2008 10:33:27 PM)

Puffy -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/19/2008 9:11:28 AM)

Rick, how far up are the "Bud Town" riffles from the W.Newton Bridge ?

Rick Bass -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/19/2008 12:37:23 PM)

Puffy they are aprox. 1.5 miles up stream from the bridge. If you are walking then the best side of the river is the side with the tracks.it will take you closer to the riffles.

Puffy -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/21/2008 11:41:31 AM)

Rick, so you can't access these riffles by driving a vehicle up the river on the town of W. Newton (proper) side ?  You have to walk upriver ?  If so, do they float stock that section ?

Rick Bass -> RE: Stock The Yough Trout Contest (3/21/2008 10:15:19 PM)

No Puffy in West Newton the trout are stocked from boats. Each boat takes a few barrels of trout , stocks them and then returns back to the stock truck to refill,This section of the river this time of year in very navigable. there are also a few guys that help stock, they have jet boats that can run in just a few inches of water.
