If you're going into the woods for an extended period of time ( a week or more), go to GNC and buy some yeast tablets.  Eat the yeast tablets for 3 or 4 days before you go into the woods, then eat 2 or 3 every day you are in the woods.  Your body will give off a smell that bugs hate, but your wife or girlfriend will probably hate it too, so it is not recommended for a short trip.  A rancher from Montana told me this a few years back and I tried it when I went fishing up in the Yaak last year.  It really worked well and you can get a bottle of yeast tabs for a few bucks.

long sleeves, citronella candles, they also sell coils you can burn(i think they are the same thing), and those battery operated repellents  you see people put in treestands down south.  Good luck

beavers are very territorial. they smack their tail on the water to try to scare you off, and to warn the other beavers.
