I have never fly fished for steel (have always wanted to), nor have I actually ever caught one, but I love fishing and fly fishing.  I will be doing nothing but hunting and fishing from the time I get home from Iraq sometime in Sept until at least the first of the year, and have had a blast meeting some of the guys from here on the perch outing a few years ago, so I would like to come and meet some new guys (as well as maybe catch some fish with the help of some fishing vets).

I will help out anyway I can, just let me know.  I will have to see what the hunting gets me before hand, cause if some deer happen to cross me while out with the bow I will bring up some good stuff, and depending on if I get home early enough to make it out after some geese, I will bring up some of my goose ka-bobs.

I only have 2 light weight trout rods, so I will get a new one for steel...I just need some ideas on wt and length....I can't wait to get home and wet a line again!!!

General consensus seems to like a 6-8wt (most guys will recommend a 7) at about 9 feet long. I made it through last season using two different 5 weights, and while they got the job done, once I hooked the fish I was pretty much along for the ride. Nothing fancy in terms of line, a standard WF floater should do everything you need it to do. Throw in a few 3X leaders, small shot, your indicator of choice and a box of buggers (#8), nymphs (princes, PTs, small stoneflies in #14-20), and egg flies (glo-bugs, sucker spawn, crystal meth in #12-16) and you should be good to go.

You'll find a million different opinions on the ideal setup for Erie steel, but I dont think you'll find many who'll say the above setup wouldn't be appropriate.

Cold, thanks for the info.  I have been reading a lot of posts that said 7wt, so I figured I would be good getting one of them, but figured I would ask cause I would rather get some advice from people that do it then spend the money on one that wouldn't work.

Tim, thanks for the invite.  I will be heading up by myself, and will definitely need someone to show me the ropes.

I would also be up for a trip or two before that date to try and catch some.  I will return the favor to anyone interested in helping me catch some steel with a waterfowl hunt this year or some bass/musky/bowfishing/any other fishing trip next year.  I'm getting a 17' bass boat and will be out as much as possible.

Frost,
I'll second the motion of being a guide but I think Tim would be better. But I will have extra rods/reels available if you want to use one of mine. Just shoot me a pm. My primary rod won't be used because my goal for the "One Fly" is to be able to catch a steelhead, on a dry fy that I (or my grandson, or DT) tied, on a bamboo rod that I built. Already got the rod and the flies.

Gentlemen,
Still looking for a volunteer to handle the publicity for the event. Basically it's handing out flyers to the various sporting goods stores in the Erie Area, and writing up a nice news release/story of the event when it is through, so we can send it to the papers.

I would normally be willing to help with publicity and news - that is if I had ever participated and had half an idea of what it's all about. Though, I would be up for hard manual labor or simpleton tasks that a one-fly would be able to do.

Unfortunately "Beer" anything is OUT! the park doesn't allow it and there will be minors there. And it's my azz, as the organizer, who will take the hit. Now at the "Night Before", which is held in a bar/resturant, where there are tables and such sounds good to me. Get with PaTim about it.

If you want to turn this into a drinking event then just come to our campsite... we'll be at it all week/weekend. The "one fly" isn't the place.

pxatim,
Will there be the "falling asleep outside by the fire" Competition going on this year at your campsite? Before or after the "One Fly"? Have you made pre-contact with Crowleys' yet?

To anyone who has never experienced the One Fly it is a must do on the list! The people are great! It is a lot of fun and a great way to meet and greet people on this board who love to steelhead fish in the waters of Erie,PA. I cannot wait for this years event. I will also try to make it up for the night before dinner and gathering for sure. Indsguiz, and all the others who make this possible, thank you very much for your hospitality, all the work you guys put in to make this such a great event. You are all very very special people!

Gadabout,   While there are many people who help out, this is primarily a "peoples event"  We only get what folks bring.  I have refused to charge a "entrance" fee and I hope It will always be that way.  Many very nice folks have stepped up and helped out with what was a "little friendly get together".  This year I HOPE to have 76 openings for folks.  The prizes will be fewer this year but I hope better.  Maybe more of the vest filler type.  We shall see what happens.  This year I promise to devote more of my time to meeting people.  Last year I had barely 2 minutes to give to each person and that made me seem a bit rude and rushed.
Still looking for a person to handle the writing of the report of the event to the local papers.
