Poor Richard's sell the fresh steelhead skein. That'e the stuff you want, not the junk salmon skein previously mentioned.

Technically they can't sell it   but they do request a $2 donation towards the stocking program  I agree fresh is the way to go..

ya definitly the fresh stuff from Poor richards. i dont care what the conditions are, i think i nice big wad of skein is better than any fly. Its just getting it around. Make sure you have an old pair of scissors or a knife with u and a bunch of paper towels. Its a lot cleaner with scissors and paper towels or a rag will save u the trouble having to wash ur hands off in 50 degree water.

After you cut it, wet your fingers on both hands. Otherwise you'll get more "stick " on you than your hook. My 2cents !!

-----If you happen to be fishing Lake @ Trout Run or Godfrey make sure you use a float to keep it off the bottom or the gobies will eat it all on the bottom. A few gobies in lower stream but nothing like the lake. Big extra bag or even better some sort of small plastic bottle and cut it up in small chunks if water is clear and bigger if water if off color. The plastic bottle helps to keep from touching skein and getting it everywhere and precut saves having to keep getting it all over your hands.
---- After you catch some fish and if you keep any fish remember to get your eggs when you get fish cleaned. Then put eggs into paper towels to dry and take blood off and I put the atlas cure on them( sold @ poor richards in a shaker bottle)and direction are easy. Or you can put your skein into jello and freeze and it will last from year to year as long as the skein is completly covered in jello and nothing exposed for freezer burn over time.
----- The altas cure makes the skein get kinda rubbery but you will be amazed at how much the steelhead like it and that it also stays on hook longer if you are tossing it into lake. SOme people use straight 20 mule team borax and get same results. Borax dries eggs like the Altas cure but I really pay the $5-$6 for atlas cure as you will have shaker bottle for years as a little goes a long way.

Hey, whaen you use that atlas cure, can you put that right on the skein and fish with it the same day or is it mainly for preserving the skein.

The atlas cure takes from 12-24 hours to cure properly. If you do it early in day and use at evening it should work OK. Just make sure you do not cut the fish in the creek as Pa fish comm can fine you for that. best would be to take back to vehicle where you have ice and cut it for the eggs. Just make sure to pat dry and get rid of blood in skein before shaking cure on them. Dry on newspaper best way also.
