Hello, i'm fairly new to tying, and have come across a lot of attractive streamer patterns..i bought some sculpin wool to make some, but cant get the wool tightened down underneath the head, and it looks terrible...not sure if there is a trick too it, or perhaps i'm just using too much sculpin? any help would be appreciated

have you ever worked with deer hair? same tech

are you looking to fill in behind the conehead? or having issue with the wool in general?

couldnt find anything online on how to tie them...whenever i try tying them the wool wont stay down

No, it isn't wool.  It's probably either craft fur or arctic fox fur.

don't think that is scuplin wool/ rams wool...

wool is for streamer heads and used like deer hair... but instead it sinks

careful... it can destroy rods

oh and i forgot to mention they don't work real well on steelies or big brown trout , mostly for perch and crappie

yes dano, like that one.. i'm not using head cement on the cone heads,
i wanted to know if anyone had a suggestion to what head cement to buy next.. for things like these..

i use rumpf head cement. it's about the only thing i can find around this way and works just a good as anything else i tried. also not too expensive.
orvis cement seems to thicken and gets gooey quick and the thinner is expensive.

umpqua, if i remember, is good also but is more expensive than rumpf's

just a note, if you're tying in beads i suggest clear nail polish. some of the head cements will dull or tarnish the beads.

doubletaper, this was the "Triple Threat" you and troutslammer were showing me?

I remember him going over how the polar fiber was layered in. I picked up some of the polar fiber, but can't remember the details.

Can anyone give some notes on this?

It almost looks like the white was tied on the underside of the hook (then split to fit around the rest of the hook) and the other two colors were tied on top.

ya, that's it but different colors. using dano's fly for a model; lay the darker green along the shaft over top the eye and tie in. lay the brighter green over top of the dark green and tie in. for the white tie that in at the bottom. then just fold them back, stuff the fiber inside the cone and tie in inside the cone with a needle.
i'm going to try to tie some tonight.

The "Tie inside the cone with a needle" part looks fun, doesn't it? [&:]

By the way, I managed to get those zonker strip flies going (the one you gave me as an example). I tied some with pearl chenille too just for the heck of it. There are a couple of twists on that pattern I found on the Internet. I'll be sure to bring 'em next time to share. :-)
