it was packed at the mouth of montour run tonight, went down to dashields and got skunked...real windy. I havent been catfishing too long just started over the summer. Do catfish bit throughout the winter months at the mouth of montour run? or how long will they be bitting good for.

It definitely has some extra warmth (which will attract bait), but not nearly as it did 5+ years ago.  If you happen to hook into some shad now, toss them into the freezer and cut up as bait later (doesn't hurt to throw a cast net too if they are there) yes I mean the big ones...  If you are not used to using cut bait, check out some ocean fishing techniques, they work great for cats (change the type of lead, that is about it).  You don't need to cast far, they come into the shallow water too feed.  This definitely isn't "the" place to be in the winter, but if you live close, is worth fishing.  If you have a closer water that has warm water entering (including sewage overflows), the fish will be there.

ok thanks. I found out that cut bait works the best there. I did go up stream at montour run and caught only 1 small 12" brown trout on a panther martin spinner. are there many deep holes to fish or is it all pretty shallow?

Yes it does. Cast nets are illegal in Pennsylvania.

If they are under 4' diameter, they are allowable.  At least that is an email response that the PFBC in Harrisburg sent me.  You might want to get your own response, or search my old threads from about a year or two ago when I posted the exact email.  It is definitely a gray area in their rule book though.  Any WCO that I have seen on the rivers does not seem to care too much about baitfish netting, as opposed to keeping short gamefish.  Everyone of them has told me that I am fine with the net I have (cut down 4' diameter).  One even told me as long as I am only taking gizzard shad, he didn't care what size net that I was using.
