Just wondering why our fish commission can't produce wipers on their own far as I know we have stripers in Raystown and whitebass everywhere like the Allegheny can't see where our biologists can't come up with some at the Linesville hatchery , considering their popularity and from what I've read fairly easy to raise, would eliminate depending on other states, if money is an issue then put a warmwater stamp in the equation, I for one think too much is put into trout at the expense of the warmwater angler, don't get me wrong I fish for trout just think we put a lot of them in marginal waters where they have no chance of making it through a summer.

crappiefisher -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/20/2007 6:02:49 PM)

They say it's not feasible to raise em at the moment [sm=dunno.gif]
Hope they get some leftovers again.

On a plus side they started raisin Channel cats this year [sm=help.gif]

yep. one of the most expensive shops around. he stocked what the bass guys needed though. if you wanted it, he had it. he fishes the KBBC tourneys.

pgh_flytier -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/21/2007 9:59:43 AM)

I remember Galida's, and I always wondered what happened to him. It used to be every time you read an article about lake Arthur they interviewed Galida.

I've caught some smallmouth below the dam.

cuchef -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/21/2007 11:48:00 AM)

John Galida sold his businesses then it was or maybe still is Appalachin something or other.  I think he owned/built Haulin Bass boats.  Which I believe he also sold.

crappiefisher -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/21/2007 6:22:09 PM)

I think John had the first bass boat in the area. He had won it in a fishin event. One of the first spinner bait & plastic worm guys around here.

I used to buy a bunch of worm harness supplies off him. Remember  Babe goin fishin the lake with him back in the late 70's once.  Think they both got skunked , atleast that's what Babe said [sm=icon_cry.gif]

Acs. at the spillway is still the same , hike from the parkin lot or park near the bridge.

i agree with the trout comment, WAY TOO MANY trout are stocked in PA, they are useless

I agree, although I don't see trout as being 'useless.' Trout can be fun to catch but why is this the only kind of fish that exists to so many fishermen around here? Put more money into stocking other fish as well.

cuchef -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/22/2007 1:54:46 AM)

Trout are very easy to culture.  Does PA stock "native stock" fish at least in the places that have native fish?

crappiefisher -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/22/2007 2:12:55 AM)

I wouldn't think so but they do stock fingerlings in certian streams throughout the St. Arthur should of had a great spring last year for a Pike spawn.  The lake wasn't lowered like most years after ice out. I think alot of em get stranded in the swamps when it gets lowered, bad time'n for the Pike.

Too bad they couldn't hold back lowerin it for afew extra weeks so they can do their thing & get back to the lake. They start spawnin when most of the lake is still iced over.

I remember that. They were after eyes and never caught one. I used to work at Roxy,s truck stop, there shop then was a Sinclair gas station.

cuchef -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/22/2007 6:12:39 PM)

I live in New York now.  NY stocks "native stock" fish They are fish that are bred from native fish, never see people, and are heartier meaning that catching them and releasing them won't kill them.  Essentially creating "native" fish. The fisheries also have good populations of native fish.  Trout are supposed to be there. They also don't enter the creeks looking for corn to eat... From growing up in PA I think the FC spends way too much money on the trout fishery.  I understand and agree with jug that these are the only fish some anglers from the area know.  I just think that accepting that southwest PA is not a prime coldwater fishery is the first step to changing in what is my mind wasting a lot of money.  If I remember correctly mostly rainbows are stocked.  At least brown trout are more likely to survive warmer water.  If the FC wants people to have a memorable experience why not simply stock tarpon.  They all will die in time they aren't supposed to be there.

startinout -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (12/22/2007 8:16:22 PM)

Crappie,
Do you eat walleyes out of behind the dam?  I've eaten them out of the Ohio river, but I don't think I'd touch them below the dam.  Fun fishing for muskies and bass down there though.  Tough to land though with all the logs.

Why did this post die off?  Bring it back half the fun of lake arthur was the fact that only half the guys that fished it did any good there.  Come on start it again.

