Unfortunately, I don't have a boat and I haven't been successful in getting someone to take me along on their boats, so I'm stuck shore fishing. can anyone recommend a good spot to try? Any help is appreciated.

there are lots of places from shore / wade to fish you might have to get you feet wet.  geting a map of the lake might be a big help.   not sure what fish you are going after??

I usually don't put much on this web site but I do read alot on this site but I just can't go without speaking my mind about last night. I have been striper fishing at night for around 18 or 19 years and have NEVER seen a group of idiot's worse than last night up at the big island on that flat. Now I know it's a day before the holiday and it's a weekend night but to have 18 boats in an 1/2 acre spot is a little much, it's beyond stupid. I was the fourth boat there and got their around 8:30pm by 11:00pm there was about 13 boats their about the most that can fish that spot without people casting into other boats and then the kicker 5 j---off's come up from the bear run launch at 11:45pm and come in there like they own the lake. What would make you guys come to that island from the bear run launch when you put your boat in and looked up at the island and it was already lit up like a christmas tree, do you guys have a brain in your head and then to squeez in around other boats being less than 20 feet away is that really fishing. If you want to do that or like to fish that way GO TO ERIE IN THE FALL. And one of those five boats that came in late thought that since NOBODY was fishing on the dam side of the flat he was going to go over their, well the first thing he did was come within 5 feet of my boat run over my lines and proceeded to go up there, what happens next he gets stuck and he is one of SMART boaters that think buying a trolling motor is a waste of money. So he's up there gasing his 1962 mercury making ALL kinds of noise churning enough water up to lift some boats anchor's and after 15 minutes he leaves and goes out into the deeper water. And than the the guy that wanted to fish in my boat the one a--hole that anchored in front of the first buoy what were you thinking, I was casting in that spot 2 hours before you even had your boat hooked up and caught 3 fish there even before you put your boat in the water and you WONDER why you couldn't catch any fish. I could keep going on last night but I won't. Rule number ONE you should not be within casting distance of anthor boat. Rule number TWO if your spot has boats there when you arrive go somewhere else. Rule number three don't forget a trolling motor, anchor and your brain.

Amen Brother!!!
I have had the same thing at the little island. There before dark and no boats around and by 10:00 several a-holes anchored 20 feet away. I try to avoid weekends at Arthur if at all possible. Way too many butt heads out there. I have caught 2 boats this year on a zaraspook!!!

Ditto to all of that...

It's not just the nighttime striper heads on Arthur that act like that though.  I was out fishing three or four weekends ago.  Launched from 528, went under the bridge and to the second cove on the right.  Had a buddy and his boy in my boat with the goal to put the boy on some fish and generally just have a silly time.  Got up within 20 feet or so of the pads, dropped anchor and got them pitching minnows and catching some crappie and bass.  We were there at dawn and we were the only ones save a sailboat on the other side of the inlet anchored and (presumably) sleeping.  I always cut my motor 100 yards or so from my anchor point (or from other fishermen), drop the trolling motor and quietly buzz in.  Well I watch this guy cruise in, right past my boat, making us bob around like a cork in his wake.  He goes all the way to the back of the cove and starts pitching plastics into the pads.  No big deal right?  That lake is full of pinheads that are careless with their prop wake, it's just something you have to deal with from your fellow hu-man, I guess.  So this guy starts working his way around the pads and before I know it, he's getting uncomfortably close to my boat.  Mind you the entire inlet is free of fishermen except for this one little spot where I'M ANCHORED.  This guy really wants to get in between me and the pads so he just keeps creeping closer and closer with his trolling motor so I finally start launching lures at the side of his boat.  The guy starts glaring at me and drives out and around the back of my boat close enough where I could almost reach out and touch him with my rod tip (staring at me the whole time) and around to the other side where he continued pitching into the pads and eventually started his motor and buzzed out of there stirring everything up and bobbing us around like a cork again.  I ask you, what the hell is wrong with some people?  There's an entire lake and this guy has to fish in my spot?  Now granted, it was a pretty sweet spot if I should say so myself, but I was on the lake at dawn, I dropped my anchor before anyone else got there, we were just quietly pitching minnies and bobbers and having a nice time doing some dumb-fishing.  I don't have the nicest boat, I don't take my fishing all that seriously, I'm just there to show some friends a nice time and have some fun myself.  There are a growing number of guys on the water that think they are entitled to whatever they want just because they take themselves too seriously.

I dunno, I guess there are a--holes everywhere but fishing used to be an activity where *most* people were friendly and shared something in common with their fellow fishermen.  Nowadays, everyone is all about me me me.  They push into tight spots, throw you around with their wake, fish too close, run over your lines, leave their garbage all over the shore, get too drunk, are loud and profane around kids and on and on and on.

People need to wake up man.  It's pretty bad when a good deal of fishermen are intolerant of, and obnoxious to their fellow fishermen.

