I only have 2 light weight trout rods, so I will get a new one for steel...I just need some ideas on wt and length... General consensus seems to like a 6-8wt (most guys will recommend a 7) at about 9 feet long. I made it through last season using two different 5 weights, and while they got the job done, once I hooked the fish I was pretty much along for the ride. Nothing fancy in terms of line, a standard WF floater should do everything you need it to do. Throw in a few 3X leaders, small shot, your indicator of choice and a box of buggers (#8), nymphs (princes, PTs, small stoneflies in #14-20), and egg flies (glo-bugs, sucker spawn, crystal meth in #12-16) and you should be good to go. You'll find a million different opinions on the ideal setup for Erie steel, but I dont think you'll find many who'll say the above setup wouldn't be appropriate.
