Musky in canonsbrg dam? - 9/28/2009 5:40:21 PM

Status: offline 		Was playing around with the idea of fishing for musky this week locally and I've heard rumors of tiger musky living below the c burg dam. If anyone has seen or caught one from below the dam yojr tips would be greatlyy appreicated.

there hasn't been a time fishing there in that last 5yrs , when i left the lot swearing to never fish it again

Status: online 		I highly doubt it.  I'm 99% sure there is not.  Canonsburg Lake is a real poophole.  It's good for catfish.  I would not waste time there.

I fished there in the Spring for the first time in 10+ years.  I left feeling the same way, and realize why it was 10+ years since my last trip.

Status: offline 		well whats a suitable place to musky fish in the allgheny/washington county area? I'm not looking for any certain holes, just a general direction of were to fish. I caugh my first musky over the weekend and I'm already going after another

Status: online 		Do you have a boat?  Racoon Lake has some Tiger Musky in it.  The Yough and Mon Rivers are a good options too.

Status: offline 		Canonsburg does have tiger musky in there and decent numbers below the spillway.  Go down there after or during a rain and you will see them running the wall...Yes its an awful place to fish but it definitely has tigers.  I have seen multiple musky down there and have had one on only to lose it 5ft in front of me.

Status: offline 		If you are stuck to shore and C-burg is close, then I'd focus there.  I really only think it is disgusting for a trout fishing destination.  I have fished the rivers for over 20 years, so it's definitely not the worst place that I have fished.  Also, for as long as it takes me to get to C-burg, I can be on much nicer water in about the same time.  I'll be moving south in a few months, so likely end up there a lot more, wishing that I would have moved north...

I've only had two musky encounters, one landed very small cigar maybe 15", and another lost at my feet, around 40", never really focusing on musky though.  Until I lost that one at my feet, and focused for about a month on trying to land one.  That was at the old faithful Highland Park Dam!!!  You should check that place out.  I think there might be a thread or two about that place...

If you have a boat, then I'd do some research on here.  There are a lot of musky fanatics that you could likely learn a good bit from.  They mostly seem to be lake or big river fishermen (from a boat) though.  I'd imagine their techniques would still be useful in any situation.

Status: offline 		was down there today with no action, went down to gander mt. and talked to skipp the musky man and he told me to keep fishing it esspecially after the rains. He directed me into buying a smaller swimbait to throw and run along the wall. I'll keep ya guys updated

Status: offline 		I don't mean to be rude, but I can't fathom that there is a single musky in that lake.  I live extremely close to Canonsburg Lake and I have never heard of a Musky being taken out of there in the last 10 years.  Tiger Musky are sterile and have to be stocked and I don't remember ever seeing Canonsburg Lake on PFBC's stocking list.  I could be wrong and if I am, I am taking my musky gear down there tomorrow to see what is there.

Canonsburg Lake in Washington County was surveyed by Commission staff in late May and contained an excellent population of largemouth bass. Quality-size bass were present in high numbers with 27% of the bass over 15 inches. Most of the bass were collected in the lower end of the lake between the bridge and the dam breast. This impoundment would be a great place to target largemouth bass.
Channel catfish were collected in good numbers and sizes. The Fish and Boat Commission stocks channel catfish, muskellunge, and tiger muskellunge fingerlings along with trout. Muskies and tiger muskies were not collected during the survey. They may have been in deeper water due to the warm water temperatures or their populations may be low. Crappies were collected in good numbers but quality size fish were lacking. Overall, panfish populations were well below average. This is probably a result of competition with gizzard shad. The majority of trout were collected in the shallower upper-end of the lake.

Status: offline 		recently on a fishing trip in a creek near c-burg lake i was catching smallmouth bass.i could not believe the size.all you have to do is explore well known fishing areas and you could find a 'diamond in the rough' like i did.

Status: offline 		If down south wash / greene county try ten mile creek from clarksville to mouth at the Mon. Washington CO. ten mile creek park has a boat launch I have caught two muskies small ones maybe 2 ft long by accident in May fishing spinners for Sm bass and white bass in that creek. better try it soon because of all the gas drilling in the ten mile creek watershed...probally your next dunkard creek

Status: offline 		They are there.  I have not tried for them there for a couple years.  Try below the dam like othes have said after a rain.  4-6 inch stick baits of a rapala in the trount patten.  I liked to wade across and fish the other side.  only got a few from there.  Biggest was about 30 but i saw bigger.  just could not catch them.

Status: offline 		i figured a trout color would work, they dump those trout right there and they have no were to go. There must be a big tiger or two below the dam, anyone know how deep that is?

Status: offline 		Right at the base of the dam used to pretty deep.  It comes up fast though.  Alittle down in the creek gets deep.  There is a spot where the water funnels out and enters the creek.  Looks like channel.  I not sure exact depth but it got deep quick and I backed out.  Not sure if all is the same there.  Have not been there in awhile but been thinking about heading there sometime soon to look.
