New to the area and would like as much info as possible about fishing the Allegheny River around the Highland Park area.  Tactics, parking locations, fish types, etc. would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance

There is a ton of info on here.  I haven't fished L2 in some time, so am not 100% sure of the access any more.  Where I used to park, started getting posted about 6-7 years ago.  I know there are other ways in though, as there are always people there.

allfish -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/2/2009 1:00:08 PM)

Honestly, and for the love of God, Highland Park doesnt need any more fisherman. the river is 145 miles long from Warren to Pittsburgh - try a few of the spots north of Highland Park.

beerman0303 -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/3/2009 11:15:20 AM)

Matt I sent you a pm, check your inbox.

PAJohn531 -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/3/2009 11:53:05 AM)

WOW!!!! I wasn't aware that the River is privately own.

beerman0303 -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/3/2009 1:03:02 PM)

It's not.  But I'm sure if twenty people start parking where I do you will soon see NO PARKING signs

PAJohn531 -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/3/2009 1:47:48 PM)

I totally agree with that...but...to tell someone look elsewhere to fish is just uncalled for in my book. The tongue is light but some have a hard time holding it!!!!! Also Hats off to you sending a PM and helping someone out.

Porktown -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/3/2009 2:33:34 PM)

This attitude is very common amongst the very limited (productive) shore access spots in the Pgh area.  2 guys, 2 lawn chairs, cooler of beer, and 4+ rods taking up 20-30 feet of the 50 feet available.  Or the guy that fishes 3-4' away from you when there is a wide open stretch, because it is the spot he always fishes...  This is a big reason that I invested the money for a boat.  The rivers suck for shore access, and the spots that are productive always attract those that think they can take ownership.

esoxwrangler -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/3/2009 6:42:22 PM)

Hey no fishing on the mon either, I own that one. Hey Matt many types of on the allegheny, nothin out of the ordinary, many parkin spots aswell 13th street in sharpsburg has a nice dock. Dont know if your fishin from a boat or shore but out in the boat jig and minnow do great for walleye and sauger.

DanesDad -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/3/2009 11:18:33 PM)

I havent been down there for a while, but they used to let you park just outside the lock itself. There was a sort of park leading into it with a couple places you could park. I'm sure you could fish all along this several hundred yard stretch. Once I got to the lock itself, I parked in a lot right outside the fence sorrounding the lock. Then, I walked up to the railroad tracks, [past the actual lock], and went down to the shore at the end of the lock. There was about a 50 yard stretch from the wall at the end of the lock, to a small stream coming in. That was where I fished. The only reason I'm saying this publicly is because this spot is wildly popular and no secret. I've seen guys go down there and catch 50 white bass (the limit at the time), then disappear for 20 minutes or so (presumably, putting the fish in their vehicles) then showing up and continuing to fish. If you go there, expect conditions similar to opening day on a popular trout stream. Shoulder to shoulder It is very popular in May and June when the Sauger and White bass are in. Later, you can expect some nice smallmouths and the occasional walleye. I always did good with minnows, but when the white bass are in, almost anything works.

I should qualify by saying it has been better than ten years since I fished there and things may have changed.

Hey, all I suggested is that someone try places OTHER than Highland Park. I aint a snob - that is MY opinion. I am tired of 3 guys fishing 2 lines a piece and taking up 100 yards of shoreline with their lines - and its always the newbies who do it because they have no courtesy. Until it happens to you, get off my caboose and put it to music.

Have a nice day.

I would like to agree with this, but happens way too often by guys that seem to live there.

I haven't fished the place in 4-5 years, and dealt with this issue from the first time fishing there until the last time.  Maybe it's different now?  Most of the same guys sitting on their lawn chairs from when I started until when I finished.  They all seemed to be nice guys when talking to them, but definitely put off an attitude that I was fishing in their spot.  Especially if I caught a nice fish or happened to show up before they could stake claim.  Most would just park 3-4' next to me and stake claim regardless.  I was one of the only guys with one rod, no chair, and everything that I needed strapped to me.

