Finster -> Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/28/2007 9:38:06 PM)

5 Sailboats
4. 20 horse limit
3. Polluted... (ever smell the water, I think a handful of zebra mussels are in order)
2. Can't find a dock that sells bait. (at least last year unless that changed)
1. There ain't no fish in that lake.

I live in New Castle and that lake is about 10 miles from me. I never fish it. It's like going to Kmart, whatever I'm there for they don't have. Now I don't fish for Muskie but I am a walleye fisherman. It would be nice to jump in the boat and catch some eyes without having to drive for an hour or more. Why don't they stock that lake for real?

mr.fisherman -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/28/2007 10:51:26 PM)

Arthur is a 50 minute drive for me so I fish it many times each year. I fish from shore so its hit or miss being such a big lake and having to find the fish. Sometimes I hike a mile or 2 or three down the shore. I have waded areas that a boat would come around the corner and be shocked that some fool was standing in the water casting a line so far from an access. I had some of my best days at that lake this year. The only trip there that my dad made with me was his best day of catching there ever. And he first took me there when I was a kid over 2 decades ago. All of our catches were on soft plastics. I did not use bait there one single time this year.

I know man, arthur sucks, stay away from that lifeless pond![sm=eek10.gif]

dealinsteel -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 8:44:57 AM)

why is everyones solution to stock more fish and never has anything to do with becoming a better fisherman??  Everything I hear about Arthur and Pymatuning is about placing blame for their not being enough fish, but yet, no one ever says man, I fished Arthur and want to be a better fisherman, and want to find fish!!  Excuses are a way to settle for less than standard abilities, the fish are there.

haemofish -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 9:15:41 AM)

look at the arther report on the pa fish website.  The hardly netted any fish.  Dead sea for sure.

Finster -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 10:17:13 AM)

That's what the nick name of that lake is up here in New Castle, "The Dead sea".  I think stcking those stripers years ago ruined it. Who want's a striper anyway? There fun to catch but taste like CRAP.

rapala11 -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 11:50:21 AM)

we swim down there once in a while.  is it really polluted?

Finster -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 12:01:51 PM)

Yep, There is a main sewer line that runs through the lake. I think it leaks, although no one has fessed up to it. If you go up on the 528 bridge? (I think it's the highway) on a calm day you can see the nasty scum on the water. It is pretty gross.

rapala11 -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 1:28:47 PM)

guess we are done swimming there.

Porktown -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 1:39:19 PM)

There is a waste water treatment plant right by the lake.  When it is overflowed with rain water, raw sewage will leak.  Read the signs by the boat launch near the park office.  I don't think this happens often, but I'm sure it does happen.

I wouldn't worry about it infecting the swimming areas.  It is a state park, and most likely goes under the same type of testing that Presque Isle goes through.  If the bacteria is up, they'd likely close the beach area.

As for the wipers, I'd take them over a glass eyed log fish any day.  They dump a ton of those logs into Arthur, per their stocking reports, but don't seem to ever catch them.  There are a ton of largemouth in that lake though.  The panfish, largemouth, smallmouth, and wipers are enough to keep me happy.  Throw a pike or log fish into the mix every so often, and what more could you really ask for?  I do understand what you are saying about having to hike for logs though.  We have a ton in the rivers here, but who wants to eat them?

New Castle has it pretty good though.  Arthur right down the road, Shenango & Pymatuning aren't far, trout streams pretty close, and Erie isn't too bad of a hike.  You can even hit the Shenango River there, if you really need to catch a fish.

pgh_flytier -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 3:20:09 PM)

there is a sewage treatment plant on old 422, above the old 422 boat launch. That was built a couple of years ago to take the overflow sewage from the local town. Has anyone ever seen that used? The lake is smelly, but I think that is from the overgrowth of weeds and algae. I would be that is from fertilizer run off.  Arthur always was difficult to fish, but I don't think its a dead sea. I think there a lot of fish. There is an extreme amount of fishing pressure, I'm amazed at how many fish are caught there.

joebaker79 -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 5:07:39 PM)

my top 3 fish at lake arthur in four years of fishing it (havent been up since 03 or 04)

1.  38" 35 lb carp with a 28" girth
2.  45" musky, bottomed out a twenty lb scale
3.  27" hybrid striper with a 22" girth, estimated 14-15lbs.  plus many many ten lb stripers.

these were all from shore, not to mention quite a few 3 lb bass.  but i also had many days of less than stellar results.  hard lake to fish for sure, best shots are spring and fall, there are places the hybrids hang out in the spring within spitting distance from shore that very few people know or will talk about.  for musky fish the first days of spring when the water just starts to clear up from the thaw.  many follows.  small lures will catch them then.  carp was just a chance thing, but many guys are into them and the channels there, if i lived close id be there at night rigged for both, those two species of fish probably dominate that lake.

crappiefisher -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 6:42:39 PM)

  My 16 year old son Timmy & his 14 year old friend won some money in last weeks tornament,
dARN KiDs.

