I’ve caught some nice fish both fresh & salt water. But the most memorable fish that I’ve caught was not the biggest by far, it was a mere 13” but as beautiful as can be. The stream I was fishing can be easily stepped over in most places. I was fishing my favorite native Brookie stream in Somerset County and hooked on to a beauty that was under a tree stump. That Brookie had the most beautiful colors and is the only one that I have ever caught with a significantly hooked snout. Unfortunately, no camera with me and have not caught it since - when I did have a cam.

Your most memorable fish?

I dont really have one specific fish that is more memorable than the others, but several come to mind:

A big 22" 6.5 lb largemouth I caught last summer out of my buddy's canoe.

First trout on a fly

First trout on a fly I tied

First steely

First trout on a dry

A nice tiger trout caught this year on a 3wt

I dont really think that any one fish has a spot as my favorite. Rather, I've definitely had favorite situations or days.

Early this summer, while bass fishing and catching nothing, my friend and I noticed a bunch of little fish darting around just under the surface near the bank in the shallowest section of the river. Eventually I thought maybe they're being chased, so the next time they did, I tossed my drop shot w/ soft minnow out ahead of where they were headed, let it sit, and twitched it a few times when they got close. Boom, 19"+ laregemouth.

Just a few days ago, I was on the creek fishing with nymphs and buggers and I watched the fishes' behavior, correctly identified a caddis hatch, switched to a big elk hair caddis, got a refusal, and then switched again to a smaller emergent sparkle caddis. After 2 hours of fishing without success, I got two within 15 minutes. I guess I just love it when I figure out the puzzle.

Well,
Since it wasn't too long ago my 1st muskie would have to be my most memorable.

Since it was my 1st musky it would have to be my favorite.

I have tried for about 8 years to catch a musky, finally, this year I managed enough money to buy a bass boat and have done some heavy fishing. While on a trip to KPD one evening after work, I managed to tie into a muskie right next to the boat, not a monster but a 30" for a 1st muskie is fine by me. Caught 2 muskie so far this year, 2nd was also at KPD, but is was only about 17"

Excellent Input! I'm going to have to dig through my box of pictures and see if I can find the ones that match some other very memorable fish!

Two that come to mind are the large mouth bass that nearly pulled my youngest son into a farm pond and the first walleye caught by a friend’s young son that I took fishing on Yough Dam.

Well I did not catch the fish but I'll never forget it. WHen I was about 10 years old I was fishing with my parents and brother at Crooked Creek Lake and my Mom caught a 8 pound large mouth it was a monster ! Hit a small Rapala. We all took turns reeling it in.

My most memorable fish was one I didn't catch. It was a summer afternoon over at Northmoreland Park three years ago. My son caught his first fish with the flyrod. It was a 10" largemouth caught on a little green cork popper. The smiles he had and his reactions while fighting, landing and releasing the fish were priceless! Since then he has caught several species and is ready to go anytime. He is still young and of course still needs help but it's always a blast to leave my rod at home and just take his!

I remember a 22" largemouth I caught.  I was 12, we were visiting my grandparents down in Florida.  I spent my days catching lizards and fishing in the canals around their yard.  I was fishing with pap's light action rods, mostly throwing jigs and whatever I could steal out of the kitchen.  I was content catching bluegills.  Then I threw out into the canal, and just saw this huge Kraken rise from the bottom to engulf my Beetle Spin(white body with red spot on back).  I hooked him, and I knew I had a big one on, so I just followed him up and down the canal, not letting him take out any drag until he wore out.  I was screaming my nuts off for help, but no one in the house could hear me.  In desperation, I jumped into the canal to lipland the 22" largemouth.  I ran into the house like Maz rounding third, and I still remember that my dad opened the bathroom door to show my brother the fish while lil bro was in the shower.  Another fish was a white bass.  It was the summer of 1987, I was 9, and spending a good portion of my time fishing on the Mon river near my house.  In those days I was a crankbait man, and my favorite was a Kmart house brand generic shallow running firetiger crank.  I threw out, hooked the aforementioned white bass, fought him in, went to land him, only to have my line snap and my favorite lure swim away with the fish.  Luckily, I had an identical copy of the crankbait and tied it on.  A few casts later, get a bite, reel the fish in, and it's the same white bass, with my crank still hanging from its jaw.  Another one I'll never forget is one a caught about two months ago.  I was fishing out on the Yough, drifting crawlers.  I feel the bump and set the hook.  The fish made one nice run, then let me reel him in with no problem.  I figured it to be a drum.  So I'm reeling him in, he gets to about 30 feet away, and he must have seen my legs or heard me grinding gravel or something, because he immediately took about 100 yards of line off, straight downstream(I was fishing 8# line, 7' ML rod).  At this point I'm seeing myself on the front page of the paper, something like "Incredibly handsome local man catches state record brown trout" or the like.  Anyways, soon afterwards I realize I snagged the guy, but I refuse to give in, I work the fish closer.  Eventually it turns out to be about a 7# channel cat.  It took me about an hour to get him in, given the current and weight of the fish.    Those are ones that I've caught that stand out in my mind.  Unfortunately, the ones I didn't catch are the ones that really stand out in my memory.

