steelheadfillet -> some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/6/2009 6:50:15 PM)

I wonder if the bear really exists or just a ploy to scare people away.
If it does exist, will his presence affect angler pressure?

steelheadfillet -> RE: some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/6/2009 7:05:18 PM)

black bears attack and kill 10 times the people that brown/grizzly bears do.

you dont have to worry about black bears in the winter....they hibernate.besides, theyre more afraid of us,than we are of them

On the gun nut site I frequent they were discussing  suitable side arms for  emergency bear defense .
One fellow that claimed to be bear knowledgeable (grizz and black)  said  that if a male  Black bear attacks you, you're likely toast anyway...cause you won't know it til it's too late.
cause  he STALKED  you and intends to KILL and EAT you (gasp)

The queastion is, did it shiite in the woods? Or is it waiting for the 5 star rated outhouses, Chartist will be developing to "save" Erie?

i think we can now officially refer to this as Beargate.

The bear is definitely real.  In fact, I hear one about the same size has been spotted at both 12 mile, and 20 mile creeks.  Maybe siblings?

pxatim -> RE: some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/6/2009 9:42:30 PM)

all this talk of bears is f***ing ****... hasn't anyone ever seen a bear in the woods before

I would think 44 magnum minimum. Nothing you want to be carrying while
fishing.

BIGSLICK -> RE: some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/6/2009 9:46:35 PM)

Actually, Bears here in Erie are pretty rare....I can say, I have never seen one in the woods in Erie...

spoonchucker -> RE: some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/6/2009 9:50:35 PM)

Danyl Boone kilt one with a Bowie knife. Of course that was when men chopped wood, instead of doing Pilates.

44mag "minimum", with heavy solid bullets for penetration ..not hollow points

and you better have nerves of steel while he's charging...cause even with a 44mag you need at least one shot to the brain box to stop him cold.
cause if he doesn't turn after a hit anywhere else,  he can still do serious damage to you with a broken shoulder or maul the crap out  of you long before he drowns  from a lung shot or bleeds out from mortal wounds

'least that's what I hear from the "bear duUds" anyway

Are you mistaking a black bear in Erie PA for a grizzly bear? [:(]

moooooo4me -> RE: some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/7/2009 12:29:59 AM)

ragadas -> RE: some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/7/2009 7:40:27 AM)

Due to the frequency of human-bear encounters, any hunters, fishermen, or persons that use the out-of-doors for a recreational or work related function are urged to take extra precautions while in the field.

Outdoorsmen are advised to wear little noisy bells on their clothing to as to give advance warning to any bears that might be close by so that you don't take them by surprise. A can of pepper spray should also be carried to ward off a possible bear attack.

Outdoorsmen should also be on the watch for recent bear activity and be able to tell the difference between black bear feces and grizzly bear feces.
Black bear feces is smaller and often contains remnants of berries and squirrel fur.
Grizzly bear **** contains little bells and smells like pepper.

If there was a bear spotted it would be all over the Erie news and I haven't heard a peep. So I highly doubt it's true.

If you spot a black bear throw it a fish and you have a friend for life! And where are the supposed blurry pictures someone took of it??? I am from Missouri show me!!!!

We went looking for the bear and the sign said "bear right" so we turned right. came to another sign that said "bear right" so we turned right again. then  we came to a sign "bear left", so we went home

If the bear shows up in Erie stream pull a john west on him! Check out salmon video of West http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dspAa9NQ-c

The bears around here are not uncommon. I believe it was only a couple years ago, that we had a bear living along the lake front here in West County.

I was at the RT 20 area on Monday and was told by two women that live there to be carefull as they had a LARGE bear in their yard that night and morning. As I went down to the creek a guy was leaving and he said he SAW the bear earlier.I hung around awhile and saw few fish and no bear but those women were not kidding me,I could tell they saw it.Both parties said it was large.

Rpgyard -> RE: some thoughts on the Elk creek bear. (11/7/2009 6:24:27 PM)

Will this have anyone reconsidering strapping their stringer to them while walking down stream?  This is honestly the most ridiculous thing I see while fishing.

I am considering using a clauser minnow with a stainless steel hook as self defense in case I do see a bear.  I am also going to launch a preemptive strike instead of waiting for it to attack.
