Has anyone used pink berkley power worms or other pink worm imitations (san juan worm fly) for steelies or trout?  I was reading an fishing article online that was talking about how they work really well.

They used to be really good but in the last 5-6 years the bite just hasn't been there with the worms (San Juan).  Don't know why.  I spent an afternoon fishing them about three years ago and tried three sizes and about 5 colors and only got two good hook-ups.  Might be time to try them again.  BUT I would only try them if experimentation was my goal.

I fish pink worms a lot on the Salmon River for steelhead and have good luck most of the time. I have found that if fishing one for 15 min. or so and not getting any hits, I change color to something else and work that for 10 to 15 mins. then I go back to pink.I do the same thing with troutbeads. Steelhead can be real picky at times and you need to change colors and baits to get them to hit.

I do a lot of switching if I am standing on the same drift for a long period of time... the fish are there, now get them to bite. It pays to keep throwing change ups.I also believe in resting a hole. Stop fishing for 10 min...take a break, look around enjoy the sights then commence. You will get bit on the first or second drift. I would rather seek out different water and see different cover and drift situations than to stand over a hole but sometime "when in Rome" you need to stay on fish and don't leave fish to find fish...in this cast switching and resting become great alternatives to going biteless in a loaded hole.Pink worms can sometimes be the curve ball you need, it all works......sometimes.

I personally never had much luck with them, but thats primarily because I don't have much confidence in them either and find it hard to get away from my go-to's (jigs, sacks & singles).  However, my brother likes using the pink, chartruese and white power worms and does well, so I know they catch fish.  He hooks 'em whacky style and gives 'em a pop every once in a while.  I'm going to have to do more exerimenting with them this year I think.

I've seen one or two guys having good luck with them, even in low clear water.  I tried them one cold winter day a few years ago, out ofr desperation, and got two fairly large bucks back to back in pretty clear, very cold water.

I think the novelty or smell might be what turn them on. If you do
a search on the web you'll find they are used a lot elsewhere.  I saw an article somewhere with rigging tips, etc. for steelhead.

Try em. Fishusa has them.

i know they mash on stocked trout in a big way.  never tried them for steelhead

I drift red and brown san juan worms with a lot of success in good drifts.  If you have packs of fish in moving water, drifting almost anything that looks like a worm, chunk of eggs, a single egg, or nymph will get hit.  The clearer the water the more natural the color.  Although brown san juan worms will work in stained water.

the pink worms work great on trout........and I have even caught a few smallmouths on them.....never tried the berkely pink worm for steel.......but I have used all colors of SJW with good success while fishing for steelhead.......

The winter months seem to be a great time to use the Pink worm.......especially if there are rainbows around.....I have caught a few browns with the pink worms.......but mostly, it is a rainbow trout on the end of the line

I haven't have much luck with the pink worms, but on certian days I can kill them on white ones. There really doesn't seem to be much of a pattern, just certian days they work and the next they won't. It's all up to the fish. Like most have said before, if you're up for an experiment, then try it and switch often.

I have a friend who is a power worm freak... they "mash" em dudes.  Pumpkin seed and natural colors are the go to under the pin.  It's pretty much cheating though, start nymphing ;).

Pink San Juans worked well for me 2 easter days ago.

from my experience, they either work, or they don't

in other words..they've been killer or complete duds for me

While I've done well with them on trout , nary a hit with the steelhaead . It shouldn't make a difference , but as many have said in so many words , they either work or they don't .
