i only fly fish but i want to take my wife steelheading. she does not know how to fly fish but does fish with spinning and spincast reels. can anyone give me advise on a good setup using spinning/spincast reels, lines, lures, etc. thanks

Rod......I have a 6' 6" lightweight uglystick that I really like. Any light to med/light action rod will work fine though. Alot of guys use little ultralights....I don't care for those, I don't feel like I have much control over the fish. 6-10 ft is best IMO. If she's new...stick to a 6 footer, easier to manuver.

Reel....something with a smooth drag, Doesent need to be expensive...just smooth.

Line..... 6-8 lb test...I use berkely.

Bait.....anything ya wanna put under a float...minnows, eggsacs, skien, mealworms, flies under a float, jigs....small spinners and spoons work too...it's unlimited really.

Bait/spin fishing for steel is best kept simple and inexpensive in my opinion. Good luck.

You'll find varying opinions on spinning set-ups for sure. Have your wife use what is most comfortable for her. My daughter, who is 12 uses a 9' noodle rod with an Okuma Stratus, really feels comfortable with this combo. I like a longer rod which takes a lot of pressure off the line and puts more into the rod. The longer rod will also allow you to mend your line easier, especially on wider stretches of stream. I generally start her off with 8lb main line a Sheffield style float, micro swivel and 6lb. fluoro leader. slit shots below the float spaced accordigly due to the current(no shot closer than 12" from your offering). Egg sacks, single eggs, jigs tipped with maggots, single wax worms, 3 maggots on hook are all good offereings that are easy to deal with. Keep your bait close to the bottom. You can try suspending them when the fish are feeding more aggressively, but I generally start out fishing low. Good luck.

For a first timer I would suggest a rod of at least 7'6 - it's easier to cast and easier to fish fish on. Okuma has a good selection.

Reel - Okuma or Pflueger reels with front drag and at least 6 bearings that can hold 120 yards of 6 lb.
