donpgh -> Night Fishing (7/1/2009 12:20:04 AM)

Where can one go at night around here to fish? Years of angling and tournament experience here but new to the Pgh. area. No boat for now, so I am relegated to shore fishing. Any tips are appreciated.

Around Here? Pittsburgh is pretty big. I prefer Highland Park Dam on the sharpsburg side. Also where pine creek enters the river, lock 3 in harmarville, emsworth dam on the rt. 65 side, across from heinz on river avenue, these are good areas for a mixed bag, walleye, sauger, bass, catfish, carp, white bass and more. Behind the prison off rt. 65 is good for carp and cats, also any sewer overflow along the river after a good hard rain is great for carp and cats. Also any of the streams where they feed into the rivers are productive 99% of the time.

That's disgusting...  The likely by catch of toilet paper, tampons or condoms should be mentioned if you are attempting this.  The smell alone is horrible enough.

They definitely do attract fish though.

Highland Park dam at Sharpsburg is definitely the place to go...[:D]

11kalnmitc -> RE: Night Fishing (7/1/2009 2:47:56 PM)

never been to highland park dam, how big is it?  what type of fish are in it?
around here, mammoth is the place for bass at night and for cats and carp st. vincent lake[:)]

IrishRed -> RE: Night Fishing (7/1/2009 3:18:14 PM)

Highland park is premier fishing on the allegheny, it's definitely worth the trip. There are usually a few folks there.  [:D]

It's a mixed bag down there really, but others will let you know the best times to fish, etc.

One warning about night fishing, in few attempts i've made to night fish from the shore i've run in to some interesting characters that frequent the shores of the river at night. I myself definitely would not be down there alone.

Porktown -> RE: Night Fishing (7/1/2009 3:31:14 PM)

I was joking about it being the best, although it is good night fishing.  It's a bit of a hassle to get to though.  I wouldn't worry too much about the company, usually pretty good guys.  Some, may give you the feeling that you are not welcome, since they "own" the place...

What river? What part of Pittsburgh? The Allegheny has some good spots up north..

Iron City -> RE: Night Fishing (7/1/2009 10:12:23 PM)

who doesn't enjoy seeing an Allegheny Whitefish. I even saw one of the "Magnum" variety last week. Makes me think twice about wakeboarding....

You're right about being cautious at Highland Park fishing at night. I tried it Thursday evening with a friend. A shady character comes along and wants us to give him our equipment, so he doesn't have to call his "boys". I had brought along another friend named Smith & Wesson, and he convinced the creep that we wanted to keep our equipment. He disappeared quickly, but we beat feet out of there in case he DID have some boys to back him up. I won't be going back there anytime soon. We got skunked for the evening, anyway.

Smith and Wesson are two different people so you should have said friends......

goslow -> RE: Night Fishing (7/5/2009 6:14:53 PM)

The Mon River at the mouth of Dunlap Creek in Brownsville, PA. It's safe, clean and even lighted. The Mon Wharf in Monongahela and the mouth of Pigeon Creek in the same town are also good. Finally, don't forget about the mouth of Montour Run in McKees Rocks and the mouth of under the West End Bridge in Pittsburgh.

i dont know bout all yins, but where i night fish is in the middle of woods and tonight me and a buddy of mine went out and we had a fire and lanterns and even backed truck mt truck down to spot 5 feet from shore. I noticed a smell of dead animal when we got their tonight at 8 it was close but ehh i guess far enough away plus to we are at point on body f water we fished so nothing in front or round us only behind where smell coming from and we had multiple times big things come up on us not the size of a rat but more like coyote to small bear and ill tell ya what thats just as intense as a person when you are unarmed

NotherOne -> RE: Night Fishing (7/8/2009 10:27:24 PM)

i night the rivers . never had a problem with night creatures. well one time a rat the size of a beagle stole my bag of doritos. i let him have them.

Big Fathead -> RE: Night Fishing (7/13/2009 11:12:46 AM)

Just wanted to let you know fishing is real good right now at the highland park dam!

That's Saw Mill Run.  I've had clowns cast over top of me while I was fishing from the rocks below, during THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY...  I wouldn't even consider night fishing there.  The parking there is pretty horrible too.

I also had similar experiences at the mouth of Chartiers Creek, and wouldn't consider night fishing there as well.  There is usually raw sewage in that creek mouth with any rain, and usually 2-3 days after.

I agree, you should try some other spots, the river is very long.  Good idea!

MeTaLaNgLeR -> RE: Night Fishing (7/14/2009 2:04:27 PM)

Highland Park is public fishin correct?

slabfinder -> RE: Night Fishing (7/14/2009 6:01:14 PM)

Doesn't matter if its public or not. A short bus will only hold so many retards on one trip. Besides I'll stick to my little slice of pie.

BrookTrout26 -> RE: Night Fishing (7/15/2009 5:54:17 PM)

Doing some night fishing tonight with some buddies down toward the Freeport area. Anyone hooking anything down that way?

I'll let ya know how we do.

BrookTrout26 -> RE: Night Fishing (7/16/2009 1:25:36 AM)

3 of us.

Didn't get sh*t.

Caught 2 15-16in. catfish. That's it. Fished for about 3 hours, few hits, not many.
