stillhed, I'm with you buddy, everyone should go trout fishing. Believe it or not the wiper fishery was pretty much unknown of 5 years ago. Seems it blew up over night. Regardless, the fishing has suffered greatly since then. 10 years ago when I found out about it, we would think nothing of catching 20 or more a night. The fish seemed bigger too.
We would basically catch a wiper with every alewive we had. Seems nowadays theres still tons of alewives but the wipers are less abundant.

as far as 10 pounders go, I would love to see a picture of one. even a 8 pounder.
I guess since we live in the internet age and people like to talk, the fishery will continue to get slammed and that mythical 10 pounder will even be harder too catch.

Guidemaster you must have some bad luck or a bad scale!  I have caught MANY MANY Stripers out of Arthur that were over ten pounds.(MYTHICAL) I think NOT!!!!  Been fishing for stripes there since early 90's when about the only two people fish at night was Spoon and I. We fished 3-5 nights aweek and would never see more one or two other boats out!! Fish numbers were by far higher than now But as far as size  they were 6-8 pounds on the average.   In the past 7-8 years the size has Defiantly got bigger and the numbers are down. I mean there are monsters schools of stripers but the night bite has declined a fair amount do to the masses of night fishermen and the tons of bait, lures being thrown at them. Ya know the lake record is like 19 pounds.  Well good luck        Dave

No...you don't. I live only 2 miles from the "dead sea" and get the chance to fish Arthur 4+ times a week & most of my 10+ lb. stripers have been from 1-6 in the afternoon. Find the baitfish & you'll find the eating machines.

Stillhead, are those big boys because they were caught early in the season and still have eggs, or are they just beasts?  The biggest ones that we have caught were only 8 pounds and I thought they were huge.  Things must be happening up at Moraine, I haven't seen you or heard your brother in a couple weeks over at the Manor.

Exactly.  I might of been pushing it when I said a ''good number'' push 15lbs (don't have a scale)...but they are certainly there, and 10's are definately pretty common!

Nice fish nonetheless Stillhead!

Fare warning to all.  I'm going to be fishing the lake this weekend.  You may want to get there before me, as there may not be any fish left when I'm done!

I need to wash my hands clean of a skunking of the purebreds at the NJ shore this week.  I'm convinced there are no fish in the ocean!

Anyone fishing tonight ? Accuweather says 50%A chance of rain 11PM-2 am . Imagine that . Glad I cancelled my day plans today  no rain until 5PM here in Chicora. **** on these forecasters they don't know thier cornhole from a hole in the ground. Crappy & I will be out so that 50 turned to a 100% chance for precip. Tight lines & dry boats all.

That's right...Sorry,I'm gettin' on board now. I'm lucky I get my shoes on the right feet on a daily basis. I get that A.M./P.M. deal backwards too. Maybe if I took my sun glasses off.

I had a blast this past weekend with a group of family at the cabins.  I love those things.  One of the best mini vacations ever.  I'm not sure if I like the Moraine or Pymatuning ones better...  The fishing was pretty good, got a few wipers, walleye, large mouth, crappie and gills.  I really didn't even fish all that much, but found action just about any time that I did.  The wipers seem to be on the smaller side this year than the past few.  Every one that we got was 24".  I'd say they were the same one, but we decided to bonk a few for the family lunch / campfire dinner.  Good first night trip.  The action should likely get better in a few weeks, maybe get some larger ones too...

Pork,

There is a good year class of smaller ones, but the big ones are still around. It's just that over the past 4-5 days they ( the "matures" ) have been interested in something other than eating. I'd tell you what, but Eggie might jump boards, and delete me

Jim's fish look chubby only because he has skinny arm!

Pork,

24" avg. would be good for me any year. I'd say for me it's more like
22 & a 1/2" or somethin like that for me & 27" plus are very good ones.  Thinkin' the bite tonight is gonna be very late after 2:00 am. from the frost we had the last 2 mornings.

The 20th sound like a good day for the get together?? The nite bite is purdy good from 10:30 'till 2:00 most ov the time around that time of year. If someone wanted to bring snowcones & cotton candy that would be great. I can take care of the rest.

I'd say that average sounds about right to me (22.5"), especially if you are mixing in the 18"ers that will show up as well.  The year before last, most of the fish that I was catching were in the 27" range and much thicker.  I'm pretty sure that I was getting more prespawn females too.  I'm not complaining at all about the 24s, they still gave the drag a good workout.  I'd take an evening with 5-6 24s over 1-2 27s.

I noticed the amount of gizzard shad seems to be on the rise.  The north shore beach area and cabin area was filled with them during the day.  8"-9"ers that are pretty much only cut bait size, or if you really want to go for the 30"ers...

I'm going to try to make it to the picinic, but the closer to July, the less likely I am.  I'll likely fish 1-2 times from July until next year, if I'm lucky!
