You'll find varying opinions on spinning set-ups for sure. Have your wife use what is most comfortable for her. My daughter, who is 12 uses a 9' noodle rod with an Okuma Stratus, really feels comfortable with this combo. I like a longer rod which takes a lot of pressure off the line and puts more into the rod. The longer rod will also allow you to mend your line easier, especially on wider stretches of stream. I generally start her off with 8lb main line a Sheffield style float, micro swivel and 6lb. fluoro leader. slit shots below the float spaced accordigly due to the current(no shot closer than 12" from your offering). Egg sacks, single eggs, jigs tipped with maggots, single wax worms, 3 maggots on hook are all good offereings that are easy to deal with. Keep your bait close to the bottom. You can try suspending them when the fish are feeding more aggressively, but I generally start out fishing low. Good luck.
