sunfishhunter -> Chartiers Creek..... (3/7/2009 6:43:19 PM)

Hey guys, quick question on Chartiers Creek.  Are you legally allowed to fish it at this time?  I know for approved trout waters the answer is no, but Chartiers Creek is not listed as an approved Trout Water, however Little Chartiers Creek is.

These laws are confusing as crap, and for a guy who could care less about Trout it's kind of crazy.  The last thing I want to do is be fishing for Carp and have my equipment taken because of this law below.  any guidance anyone can give would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

Many streams, lakes, ponds, and reservoirs are officially classified as “approved trout waters” (GIS data at PASDA). This means that these waters contain significant portions that are open to public fishing and are stocked with trout. The waters listed here are open to trout harvest during the “extended season” (see Commonwealth Inland Waters). Unlisted tributary streams (those not included in this list of “approved trout waters”) are not open to harvest of trout during the “extended season.” Only approved trout waters and all waters downstream of approved trout waters are open during this period. Spearing fish is not permitted in any of these waters at any time of the year.
These waters are closed to all fishing (including taking of minnows) from March 1 to 8 a.m. on the opening day of the trout season. Some of these waters have been included in the Early Season Trout-Stocked Waters Program and are open from March 1 through March 31. A person shall be deemed to be fishing if he or she has in possession any fishing line, rod, or other device that can be used for fishing while on or in any water or on the banks within 25 feet of any water where fishing is prohibited.
Check with the nearest Fish & Boat Commission office if there is any question about whether or not a water area is “approved.”

Hey there sun.  You cannot fish little chartiers(aka linden creek) untill opening day of trout.  As for chartiers itsself, you can fish all year long.  You cannot fish the out flow of canonsburg lake until opening day of trout also.  Just stay below or right at the confluence of the outflow and chartiers.  I believe the outflow is called little chartiers, but dont quote me on that.

citysticker -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (3/8/2009 1:42:50 PM)

there are signs posted @ chartiers creek by alcosan that say to limit the amount of contact with the water due to sewage overflow that ends up in there.

fisherofmen376 -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (3/8/2009 2:51:54 PM)

yeah, but fishing pittsburgh rivers always means contact with sewage, especially after the rain. Catch em, but don't eat em! Chartiers is closer to alcosan plant than other places though...

Yes, u can fish Chartiers all year.

sunfishhunter -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (3/8/2009 7:42:00 PM)

Thanks guys, went and actually caught a few suckers of all things.  so much for them needing clean water to survive!

joebaker79 -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (3/9/2009 9:01:25 AM)

Suckers are spawning big time right now in Chartiers.  You can catch a lot but it's too early for cats.  Unless you have a bait tank.  Carp were feeding big time Friday and Saturday.  14 fish from 4-10 lbs.

katfishin -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (3/11/2009 7:43:00 PM)

anyone every get any bait out of lower chartiers at all? say from scott down?

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/17/2009 11:39:55 AM)

I fish the chartiers creek downstream from the sewage treatment plant in Canonsburg. I usually wear latex gloves out of fear of something funky in the water, but I have a blast catching smallmouth. I have my few coveted spots that I'm not willing to reveal, but with some water over 4 feet deep and a nice jig with a Berkley power grub will make your arm tired after a couple hours. I was fishing last night for whatever would hit and managed to land three smallies over 15 inches. One was close to 20. I never figured that they would grow to that size in a small stream, but they do.
I also heard someone saying that there may be musky in the lower Chartiers. Is this true? I'm looking to get into some musky, but don't know of anywhere close (within 15mins of Canonsburg) where I can hook up with some. Let me know.

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/17/2009 11:46:45 AM)

to answer your question sunfishhunter, beware of fishing on the little chartiers and surrounding waters when trout season is closed. I learned the hard way. I didn't know that the little chartiers was approved trout waters and was caught smallmouth fishing in it two weeks before trout season. Fortunately, I was let off the hook, but not before my appearance in court. Those game wardens seem to be pretty feisty in the area, so make sure you know by heart all of the regulations before going out.

how is it around bridgeville off of 50 by those baseball fields and that stuff....it looks decent never tried it though

razmatazz05 -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/17/2009 3:17:22 PM)

there were previously tigers stocked in cburg lake.  i've seen one in the stretch below the dam before and have heard of guys catching them in the past.  i've be very surprised if there's any at all left, especially after the big flood that changed the outflow.

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/18/2009 8:07:41 AM)

TransAmWS6,
I've never fished down in Bridgeville, so I wouldn't know how it is. However, I hear that right down below the spillway in Kerwin Heights is loaded with fish. It's the last roadblock before the Ohio River. Does anyone know if there are musky in those parts?

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/18/2009 8:16:43 AM)

I was thinking that right at the mouth of Chartiers Creek would be a good musky spot. I'm pretty new to the fish, so I don't know a whole lot. After catching 30 and 23 inch pickerel in northeast PA, I kinda got hooked to those agressive toothy fish. I'm already fully addicted to fishing, but I think that this has taken it to the next step. Man, my wifes gonna hate me for this one!!!

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/18/2009 8:17:40 AM)

Raz,
How long ago where those tigers stocked in canonsburg lake?

razmatazz05 -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/18/2009 9:14:00 AM)

a while back.  you'd have to search around on the PA state page.  i figure they put them in there to clean up the hold over trout come June/july

TransAmWS6 -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/25/2009 8:25:53 PM)

fished chartiers the other night around boyce road and at char valley high school....caught 1 smallie.

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/26/2009 8:30:25 AM)

I fished Chartiers in Canonsubrg yesterday and caught over 20 smallmouth under 15 inches. They seem to love the chartreuse jigs with a berkly 3'' pumpkin colored power grub. That seems to be a big winner all around.

TransAmWS6 -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/26/2009 12:22:28 PM)

what are some other good spots to try?  did you get most of them in the riffles and fast water?

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/26/2009 1:06:34 PM)

Actually, they all hit in the deep areas before the riffles. Shoot, you could fish just about anywhere that has a little bit of deep water and they will always hit. Try the jig that I told about earlier. What I do is upstream and give it a quick flick. Then let it sit for 10 to 20 seconds. Then dance that thing like crazy. Make it do all sorts of erratic things then let it sit again. Then wind it quickly for about 10 ft. then let it sit again. By alternating the jig behavior like this, I have hits almost 75 percent of the time. Make sure you have a good stock of jigs because by casting upstream, you will lose a bunch. If this technique isn't working for you, use the typical jigging tecnique but let it sit for a while between flicks. There was one time where I had a Musky follow it when I was winding it in. Granted it wasn't in the Chartiers, but I have heard of them hitting small jigs like this. A few weeks ago, I caught a couple nice pickerel in NE PA by using this technique. Check it out and let me know of your success.

fishingis4life -> RE: Chartiers Creek..... (6/26/2009 1:09:08 PM)

However, I can't give away my secret spots because they get very little pressure and the bite is always on. Heck, I've tried my technique just about everywere, high and low pressure, and it seems to work most of the time.
