i am a 100% fly guy now (hate me for it) i am really thinkn bout getting a pin set up not sure whats good or not.. dont know how much illl like so i dont wanna drop alot on a set up.. have a 11 foot fenwic, i take it this rod is to short.. i really just wanna try somthing new.

An 11 foot rod is sufficient for the erie tribs. Everyone is going to tell you to buy a sheffield or okuma, I'm not going to tell you that. If you do some searching online you can probably find a used islander at a reasonable price. There seems to be a lot of reels getting sold relatively cheap. I strongly believe that if you buy cheap you get cheap, but if you learn to love centerpin fishing you'll want to upgrade so why buy 2 reels look for 1 good used one.

As far as rods and reels there are so many good ones out there they are hard to chose which one to buy. The sheffield is solid reel for the money as is raven series of reels. An 11'6" rod is IMO a good length for erie tribs. St croixs wild river 11'6" gets my nod. Its my go to on most occassions be it erie or NY.

Your rod is fine....there are some good deals on reels out there too...check ebay, salmon crazy, the steelhead site and float fishing.net good luck. The Sheffield is a good starter reel as are the Ravens.

I keep telling myself that I need to give this a try. On one of the other threads alot of you pro pinners were saying to stay away from the Aventa and go with sheffield. Looking at FishUSA, they have the Sheffield S-1002 and then the way more expensive Sirata. Is the S-1002 a decent starter reel? or junk like the Aventa? I just got done reading the spec's and was wondering if the only difference btwn the Sirata SRT-1002 and the S-1002 is the drag? **** I feel stupid asking all this.

Don't feel stupid...the guy you really want to talk to is Craig at Erie Outfitters...He will not steer you wrong. Its all a matter of personal preference really. When I was looking to buy a reel, I went directly to his shop over in OH and felt all the reels in my hand then made my determination on what I wanted. The only difference between the Okuma Sheffield S1002 and the sirata is the drag,I have them both.The S1002 is a great reel.I bought the sirata for NY to help battle the kings,which it does wonderfully,and then set the S1002 up for stocky fishing,now it has turned into my buddy's fishing with it. More companies are putting drags on the reels,is it worth the money for steelhead fishing,I would say no.I very seldom use it.stick with your rod for now,St.Croixs and raven make a nice rod,the new Raven is on my x-mas list already.The 13'4" rods are tough to fish some places,walking through the woods is he--,it does get heavy,but I love it on big water.I,ve been us a 10'6" in Erie and on trout streams. You get what you pay for,and they will last a lifetime if taken care of.

I went with a Raven Matrix 12' 6" for my first setup just the other day...Seems like a nice rod, but haven't hooked one on the setup yet...
