I am looking for some good water to fish near the Slippery Rock area... I heard slippery rock creek is good.... but i am not sure where a good starting location is.. if anyone could just give me some "getting started" info it would be appreciated. I will be fly fishing hopefully for trout or smallmouth.

Thanks

McConnell's Mills is a good starting point.  The fishing upstream and down stream from the park, is pretty similar in characteristics.  Just beware of private property.  Follow 422 to the park, and do some searching around for spots in and around the park.

I haven't fished closer to Slippery Rock, but have seen some really nice looking water off of Rt. 8 and Branchton Rd.  Both of those places seemed to have a lot of private property there (houses right on the stream).  I'd imagine if it isn't posted, and you are not walking through anyone's lawn and respecting their property, you'd be fine.  It seems like 90% of the streams around, are on some sort of private property.

Near Elwood City the Rock & Conney leave it to the Beaver.
Lots of posted property near where Tim suggested. The falls near the boy scout
camp off rt. 8 & Keister rd. is good but posted. Where Muddy creek enters the Rock
is purdy good also.

 Pork,

off Branchton Rd. used to be ok for some trout when McMury Rn. used to get stocked. It was taken off the stockin program with some other waters a while back. My grandmother had about 50 ac. down to the creek on
Saniga rd. off Coaltown in the 60's 70's & 80's.

Wolf Creek is purdy darn close & rock falls on 173 is just as far if you don't mind some bikini babes layin out??
Off Stoughton rd. is another spot close by.

Finished hs from the rock in 70. Used to go to rock falls all the time in my 55Ford. Those were the days.

Bikini babes while fishing, not a bad combo.  Although, paying attention to your strike indicator or not casting into a tree might be hard.  There are always a few boats with bikini babes cruising around the rivers in the summer.  Too bad they seem to always be with a bunch of meat heads driving the boats.  Very rarely do I see them baiting a hook, like the pictures I see on this site???  Don't tell me they are just doing that for the camera.  Maybe I should carry around a camera...  One thing that I have learned from the internet, some girls do some crazy things in front of a camera...

Way back when (1970's)  while I was a student at Slippery Rock, I fished Wolf Creek just North of town and caught trout and small mouth by wading the creek under the bridge and down steam.  I never fished the Rock at the falls area, but did make the trip out to the beer distributer, (the town was dry then) and stop to catch some sun and enjoy the view!  The college owns a tract of land along the Wolf Creek that has virgin timber which would give you access to the stream.  Ask someone at the school where the land is and how to get there.  The tract is located West of the town and north of rt 108.  To fish either of the creeks in your area, just go wading in old shoes and cast small rapala's, spinners or use live bait and look for structure and holes.  Good luck and enjoy.

Was talkin to a guy in town. He said it's been good where Wolf Creek empties into Slippery Rock Creek. Another good spot is in Portersville upstream from Eckerts bridge. They should be doing the fall stocking in a few weeks. They usually put some nice brown trout in at Eckerts bridge. Good luck...Also try Barron road downstream from the bridge. If you get off 79 and go towards the university on 108 it will be on the right not too far past the Dairy Queen.

  Hello,

stockin is Oct. 2nd. Lawrence county.

Was the pool open at rock falls in 70?/ They still have at least one good party a year at the grove[sm=all_coholic.gif][sm=bandit.gif][sm=auto_04.gif][sm=balloons.gif]

Off Branchton rd. the water still has some acid from mines. Some friends have property near the sm. dam when you cross the little bridge. We floated it awhile back just north of the sm. dam. It looked purdy scarry in some places deep drops/holes. Caught a few L/M & rock bass in the rocky spots, mostly slow water up from Rock hill rd up past the old camps back there. Another friend ownes land along the creek off Coal town , they say they catch some walleyes & a few big trout near the sm. bridge before Saniga. Great Wood duck huntin there to SGL 95 spillway.  Red Brush rd. looks like it might be worth a try. Silver Creek near North Washington holds some wild trout.

Yes that is where i fishered.. Barron road down stream.. I found a decent hole there.... Where is the Eckerts Bridge??

Mikastorm -> RE: Slippery Rock Creek (9/11/2007 11:41:52 AM)

The rock was polluted from mines when I went there. No fish.  At the falls, it was an amusement park. Used to slide down the shute and wear out my pants.

Eckert bridge....I can get you close, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the road you turn on...I'll get you to O'Donnell's tackle shop down the road and you can get the rest of the info there....just go to 79 south from Slippery Rock, take the Portersville exit, go to 19 north about 4 miles to O'Donnells tackle shop on the right...good luck fishin

McConnels Mill is a great place to fish Slippery Rock Creek. One of the bridges I'd say is promising for fish (mainly bass, warm months kill of the trout) is Harris bridge, a good 1 mile (almost exact) upstream from Armstrong bridge, the fly fishing only section. Not to much of a trout fishing area, but the amount of bass is nice, and they're are plenty of suckers. They do stock it but not heavy at all, frankly not enough. What you want to do is get there, follow it down stream. Upstream is a ton of riffles & fast water, pretty unfishable (though my dad got a nice 15 inch rainbow up there.. doing some River Runs Through it Stuff. haha) It gets slow then there is a fall, like 5 feet, and a good place to fish. When your going you'll find a boating place, don't worry its not private. I'd say fish along that section & you'll do good.