IrishRed -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/11/2009 1:34:07 PM)

I agree there are many places to fish but folks can fish as they wish where they want to. You may not like it, but it's their right.  If you don't want to be the guy shimmying up to someone else then go elsewhere.

Unless you own a boat and can go anywhere on the rivers, you aren't going to have a spot all to yourself.

Also, I disagree with your comment that "and it's always the newbies who do it because they have no courtesy". Don't lump everyone together. I'm not an experienced fisherman by a long shot but being a "newbie fisherman" and have general manners are two totally different things.

I'd have to suggest you mosey on down the river to another location if highland park makes you so frustrated. That's my opinion.

PAJohn531 -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/11/2009 1:40:30 PM)

I too haven't fished there in many more years then that. It was easier for me to find other spots then argue with people who THOUGHT they owned the river. I never thought for one minute I was entitled to MY SPOT and if someone beat me there ...Oh well...I got up earlier the next time. I never spread out but I took up as much room as I needed for 2 rods and a chair in between my rods. Someone ask what they were hitting on I answered their question. Just like I hope people answer me when I ask. I enoyed seeing people new to the Sport and river fishing catch fish because of something I suggested.

LoganWade03 -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/11/2009 2:23:24 PM)

WOW the animosity and egocentrism on this board cracks me up sometimes...Makes me want to pack a bus full of little kids and stack the banks along highland park area.  Granted it sucks to arrive at a spot you planned on fishing only to find someone already fishing it but that doesnt mean they are any less entitled to that spot on a PUBLIC waterway than you! Reguardless if they have been fishing that place for 50 years or if it's there first time to the spot that carries no relavance to where they should and should not be fishing.  Allfish why don't YOU try some OTHER spots than highland park if it's that big of a deal to you, get away from the crowds do some exploring and find somewhere thats your spot that no one else knows or a select few know of.  If that fails get a boat, granted that costs money but I purchased a boat at the age of 18 so im not really seeing an issue with that depends on how much you want it I guess and then you won't have to worry about the "newbies" and people taking up your private shoreline.  I am frequently a newbie to different areas because I enjoy fishing new water and this attitude is absolutely common among numerous spots I have been to.  Guys coming in and casting right on top of you, crossing you, and then when you catch a fish they give you a dirty look and then what to know exactly what your using and how your presenting it, as if they arent close enough to see already.  I feel those lacking courtesy and respect are the guys who think they own the waterbody and other shouldn't be able to fish there.  It is what it is and both sides will always exist just my 2 cents

Big Fathead -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/11/2009 3:25:14 PM)

Not calling for backup! Just think people can see what kind of person I really am. The rivers all your buddy, I'm fishing where I can eat the fish now. Maybe see ya in the fall. Who knows maybe you'll lighten up a little by then! You never know I could be a painter, could be a charter captain, could be a commissioner, could be a clown, could be a young kid, could be a elderly person, could be your nightmare, may be in your dreams, really not sure BUT I do know I've long forgotten about what you tried to accomplish on Fisherie. Good luck at da river I will see you there sooner or later, It's only a matter of time. I'll know you and you won't know me! When will you forget about that one morning that upset you so much? I'm not feelin' alot of love from you. Oh well its sleepy time, I gotta go nighty nite. I think you should change your name from Katfishin to the other word for Cat to P****fishin. You know what I mean don't you? Sorry but I had to throw one stone here tonight. I will not check what you put for a response, so don't waste your time! I'm more than done with you clown! Have a good life fishin at the ****. Later!

JT83 -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/16/2009 5:53:35 AM)

Dont sweat it Fathead and Wallyeyes, this dude was basically run off of another catfishing site because he was such an ass on there.  Seems like he is trying to get the same treatment here.  Luckily he stays south and not anywhere near where I fish.[:D]

esoxwrangler -> RE: Allegheny around Highland Park (6/16/2009 7:22:33 AM)

Did you ever look at what floats down the river after a good rain. I just could never eat fish out of there.
