I think I remember reading a possible world record brown trout was caught a few years back in the White River on marshmellows and corn but was disallowed because the fellow used a 14 treble hook. Not a real native trout but the fish was obviously in the river for quite a while. I hope my memory of the account is correct.

Why would a fish eat a purple gob of powerbait?

Cause it looks like a mulberry or poke berry.

A funny observation about bluegill- I love fishing dries in still water for bluegill. I use a parachute caddis for them. The neat thing that I've seen them do is this- Half a dozen of them will gather underneath the fly immediately after it lands, just watching and inspecting. If they don't like what you put down, I guarantee they will not take it. A tiny twitch will keep their interest, but no take. One may attack it though after another moves in for closer inspection. They are competitive and won't let another fish feed on a potential meal.

Thats still water. In moving water they'd take a fly constructed of legos.

One day, I put the rod down on the bank and picked up a stick.  I then tied about a 10' piece of 1X tippet to the end,  snelled a seagull feather to a bare hook and proceeded to hook and land a steelhead.
I wasn't so lucky on the 2nd hookup...the stick broke.

Then he stuck another feather ( which he called macaroni ) in his cap, sat on the bank, and stroked his yankee doodle.

Yes, anecdotal evidence is much better than sourced evidence originating in scientific reports. Score one for the goons!
