I was wondering what yinz's opinions are on Rattling.

I hunt private land, a mountain top if you will, with many fields, and some big woods surrounding them, but there are some small "islands" or patches of woods in between them.

I've posted up in one of the islands in between the 2 main fields, still too many leaves to see into the fields but it's getting close. I'm in a pickle here, being skunked last 2 times I've gone.

This area is known for BIG bucks. I've hunted the past 2 years there with some other fellows, and they've both taken 130+ Bucks there.

I've grunted, used Doe in heat. All that jazz. Nothing. October Lull? I have no clue.

My question is, is rattling effective in PA, and if so, what time of year?
I've always thought only guys on TV shows do it. But now I'm wondering if a bag or fake antlers would be worth it?

Comments, Idea's, personal experiences? Please share!

The only place I know rattling will work is in Ohio. I have tried rattling many times in Pa, but only rattled in a few smaller bucks. Neither one was legal.

nope rattling cant work in pa... dont even bother trying it, especially now til the end of the season haha
seriously tho it can be REALLY effective especially in areas with good buck/doe ratios and low hunting pressure

Rattled a 5 and small 8 point in last night. Killed my big buck last year after I rattled him in. So I will say rattling works!

I like rattling from now till the end of the season. Rut crazed bucks are nearly impossible to get a read on and will respond to things you least expect them to on any given day. I have never killed a buck that I rattled in, but have been caught off gaurd by them charging in for a fight while I was just goin through the motions of rattling and not really expecting it to produce anything. Action is very hit or miss in my experience but if you are gonna be rattling, be ready for some quick action/thinking/shooting if a buck does respond. If you aren't seeing much activity as it is, you don't have much to lose by doin some rattling. Good luck.

A young buck came to the horns this morning.
You have to catch them in the right frame of mind for it work.

I have to agree with Ironhed. I live in Ohio and have rattled in several bucks. I've also hunted Pa over the last ten years and done the same. It doesn't matter where you are hunting. If you hit the right buck, at the right time, he will respond.....

I always liked to do my rattling in the morning for some reason.
Like IH said, right place right time can be killer....
