Glade Run Dam
Glades Dam
Greisiner Dam
Jonston Dam
Lake Saxony Dam
Moraine State Park Dam
Oneida Dam
Sawmill Run Dam

Treesdale Farm Dam

If you need any additional information, or if I can be of assistance with a state government related matter, please contact my office, or visit my Web site at RepEllis.com.

Fish & Boat Commission, PA American Water Celebrate Reopening of Public Fishing at Butler County ReservoirsBUTLER COUNTY, PA, (June 5, 2009) - With a ceremonial “first cast” by local and state officials, Pennsylvania American Water and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission today marked the reopening of the Oneida and Thorn Run Reservoirs in Butler County for shoreline fishing.

“Our partnership with the Fish and Boat Commission paved the way to reopen these reservoirs for fishing, while ensuring the safety of our drinking water and creating an enjoyable experience for all who visit,” said Pennsylvania American Water President Kathy Pape. “We are delighted to provide the community with excellent fishing and a place for family recreation among the reservoirs’ scenic beauty.”

Pennsylvania American Water closed the Butler County reservoirs (Oneida and Thorn Run) in response to the events of September 11, 2001. Because of the need for increased security, Pape said Pennsylvania American Water and its parent company American Water worked with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Homeland Security to help determine risk and develop security recommendations and solutions for the water industry.

“We’re very pleased to have successfully worked with Pennsylvania American Water and other local officials to reopen these two popular sites for public fishing,” said Fish and Boat Commission Executive Director Doug Austen. “Our local waterways conservation officer, Jon Kay, was instrumental in establishing this partnership, which will benefit not only local sportsmen but also the wider community in the form of local spending and tourism dollars.”

Pennsylvania American Water created a dedicated telephone number – 1.866.808.4219 – to report suspicious activity. Pennsylvania American Water representatives will report the activity to the proper law enforcement or Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission authorities. All other inquiries will be directed to the company’s customer service center at 1.800.565.7292.

"Fishing at Oneida Dam is a fond memory of my childhood. I am pleased that Pennsylvania American Water has taken the steps necessary to work with the state's Fish and Boat Commission and others to reopen the area for recreational fishing," said Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Vice Chairman Tyrone J. Christy.

He added, “We all understand the importance of protecting our water resources from possible tampering. We also must be mindful of the importance that locations such as Oneida Dam play in the local community. I commend everyone for working together to return this area to a place where the neighbors can come for inexpensive recreation. Now my generation can again bring their children to Oneida dam, creating new memories."

Pennsylvania American Water and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission worked together to create rules and regulations that will ensure the safety of the water supply as well as those fishing. The rules include:

· Designated fishing areas: Access to both reservoirs is limited. Fishing areas have been designated with appropriate signage. Major roadways parallel both reservoirs and no parking areas also have been designated to prevent pedestrian accidents.

· No trespassing: To better protect the source of supply, several areas are designated off-limits to fishing and have been marked with no trespassing signs.

· General rules of operation:

o Fishing is permitted at both reservoirs between dawn and dusk

o Shoreline fishing is permitted, but wading will not be permitted

o Boats are also not permitted on the waterway

o Commonwealth inland fishing rules and regulations and Fish and Boat Commission property regulations apply to this property

Local anglers can expect to find several different and popular sport fish. Based on a recent fisheries survey, the species include largemouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish.

The mission of the Fish and Boat Commission is to protect, conserve, and enhance the Commonwealth’s aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities. For more information about fishing and boating in Pennsylvania, please visit our website at www.fishandboat.com.

How did I know it would become political or was from the first email?

Anyway, atleast we don't have to worry about fishing some of our favorite spots, for now.

This is great news for all fishermen & that rep.should be congratulated for his efforts. It would be great for as many people as possible to e-mail him & let him know we appreciate his work. I will be forwarding this as soon as I figure out how to, To the Westm'd County Commisioners to show them how the government should work for the good of thier constituants. Now it is up to us fishermen to see that there is no littering or any other activities that would jepordise this opportunity.Maybe we will still be able to get Beaver Run Resivore open yet.  sam

spoonchucker -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/6/2009 1:33:17 PM)

Mr. Crappie,

I believe that Rep. Ellis is just reporting on an event in his district. It was the PF&BC ( and local WCO Kay ), that got this done. That's not a slam against Ellis. I just doubt that he had much if anything to do with it.

mr.crappie -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/6/2009 1:53:45 PM)

spoon, all I can go by is from the experience that we had here with the municipal authority & the westm'd co. comm. After a huge effort by many people & thousands of signatures on petitions along with a great deal of work by our WCO Ron Evancho we were let down by our county comm. & the PFC backed down in thier efforts & I feel abandoned us. I believe that you have been around long enough to know that a state rep. or senator has more influence than a politicly appointed state agency. You know the "golden rule" who has the gold, makes the rule.   sam

BIGHEAD -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/7/2009 8:03:20 AM)

So does that mean they are going to move the buoys right up to the dam at moraine? other than the 100 yards from the dam.

rippinlip -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/7/2009 10:30:33 AM)

TIOAngler -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/24/2009 12:37:29 AM)

I fished Oneida Dam 2nite for the first time since it got reopened. It was packed and ran into one rude couple. The story, when I finally found a spot, I jumped out of my car walked down scouted the area, went back up. I didn't even know a vechile was close to being behind me on the dirt rode on the other side of the lake. I checked out the lake for maybe 15 seconds and just to see if there was a spot to shore fish. I was visible and wanted to make sure the fishing area was not in a spot where I'd get fined for fishing. A car pulls up behind me as I was walking to grab my rod and the couple bolted out as fast as they could, ran down and took my spot. I must have looked angry or like I was thinking of doing something to spite them. A game commission guy comes out of nowhere and reminds me that if I go fish on the dam I will get fined. I calmly asked if the area the couple ran down to was actually a safe area for future reference and for the possible joy of seeing them get fined. The area was safe. haha
After the experience though, I was quite impressed at how many people I saw fishing. I saw young kids catching sun fish and ran into a guy who had good luck catching blue gill and perch. Seems to be a great place to go with on your own, with friends or family. I caught 2 bass. 1 largemouth and 1 smallmouth. Nothing impressive size wise but it's worth checking out again. Just watch out, the game commission seems to cracking down to insure people our following the rules since the dam got re-opened. Basically the entire lake is free game. Just don't fish on the dam and there's a big sign.

CmplxSimon -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/25/2009 10:14:43 AM)

I know this is primarily an open water forum, however, I wonder what allowances will be made for the ice fishing season on these newly re-opened waters?  I have always wanted to fish Oneida thru the ice.

cypry85 -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/26/2009 12:13:08 AM)

I don't think it will happen this season...but it may.

spoonchucker -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/26/2009 7:56:02 AM)

"Anyone find a chrome bankstick with a camo bite alarm at thorn in the last 2 weeks? Fell asleep woke up and packed up and forgot it."

I hope you were not night fishing.

cypry85 -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (6/26/2009 11:47:03 PM)

Nope...was the middle of the day...woke up as red as a tomato. I would love to night fish there but you cant and it sucks.

cypry85 -> RE: Butler Co Dams Opening (7/14/2009 9:45:27 AM)

Anyone else having any luck at the dams that re opened?