MICK FISH -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (2/15/2008 11:13:31 PM)

Enjoyed the day off at Arthur today...14 hours of fishing less a trip to O'Donnells and a move from Muddy Creek to the church finger.  5:15am-7:15pm and the whole day was SLOW!!!!  1 large mouth, 1 crappie about a dozen baby gills and a half dozen pint size perch!  Beats working though!!!  Anyone else doing any good???

steelydaze -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (2/16/2008 2:09:13 AM)

Thats it! find yir own spot! [:D]

TBS -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (2/16/2008 11:10:44 AM)

I worked for Galida's in the early 80's & run into John occasionally at some of the KBBC tourney's. Him & Jeff B. (who also worked there), now are sporting good reps. I heard that John & Jeff went on to form SPORTCO. And if anyone remembers those beautiful fish mounts that where there,Bruce Stenn is still the magician with an airbrush. He just did a replica of a 13# walleye that my GF took on Erie last year. Not only did he do the body & fins but he now has a way of doing his own eyes for fish. The detail right down to the scales on the gill plates was UNREAL !!!
As for why did this thread die ??? Why keep whipping a dead horse? Arthur is no different than any other body of water. Anywhere you go,you'll have some knowledgeable anglers who can figure a pattern out and do well. Then you'll have some locals who spend more time one a particular body of water who are "in-the-loop". Some just get lucky. And the rest drive away saying to themselves & their fishin buddies "this place sucks" trying to save face for the fact that an innocent body of water & the fish who reside there wouldn't co-opererate. Go back and read the original post that started this mayhem. If he would spend more time on Arthur & actually would learn how to fish for the walleyes there...he'd be amazed how many big 'eyes are in there and they are not that hard to find or catch. But it's easier to blow of steam and blame an innocent body of water. Face it folks, this can be one of the most humbling sports one can take up. And NOTHING can make one better than actual time on the water.  F+L+P=S . The Linder boys made it real easy if your willing to do the work. AMEN. Now let's put this one to bed.
Tom

The only time I go to Lake Arthur to fish is on my buddy's boat, and we ALWAYS catch fish. We went up in May and worked a shoreline for hours and caught a lot of OK sized largemouth and would occasionally pull in a nice sized bass. Also in the summer it's fun to work the lillypads. I really don't mind fishing it because I love catching bass and it is close to my house.

STEELYS MANFISH -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (6/19/2008 2:09:19 PM)

Sorry about all your luck, have been fishing arthur for 2 years now and have been doing pretty well so far. This year alone have caught many L/M, A beautiful smallie and striper. Even pulled my first northern out of there. Wasnt a huge pike but sure was fun. My buddy even managed to pull out 2 Lake Erie worthy eyes form this craphole about an hour apart one evening this year. All of my fish have been from shore or wadein. Have been fishing this year since ice-out.

Definitly havent unlocked the secrets of this awesome lake but am enjoying the trials and tribs. Wish I was able to be on it more than I am capable of. Need to keep a log, this would help.

My six and 4 year old have even pulled out some decent L/M on Occasion[:D]. Most of the time I am detangling lines, rebaiting, and trying to keep em interested when the bite is slow but when they get 1 it makes it all worthwhile. Arthur has given me a great way to get the boys out and have some fun!

Big Tuna -> RE: Top 5 reasons Lake Arther SUCKS! (6/22/2008 12:41:26 AM)

I fished many times (Ice fished) close to John Galida and his red haided buddy, caught tons of huge LM through the ice, also ran into John and Babe Winklemen, trying to make a film on the OHIO river below dashsheild dam, they where in boats with camera crew,I was on shore, they got skunked,I pounded 50 or more eyes and saugers, I also made the cover of Pa. angler that day, they came close and ask me what I was useing, what else a Galida grub tail in smoke,John eye lit up and he must have given me 200 or more spring grubs in smoke and chartruse, very nice guy,so was Babe.
