It' should be safe and all clear now, unless he had any buddies lurking around..

I saw a big bear yesterday at 5:15 within a mile from the rick road bridge on Elk heading toward Millcreek/Fairview line. I've seen enough bears to know what one approxiamatly weighs, this bear was 350-400 lbs.

black bears attack and kill 10 times the people that brown/grizzly bears do.

On the gun nut site I frequent they were discussing  suitable side arms for  emergency bear defense .
One fellow that claimed to be bear knowledgeable (grizz and black)  said  that if a male  Black bear attacks you, you're likely toast anyway...cause you won't know it til it's too late.
cause  he STALKED  you and intends to KILL and EAT you (gasp)

What were the calibers the recommend? You would figure that a .44 mag and .45 acp are minimum, would you really want to carry anything bigger? By that time your better off with a rifle. If i were fishing in Alaska i'd have my .460 s&w around my chest.

I wonder if the bear really exists or just a ploy to scare people away.
If it does exist, will his presence affect angler pressure?

It's real.....Trust me....

Suuure...

...tell us...did 3CU stock the bear too?

Roaring water, heavy rain, frigid temperatures, inflated gas prices, and slick roads don't seem to deter many. What makes you think a bear will?

45acp was  actually what got the thread started...ALL agreed it was too weak
while it has a 100 year long proven record against two legged predator  attacks , (and happens to be the caliber I shoot the most) it doesn't have the energy needed to smash thru thick heavy bone and penetrate vitals.
If you didn't hit him dead on the snout, it's possible the bullet could skim off the top of his skull rather than smashing thru it

all agreed a 12 gauge pump  w/magnum load slugs or  hi-powered magnum rifle was best

there's not a lot choices commercially available in hand cannon.
44mag minimum, 454 Casual, 460 and 500 rem

if griz, the bigger the better

my choice of firearm to kill a bear would have to be rifle in 35 class.
In my younger days a 30/30 would have been all I needed, one shot in the eye.
after, a africa trip last year and durviving a minor lion mauling my choice of firearm would be a 12 gauge with rifled slugs.
my white hunter shot this lion 7 times and the thing still was draging itself toward me.
he was firing a 44mag lever pointblank into this lions head.'tell you what, no gun helps if the animal gets the drop on you.

That's my favorite. Insert your own big game, A slug will dump it.

I would use my new FN Herstal 5.7 with a full clip of 57 FN Herstal cal. 5.7x28 mm rounds...

The result would be one dead bear..

Kinda wanted to call "bu77$hit" on this one. As far as attacking, maybe, since black bears do share more range with people than brown/grizz/kodiak, but killing?
I do not claim that this is even close to correct, but this information seems to indicate that- at least as far as fatalities is concerned- it's closer to 50-50 (which is still higher for blacks than I thought it would be)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America
It is also rather interesting (and slightly grusome) reading.