Yeah, it's ignorant, and I certainly don't condone it. However, why did you think that night would be any different? It's like going to Walnut on the day after the first rain in september, and expecting solitude at the stopsign hole. If you've been night Striper fishing for 18-19 years, then you know that it has been that way at the island for over ten of them.

I know it's not right, and yes it s@cks, but that's the way it is, and has been. It's a primo location, and I like to fish it occasionally. But I don't even THINK about heading there, unless it's been storming all evening , and they ( the storms ) move out just before fishing time. Living less than 10 mins. away does have it's advantages.

"do they know that there is a big flat near the big island??"

Most of them do. That's why it's such a prime spot, and SO many boats ( AND waders ) are there.

 Thanks, Kevin.

Haven't seen another boat or fisherman the last 2 times out while wadein'. What sucked was I didn't have extra line on me & was down to 'bout 25 yrds. on ultralight, so would only cast 15 yrds for 10 yrds of run. The big boys were hungry with the alewive spawn coming to a end/ little bait to contend with . Ended up with the most fun I had in a long time wadeing after 'em after the hook sets. Kept one for Greg since he is in a night Byrd slump. Hooked the stringer 10' off shore. Fished 20 or so min. less than 10 yrds from it & then checked on the fish. Damm coon had it on the bank & had both eyeballs perfectly removed .

Still learnin' somethin'

I agree with all the above frustrations. The islands are always jammed up with to much Elbo to A-hole fishing for me. So I find my own spots, and usually do pretty well. And all I hear is my buddy sitting next to me,frogs and crickets. The way fishing should be....   There are times it looks like New York City out by the islands!

I had a couple of young kids with me one day fishing the old bridge abutment off Barkley Road when two paddle boats of people pulled up DIRECTLY in front of us without a single "excuse us" in order to climb out onto shore. Thankfully, God was faithful as always to help me avoid temptation, and the presence of the kids for whom I needed to set a good example kept me from doing the very bad things I was thinking.

Same area on a different day, I was standing at the break in the horsetail grass picking off bluegills just offshore when this old guy in his canoe (yes, that old guy) slid straight in at me with no warning, no excuse me, nothing. If I hadn't looked up and seen him coming he'd have possibly cut my leg badly if not broken it because he came in with enough speed to beach his canoe. He barely even looked at me before stepping out of his canoe to go get his truck.

These people have no idea how much they should thank God that He changed me from the person I used to be and that I didn't slip back on those occasions!

The thing that really ticks me off is the foul mouths out there. I was fishing with my 8yr old son and several boats were fishing near us and they must have known each other because every other word yelled from their mouths was the "F" word. My son or me don't need to hear that. And we hear it all of the time.
Anyway, we can all rant about the a-holes and although it makes us feel better nothing will change.

I have to admit, that madhouse near the island got me hooked on striper fishing four or five years ago and all in the same night made me swear to myself to never fish there again unless it's midweek or crappy weather.  There's plenty of other spots around to practically have to yourself.  Most with not quite as many fish, but more than enough fish to keep our boat happy and our wives not so happy.

About 2 weeks ago a couple couples with babies & a teenager were about a 1/2 mile down wind from me. It was a beautiful night but the two ladies would say the F word atleast twice per sentence . A hr past & the one couple with the kids left. Right after they pulled out the other **** started the F slangin' all over. I had enough & yelled "If u see Kay"
purdy loud in there dir. That was all it took for her to qiuet down

Lovinbluegills,

That is a sm. craft launch so basicly we are fishin' in there way. I would agree with you on them being more nice but then again they might think we are in the wrong for not gettin' out of their way???

Tonight was dead compared to last night. I kept sayin' to myself this is when you get the BIGGG ONE!!! Whelp I was workin' the shore line sooo slow on the way back when there was the biggest explosion on the end ov my line, 2 sec. later it went limp, " IF YOU SEE KAY" . First break off all year on a fish. Oh well maybe next time.

Crappy

aniewone puttin' RED HOOKS on their lures out there???

I had never seen anybody use the actual bridge pylon before or since, though I do see canoes launched off the lower part pretty much every time I'm there.

Was out last night I managed 4 stripers by 9pm couple 7-8 pounders and one about 12-13 pounds!!!!!!that just about spooled me out. Then trolled some shoreline and pick up a few nice bass and one GIANT I didn't weigh him but he was a couple inches longer than the Golden Ruler. Seen a pile of boats at the Island kinda looked like a parking lot.

very niiiccceee!!!!

Wish I was out but had to work. Work always gets in the way of the important things.

Maybe those red hooks at night are even less visible? Seems to be that when I rotate red vs standard on my hardbaits I get more strikes. Hook-ups are still an issue for me. Its been a slow summer so far for me. Ive lost more fish than Ive caught it seems irregardless of hook color. Im in a major slump.