Some of the biggest carp I ever saw in there & prob. one of the best channel (over 26") waters around.
If I get time I'll look at Timmys log for this year. Lots of Pike & prob. over 300 L/M so far.

Be duckin & muskien this Nov. when I'm out.

plnoldrick -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 8:33:00 PM)

arthur is my kryptonite.... only fished it a couple times but each one has been horrible. and its not because i cant fish either. its just one of those lakes that you really need to know the lake well to be productive. unfortunatly i dont have the gas to be driving there all the time to get familiar.

Finster -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 8:35:13 PM)

OK..... i guess Arthur is great for CARP and catfish...... Who want's them though?  If I'm into carp and cats, I'll go to the river with a can of corn and 50 lb test line. Catch'em till my arms are sore. All I'm saying is that for the money the commission has, the jerks should spend a buck and do something with that lake. I would rather see a few million eyes stocked than one trout in a stream no bigger than a mud puddle. They are all dead by summer anyway since they can't stand the warm water. It's not like the fish commission buys land like the game commission or anything. Where is all my money going?

luvinbluegills -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 9:17:49 PM)

There's no fish in there. It's probably the deadest spot in the whole Northeast. No point going there anymore.

TransAmWS6 -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 9:28:06 PM)

i agree with the trout comment, WAY TOO MANY trout are stocked in PA, they are useless

carpin06 -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/29/2007 11:09:39 PM)

Finster, the fish com. does buy land, they just bought land on the erie tribs??

I do (carp that is).  Problem is, the few times that I've fished Arthur, I only get mostly catfish.  Now I don't mind catching cats if they are bigger (10+ lbs.), but anything smaller than that, gets old after awhile. C&R only.

I remember when jb posted the pic of his 35 lber. that he mentioned------- that's about the nicest carp I've seen pulled from a W. PA water.

Esox_Hunter -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/30/2007 2:49:21 PM)

How about for once blaming yourselves as fishermen before blaming a fishery for a change.  It is very easy to say Aurthor is a "dead sea".  However, many of you would not think this is you spent half as much time on the water as you do on this web site complaining.  Keep in mind there are very few lakes anywhere let alone in this area where even the best anglers will experience great days consistently.  For this area this lake is our most consistent trophy fish producer.  So save the excuses for not be able to catch fish on Aurthor.  It is not the fish commissions fault that you cant catch a walleye or any other gamefish.  If the lake is that dependent on stocking then it probably should not even be stocked.  I along with many others have seen/caught numbers of trophy fish in this fishery.  My advice spend more time fishing the lake, finding structure, finding baitfish,ect...

I thought the results were pretty decent contare to what was stated

luvinbluegills -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/30/2007 3:27:51 PM)

That's fiction. There are no fish left in there. All the original stocked fish have been eaten or died. Nobody fish there. Stay home or go to Erie. Better yet, watch the Stillers play.

First of all, I've been fishing longer than you have probably been alive. I'm more than sure I could out fish you any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Second, Learn how to spell ARTHUR dumb a$$!

Fishon1021 -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/30/2007 4:48:54 PM)

I agree.  No fish, no way.  Stay at home.  Lake is polluted. Too many sailboats.  Anything I missed.  Oh, how about a new one, the wipers ate all the other fish and then they died off from all the pollution in the fish they ate.  How about that one?

*commander* -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/30/2007 4:53:09 PM)

i, personally do not know the lake very well and it is not my favorite lake as far as number of fish caught per day goes. however there are plenty of fish that get caught in that lake.

LMAO!!!!!!! if youre that old and that good you should have no problem catching fish on Arthur. most of the guys that are agreeing with you are being very sarcastic. just as a for instance, go to this site. www.kbass.com go through and click on the bodies of water that get fished. look at the catches and the weights. these tourneys go on during weekends(busiest days) and there is a ton of pressure. many fish get caught out of lake arthur. its not the lake, its you.

Esox_Hunter -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/30/2007 6:12:24 PM)

Finster,

Pick the day and ill be there......id really prefer to be outfished twice on sunday...if thats possible for you
I agree with commander you have spent 21 years fishing and you still cant catch anything....Im embarassed for you.  It only took me a few trips there to catch some nice fish.  Anyhow, my point was too.....nevermind it truly is a dead-sea.

crappiefisher -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (8/30/2007 6:22:21 PM)

  Carpin,

my son caught a 40"er carp C/R this spring there, prob. 40 lbs. He sent pghmarty a few lousy
pitc. of it (old film) Have had some try & hump my leg while wadein that were bigger than that.
The lake does bite though for me. Yg slams the eyes in the fall there u/no?/ on the old rd. bed.
I give up on Arthur & hit the river it's a good place to trap beaver though u/no?/ North park is much better.
