He was very mellow. Definately not confrontational. If backed into a corner, he could handle himself. He had a black belt in martial arts, and was very disciplined. He never bragged or boasted or even really talked about having such skills. Very modest. The news reports said it was 9mm. I would assume it was a handgun. 9mm rifles just aren't that popular. As far as distance, police are not releasing that info. As far as a disgruntled hunter, it possibly could have been. Was somebody trying to rob him? Was it a random drive-by for an initiation into a gang?It's really hard to try and figure it out when you don't know all the information. The police, like in any serious investigation, keep certain parts of the evidence confidential until they go to trial.
