I saw this shop last year on my way up but did not stop.  It looks big.  How is it?  I was thinking of stopping that on my way up this year.  Normally I stop at woodys for everything I need prior to going out.

They all have everything that you need. Buy locally, good selection and great prices. Compare. There are three shops on 13 just after you exit and more in town.

A few years ago my buddies went to Fat Nancy's to get info. and tackle. They came back to the camp with black spong and a ton of weight. That is not the best tackle for salmon or steelies. So we have never gone back.
Just my thoughts

I like to go in & look around. While they may give out the sponge set up from time to time (maybe the fish do snap at em'?) they have always been very nice & let you walk around & check stuff out as long as you want.
I went to Whitakers & All Seasons for the first time last year. I was really impressed (being a fly fisherman) with the variety & help. Really nice folks.
I hear of people talking down Yankee Fly Shop, but Dawn has always been very kind to me. I've never bought a ton of stuff there at once, but I do stock up yearly on materials I can't get any where else.
She even gave me directions to her fav. fishing spot one time when I wanted to get away from the crowds.

The thing I try to remember is to buy something when I go into a shop, even if it's a Coke & a pack of dubbing, or a few flies. Just a couple dollars spent can get you a wealth of up to date information if you're up there for a short period.
Spend a few bucks & they'll put you on fish the best they can. Everybody wins!

i liked the yankee when richie was still with us...  i'd say all seasons is my common spot.  but most shops will do.  most of them have what you need.

What happened to Richie? I used to go into that shop years ago when he owned it and he was a wealth of informationa and a real good guy. Everytime I went in he was tying.

OMG- I knew there was a fatal shooting there, but nothing like that. Terrible to hear it was one of the good guys.
We need more people like him in the world.

Duud- flies work for days too. If you break off in the rocks you are too deep. Those Salmons can't get under rocks, but I bet they'd like too. :coffee:

knew someone would say something, fly last for days huh,  so you never get snagged even if you arent to deep, or you never had the 35 lb missile turn and hit the fast water on you

I think he's saying in his opinion both work equally as well so he suggests the cheaper of the two.

Adam - shame on you for resorting to caveman techniques via your sponge flies.

Unlike you, I am a highly evolved mudshark liner and take great pride in fabricating my own flies. (a couple twists of estaz on a size 6hook is a thing of beauty)...

LMAO - gotta love Salmon Season !!!

I won't get into the great debate, but If one is hooking up every cast then something is going wrong and IMO the fish don't stand a chance.
We had thousands of salmon go by us on sunday & monday and we could only get a good reasonable # to take our offerings. It was a Great Day to catch maybe a dozen each day. We don't break off a fish that we intend to catch, whats the point of fishing for them then ?

sorry but had to say it....

sorry man but I don't fish those sucker holes durring salmon season. I don't get any rocks off fishing in a barrel or slinging cannon balls at them in the white pocket water (bowling for salmon).
I'm the guy that will find a stretch where the salmon will move and hold so that you can swing a fly to them without adding excessive weight or have to stand shoulder to shoulder.
Not every fish will take but the ones that do I will never have to question how they are hooked. Silly when you hear ppl say "It's hooked in the mouth"
Thank goodness it's almost over.

adam,

When you get some experience under your belt really knowing how to fish for these migratory fish you'll realize that if your fish goes downstream that quick after your hook-up, then you've got them in the a-s or in the back.

If you fish the rights technique(s) a solid hook-up in the mouth will have your fish swirl and you'll have control. Sure, after a few good head-shakes, they still can take you down, but you have control.

I don't care what kind of equip. you use, does'nt matter, how you catch them does. You be the judge, you'll only have more self-respect for doing it the right way.

Tight Lines,

OldSalt
