Got that from some site that let's you make likeness-ish avatars by selecting features like a police sketch. They come pretty close, in a cartoonish way. I'll post a link if I can find it.

Were you leaving or going to fish in the evening? I've told several people where to find them. And p.s. some guys were right catfish enter mill and cascade in the early evening. My biggest was on Friday a 16 pound hawg caught on a bucktail jig tipped with nightcrawler worked EXTREMELY slow. I also caught some bass on Dingers but wasn't the greatest day. Ever since the big rain the fishing has been terrible on the bay

Hey Kast, it was a while ago I saw you at Cascade...maybe a month or so.  I wasn't actually fishing, just walking with a lady.  There was an older dude drinking Budweiser down there.  Don't know if he was with you or not.  Anyway, I went back a few days later and caught 4 Largemouth on 6 casts.  Then it started pouring rain and I took off.  Have been meaning to go back, but never got around to it.  I think the city side is better than peninsula side of the bay right now.  Was at various spots on Presque Isle today and only managed two smallish largemouth and a couple bluegill.  Stopped cityside on the way home and caught a Largemouth and a Rockbass just about in the dark.  I agree, though, the bay all around has been slow since the rains.  Haven't really caught a good sized largemouth since then, but the Pike don't seem to mind.  Anyway, thanks again for the tip.

Hey, Kmp, just read your latest report...was wondering: isn't it illegal to use gobies for bait?  Have often been tempted out on the lake smallmouth fishing, but always thought it was a violation of some sort.  Anybody know for sure?

I found Goby info in this smallmouth article:

According to Pennsylvania fisheries biologist Chuck Murray, the goby population in Lake Erie grew enormously from 1998 through 2003, and has leveled off recently. But in the last decade the goby has become the most abundant forage fish for smallmouths.

That's part of the reason for the increased growth rate of Lake Erie's smallmouths.

Thus, if you want to catch a big smallmouth in the clear waters of Lake Erie, use a 4- or 5-inch, green-pumpkin-colored tube jig that is dragged or lightly hopped over an irregular bottom.

Sometimes other colors work well, of course, and some anglers, especially guides who fish with people not accustomed to working jigs in 15 to 22 or more feet of water, use a bottom-crawling three-way rig with a light weight and small hooked minnow or crayfish (it's illegal to keep or fish with gobies).

(it's illegal to keep or fish with gobies). Really ?? I was under the impression that any fish caught legally (size , season , etc.) was legal to use for bait.

From the PFBC website:

quote:

BAITFISH includes all forms of minnows; suckers, chubs, fallfish, lampreys, eels between 6 and 8 inches in length; gizzard shad 8 inches or less; and all forms of darters, killifishes and stonecats (except those listed as threatened or endangered species). Legally taken gamefish may be used as bait. It is unlawful to use or possess goldfish, comets, koi, and common carp as baitfish while fishing.

quote:

TAKING AND KEEPING BAIT is permitted using rod and reel or handline, dip net, or minnow seine not over 4 feet square in diameter, or a minnow trap with no more than two openings that shall not exceed 1 inch in diameter. All devices must be under the immediate control of the person using them. Unattended minnow traps or baitfish containers left in Commonwealth waters must be identified with the owner’s or user’s name, address, and telephone number. If fishing in a group and the total number of fishbait or baitfish taken exceeds the possession limit (50), separate containers must be provided for the fishbait and baitfish. Total possession limit in any one container may not exceed 50 baitfish or fishbait combined.

Thanks, Cold.  I checked out their website and found this:

Aquatic species banned in Pennsylvania
(sale, barter, possession or transportation)

Bighead carp (Hypophtalmichtys nobilis)
Black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus)
European rudd (Scardinius erythropthalmus)
Quagga mussel (Dreissena bugensis)
Snakehead (all species)
Round goby (Neogobius melanostomus)
Ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus)
Rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus)
Silver carp (Hypophtalmichtys molitrix)
Tubenose goby (Proterothinus marmoratus)
Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha)

If it's illegal to possess these species I think that means you can't use them for bait.  You can catch gamefish and baitfish and use them, but not the AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species).  I think.

In waters where they're not present, it is indeed big trouble to introduce them, but in the Erie watershed, even catching one would violate the "posession" law as you interpret it.
