Try carrying and using a pair of long reach forcepts, or long handled, needle nose pliers.  Or carry a pair of good leather work gloves to handle the things with.

catfish dont sting you,they get you with their fins.avoid the fins and you will be fine.

You could ask carcus1211 to borrow a "love glove".[8D]

Seriously...Skips answer of long forceps is the way to go.

Fishken -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 8:33:18 AM)

The small ones hold just behind the head avoid the dorsal fin & let the side fins stick out between you fingers.When you release them just open your hand & drop them straight down into the water.

fshngaddict -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 8:53:23 AM)

Yes hold the dorsal fin down with the palm of your hand and the side fins out, the left one with your thuumb and the right one with your index and middle fingers. They have to get really really big before this does not work. If they do puncture your skin with one of those fins it hurts for a long time.

washdog -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 8:54:59 AM)

I always carry long needle nose pliers with me. No need to even touch them. Grab the hook and turn it out with a little shake.

It's the spines on the back dorsal fin and the two pectoral fins on the front sides that are sharp and can stick you.  Take a look next time and locate the three spines on the ends of the three fins and then you will know exactly where they are.

Also if you want to pick the catfish up, place your thumb and your pointer finger over the top of it's back down around the tail , in a U shape, and slide your hand toward the head. you can get up under the dorsal fin with the area of your hand between your thumb and pointer finger ,and then use your thumb and pointer finger to get under and hold open the two pectoral fins.

JEB -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 9:03:51 AM)

Push down top barb with palm of your hand, grab behind to side barbs with pointer finger and thumb. Or if there not over ten pounds just thumb them like a bass, they will clamp down on your thumb, doesn;t hurt too bad.

indsguiz -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 10:59:27 AM)

Wear leather gloves and you can "lip" them just like a bass.  Works well.  Now I have to add that I have an acquaintence who still refuses to carry forcepts, pliers or leather gloves.  Claims it's too much trouble to carry the extra stuff.  He tries to grab the hook and twist/push it out.  He gets "stung" a lot.  My advise to him has been"  make life easy for yourself or quit fishing for cats".  I mean really, by the time you carry the big rod, the chicken livers, the dough balls, the stringer, the three oz weights, the extra spool of 40 pound line, and the container of 2/0 to 3/0 hooks, and the bucket to sit on , , , how much weight /room does a pair of foreceps take up?  And leather gloves make carrying the bucket easier.

saltydog -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 4:19:09 PM)

you are not using the right hooks. circle hooks are perfect for catfish. hookset is ALWAYS right in the corner of the mouth. a pair leatherman or gerbers is all that you need.

Once again, center of all the jokes... but seriously... it's all about the "LOVE GLOVE"... i can't patent the name cause KJH started it.... I talk to more and more ppl everyday that share a story about how a pike/muskie/even an eye have torned up there hands with their teeth and how it would have been great to have the "LOVE GLOVE" with them.  So eat my shorts slick...lol.. you are even one of them... I also wear it in rememberance of little Mikey...too bad it's orange and black and not white..lol..

Mr.Slickfish -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 6:27:28 PM)

It's just become funny to rough ya up bout that.[:D]  I am actually considering one for pike, maybe even those killer perch days. The little guys keep stabbin' me back.

hiclassHilbilly -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 8:52:09 PM)

I bought a fish scale/hanger all in one.  It has a pair of wide jaws that open and you grab behind their jaw  and then use forecepts to pull the hook out.  I havent touched a steelhead or a catfish with my hands in 2 years.   Better for you and definately better for the fish.  Plus, you can weigh them!!

Cost me about $35

carpin05 -> RE: what the hell??? (7/1/2009 9:26:08 PM)

I droped one on the ground once after taking the hook out and tryed to kick it bake to the water and it got me through my shoe!!!!!![sm=shocked.gif][sm=cussing.gif]

just clunk them on the head with a blackjack...

that usually takes the struggle out of em..

BloodyHand -> RE: what the hell??? (7/7/2009 9:58:24 PM)

I could never go to the glove! I would have to change my screen name than. Slickfish turned me on to the gerber fold-em-up pliers and that seems to do the trick when the hemo's are too small.

harrypelles -> RE: what the hell??? (7/7/2009 11:15:15 PM)

From the story I heard last week about your "Bloody Hand", I'd put on anything to avoid something like that happening to me.
