Seems the Obama administration's promise of change has extended beyond the economy and health care all the way to the Erie tribs

Made my first trip to Erie for the year on Sunday and Monday. Boy was I shocked to see what happened to the stream at Walnut under Rt. 20 and upstream a little ways. Do any of you local guys know what the deal is with the new look under the bridge there? I'm assuming that there was some major erosion there from the big storm this summer and that the concrete reinforced rip rap was probably put in place to prevent further damage to the tunnel.

It is a totally different stream in that area. Not necessarily better or worse overall, but very different.

Are you saying that there is a part of Walnut above route 5? I didn't know that!

You got me danes, I made the whole thing up

Seriously though, 188 views and no responses. Guess nobody else knew Walnut flows south of Rt. 5 either

Anyway, for any of yinz that haven't been there since last year, it's gonna be a lot different fishing that area. I was just wondering out loud if anybody knew the story behind the man-made changes, that's all.

The natural changes from what I'm ASSuming were the big storm this summer were impressive to say the least. Hard to imagine all of that shale and gravel being uprooted and deposited along the stream where it was.

Yes we had a really bad storm I think we got something like 6 inch of rain in one day. I have video on my phone of 14 feet high rapids on lower walnut.

I ran into a guy on Elk two weeks ago who told me about the changes to the underside of the bridge across Walnut at 20, so I just had to drive up to look at it. There no longer is a good hole running along the wall there. The stream must have been affecting or threatening the bridge in some way. I found no fish while I was there but I didn't look too hard, I simply checked the water under the bridge.

I checked it out before and after the "One Fly" and the fish just aren't holding there anymore.  They just keep moving up stream.  And there ain't a whole bunch of anything above that spot anymore either.  The holes were filled in and the bottom sort of scoured.  It's like fishing over a pool table.  But then I only went up about 1/4 > 1/2 mile.   The highway Dept did some serious earth moving and cutting of the bottom under the bridge, and above.  Sort of sad in a way.

The past 2 years have been pretty disappointing for me in that area. 3 & 4 years ago I did pretty well there.

But you guys are right, I doubt very few fish will hold there now.

However, as I went upstream, I saw that the summer flood seemed to make some new holding areas that I personally hadn't seen or noticed there before. I actually pulled two smolts out of one run I fished above there this past Sunday.

Kinda hard to tell for sure if the fish will hold in those new areas until they have some good, sustained high flow to make it up the chutes and over the falls below Rt. 5.

Middle and Upper walnut is some of the most beutiful water to fish, (Rt 20 and up) the fish just are not there anymore. Between the log holes put in down at the mouth and the closing of hatchery on sterretania, I believe it ruined the fishing on the upper parts of the creek. Its kinda sad as I live 100 yrds from upper walnut. Dont get me wrong, there are fish there every year, just not what it used to be like. Anyways, have not seen the rt 20 hole but that hole used to hold a lot of fish, dissapointing to here that.

I use to fish up by Mill Creek shopping plaza 10 years ago and have not ventured above route 20 since then on Walnut. Some people are afraid to walk away from their vehicle.