i would have to say my first hybrid/striper in lake arthur.i had no camera or measuring tape but all i can say was that it was huge.i would guesstimate 12lbs maybe 26 inches long and very thick.i thought a steelhead fight was good but hybrids do not dissapoint.

Wuz crankin' a 4 inch blueback/silver side Rapala in Highland Park pond on a windy, rainy cold day, and suddenly something exploded on it and broke water for about 6 feet before diving into the weeds.

After a 5 or 6 minute wrestling match to get it out of the weeds I finally discovered that not only was it a carp, but it had inhaled the entire lure so that NONE of it was sticking out of it's mouth!

Getting that Rap loose was a trip.

WOW! there are so many fish and trips that stand out in my mind. The most recent fish that i caught was a nice thrill. Every year around my dads birthday, we go on a father son fishing trip. This year, right before Labor day,we went down to W.Newton to fish the Yough. I was using a Rapala Fat Rap and letting the current take it downstream and reeling in real slow. got a hit and reeled in a nice 18" 2# smallie. I'm glad Dad was there to witness it as I didn't have a camera on hand. Nice little birthday trip for dad I think.

OK, I think many of you will agree that this fishing story will rate right up there as the Most Memorable of all time for this 5 year old!

Video will run right after the short commercial (couldn't find any way around it).

24.5" 6lb spawned out largemouth caught at keystone power dam last year. Fish would have went seven if it was pre spawn. It was afternoon, fishing was beat, i was trolling the shoreline looking for something to bite. Saw something up ahead so i flipped a little finness tube up past it. After the best fight a bass has given me yet i had her in the boat. took a pic and off she went...

Tons of memorial moments, but the best was at Pymatuning 20+ years ago.
A bud that I worked with and I decided to do some nightime walleye fishing in April.
We set up by the dam with our bails open and a can that had some marbles in it so as to hear when we had a bite.
About 1 am my can falls over and line is peeling off my spool.
I wait till it stops and takes off again, then set the hook.
The fight was on! After a few minutes I knew it wasn,t a walleye but a much bigger fish.
20 minutes later I had it to the bank but had no net near big enough for this thing.
I tell my bud not to even try to land this , afraid he would hit it in the tail and it would be gone.
Holding the rod high, I reach my hand down under his gill cover and procceed to lift with both hands.
It was shaking , and with his weight, cut my hand clean across my palm with his gill plate.
I placed it on my tail gate, a 78 Ford F150,  and it hung 4" over each side of it.
She had a huge belly balging with eggs.
By far the largest musky I ever saw!
Could not believe I landed that with 6lb. test and 3" chub.
No camera, no place to take it to at that time of night, and no money to get it mounted.
I decided to let it go. My buddy thought I was nuts.
I said, just look at all those baby,s I saved.lol And the baby ducks I didn,t.

The most memorable fish I ever caught, wasn't one that I personally caught. I helped my dad net a carp when I was 13. This thing was huge, measured 44 inches and when we attempted to hang it to weigh it, the scale snapped.

He attempted to put it on a string for a short period of time, so he could get a camera and keep the fish alive The fish went nuts (Back then i had no clue that stringing a fish could kill it fairly easily) and it ripped it's gill to near it's mouth. He came back with the camera, we took the picture. It stretched long enough that me, my dad, and a buddy all stood there holding it.

