Since we're getting into the winter season,I thought that I would throw this question out there.What if any baitcaster would you reccomend to someone just starting out?
I picked up one this year for the first time in 20 yrs. and was VERY pleasantly surprised with the tips that I got from the people here and the ease of use of my new "toy".
So to start it off for someone on a budget($29.95-$139.95) I would have to say that that Shimano Citica is awesome

Anyone else wanna chime in for those that restock over the winter like I usually do?

the abu revo s is another cheap but good reel, the daiwa advantage hsta is pretty good but its a couple bucks out of that price range. I really dont care what anyone says but with baitcasters the more you spend te more you get. I wouldnt touch anything sub 100$ if your going o fish it often. but the 100-200 range has a ton of great offerings like the curado, citica, advantage hsta, aggrest, sol if you shop the right stores, revo s, revo sx, revo stx. not to mention the cabelas version of those reels and bass pro shops brands arent too too bad.

and to someone starting out i would say if your going to use it a lot, dont cheap out, and save more if you need to. the higher end reels do cast better and run a lot smoother. and dont worry about gear ratios, look at how much line they pick up. thats how you tell a burner from a winch.

I'm kinda partial to the Daiwa PT33SH.
Low profile and high speed retreive...
They take a beatin...

pflueger has some baitcasters for under $100. Never had a problem with any pflueger reel I've ever owned. I've used their spinning reels for everything from bass to panfish to king salmon. Mostly use thier casting gear for bass.

What are you fishing for? Need to know what your after so we can make descent suggestions that will handle your species correcly. Otherwise were just shouting out names.........

Well, St. Croix has thier Mojo Bass line,, i bought the crankbait 7'MH ...Have a Pflueger Element reel on it,, never had any problems..Those mojo bass rods have a two year warranty, from a reputable company, and are priced reasonably

for under $100 y\the ambassadeurs are as good as any $100+ reel. i have 6 and pound on them.

For me it was an all around reel.I'm not looking any suggestions for me,just trying to start a discussion about what is out there for the person that might finally want to jump into baitcasting

For the record I am very fond of Shimano Products,but others may have some insight to help a fellow angler

as for what i fish i use 6 ambassaduers 3 shimanos and 2 basspro shop reels. the shimanos are nice but i do not think you get twice as much reel for twice the cost, that's why i have more ambassaduers. the bass pros are good reels for the money. these are mid level reels. if your looking for most bang for the buck, i like the 6500 reels. if you want a high end reel that is of great quality take the shimanos. however, i have not tried the abu revo reels to compare them shimano.

I love my Shimano Calistos that i have. They cost about $30 and i have not had any problems since i had them.

shimanos all around here. Calcuttas and cardiffs are both solid and they make the starting lineup very often from me throwing big fish baits.

I bought my first bait caster, Pinnacle Platinum Plus, earlier this year. If i recall it was $40. I am pretty happy with it. I also bought an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur for $60 i planned to use for flathead fishing. I haven't caught any over 15 pounds yet, but i definitely like the reel.

I run abu's mostly, I did buy one okuma and I am sure I got a bad one their customer service was excellent and they upgraded me after they could not get my reel fixed. That being said, I love my abu's I have a record 60 that I would suggest to anyone! It is so friggin smooth! I also have a abu SSC3 which is essentially a C3 with a thumbbar. Abu's are easy to service yourself and the parts are inexpensive overall. Alot of people complain about Abu's breaking down but I am betting that it is more akin to the law of averages, there are more out there so there are more to have issues. Then again I am bias.

Im pleased with both my quantam code and my pfluger pfrist or whatever its called..extremely smoothe.. i give the code great reps for the burner 7:0:1 gear ratio for cranking cranks and using worms and spinnerbaits to set that hook and reel them in fast. also use braid or that cheap german line they sell at gander for 5 bucks..great stuff!