My dad later snagged the fish off the bottom, it had went back to the same spot where it was caught and was pretty much gone. Wish that thing could have made it back into French Creek alive.

I caught a 38 inch carp up Pyma later that Summer, but that was nothing compared to that Hog he caught.

I too have a Dad, Carp & me story! My dad passed away in 1990 so this one brings back a very special memory. Mom and dad came to visit when I was stationed in New York back in 1982. I took him fishing at Saratoga Lake, near Saratoga Springs where I lived. There was a little old white haired lady named Millie that rented flat bottom wood boats with a pair of oars. We paddled to my favorite bluegill spot and started getting gills…. Suddenly all hell broke loose and a huge carp was netted and in the boat. It freaked out and dam near capsized us. I don’t remember how long it was but here is an old fuzzy picture that has followed me through my Navy career.

20 lb 45" musky from Arthur on a 5' trout rod and six lb test.
35 lb 38" carp from Arthur on a bass rod, 8 lb test, and a shiner.
3 30-35 lb flatheads on the Ohio River in 2003 on crank baits below a dam.
30" 10.5 lb walleye in 2003 from Ohio River.
First 8 lb largemouth in WV, 45 minutes after landing a 5.5 lb bass.
First Steelhead, 2000, 32" 12 lbs.

Seems the biggest surprises are the most memorable.

I've caught trophy fish for 22 species of fish in PA, but the most memorable was a flathead hooked on a giant swim bait in 2003 that I hooked while trying for hybrids.  I fought and lost it after 45 minutes.  Head to tail when it surfaced it looked lik 50".  I had landed three other big ones that summer on cranks up to 42" and this one dwarfed them.  At the time the state record was still 42 lbs.  This fish was at least that.  I thought I finally had it and it took one more dive and snapped off.  Sat there for a half hour before I headed home.  Didn't fish for 2 weeks.

Just proves as someone else said that THE most memorable are the ones you didn't land.

This year at Arthur watching an Osprey finally get a fish on its third dive bombing attempt about 100 ft from the boat. Nature in action and simply one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed. We quit fishing and watched this bird for about 15 minutes circling around just past the dam.

Here's my Dad's first musky (43.5").  We just did a trip to Ontario from Sept 21st to Oct 1st.  The fish went airborne on him which was cool too!  I think he has a better understanding of why I fish for them now.

This fatboy was a bull trout I caught while fishing in Washington about 6 years ago.  He was special because he had a little rock "tent" that he made his home, probably the strangest living quarters I have seen a trout in.  It was a fast back eddy with a real steep drop off and 2 rocks placed themselves perfectly in a tent like shape...everytime I would drift the fly would bounce off one of the rocks and look very unnatural. He knew how to make himself unavailable and had every escape route in the book.

So I knew the only thing I could do was pi$$ him off enough to leave his post to whack a fly.... so after throwing everything I had at this guy, he didn't even move....I looked down and I had the stupidest, ugliest, crappiest tied streamer in my box, seriously just flashabou and ice dubbing on a hook with brown thread, I think it ended up there by accident instead of in the scrap cup...

Well I figured what the heck...
He left the comfort of his tent and moved about 6 feet to take the fly, really agressive take....got one good pic and back he went, right back to his little rock tent with sore gums....I miss that Loomis IMX in that picture, but it brings back some good memories..what a fantastic fish.

54" Musky at the Yough Dam 10 years ago. Young kid with me could not believe I left it go. I explaned the importance of C&R (so he could catch it when he gets older). He's 20 now and in the Airforce and is very proud of the fact that since that day with me he has never kept a healthy fish.He has turned into quite a fisherman and has fished some nice places over the last couple of years. He still talks about that musky says it was his best day fishing ever. At the time it was just another trip for me......I didn't even want to take him.

No pics of the 54" muskey. I was just takin the kid for a boat ride, maybe a bluegill or two. Backed down ramp, main battery was dead in boat I just left trailer dunked at ramp and was using the trolling moter under the lights. looking for some gills. Got the kid set up and I tossed out a new spoon just to check the action BAM that quick  musky on. Did not put up much of a fight as I recall but was a beautiful fish. I still have that spoon hanging up in my garage and have only used it that one time.
