I see that Jimmy Dallas passed away, without his (and others) vision back in the 60's we would not have the fishery that we enjoy today. I was lucky that my dad was involved in the Erie County Sportsmans League with Jimmy and included me in the early fund raisers for 3CU.

My prayers go out to his family. This is a big lose in our great fishery. Never forget the times I had fishing with this man .

Jimmy was a great guy in general as well as my next door neighbor. He did a lot for the fishery in Erie and for 3CU. Thursday, we lost power and Jimmy was in an electric chair reclined in his house, anyways I went over and helped him get up as he had to go to the bathroom. We talked fishing for a bit and I told him he wont be fishing today because the creeks were so high, he said, thats when you want to go because nobody else will be out and then chuckled. Two days before he passed away he had enough to talk fishing and even let out a laugh. Even this fall I would be outside and he would be loading poles in his truck to go fish. I was very surprised of him passing, he will be greatly missed by myself and many others. Prayers go out to him and his family.

Jimmy did one **** of alot for the fishery! Or should I have said, wocan and who will step up to replace him? I never had the privelage of listening to him in his younger days, the past few I can say, he was hard to understand at times, but always got his point across. I would have loved to hear him speak 20+ years ago! Bobby Hetz is one whom I think has the knowledge, but lacks the speaking/stand up skills that came naturally to Jimmy. Who will followis what I wonder?

In case some of you don't, Jimmy was the ole guy selling buttons at trout run and some of the other streams. I didn't know him well, but I'm sure most people who fished for slimers saw him, even if they didn't know him. He is alot of why you have what you have! (plus alot of people behind him you never heard of {and not the PFBC} or saw.)

The sad thing, is that of the tens of thousands who enjoy this fishery, few know who this man is/was, and the contribution he made. It is safe to say, that without him, and Bobby this fishery might never have existed, let alone become what it has.

The "Steelheaders" of Penna. suffered a great loss. One that too few will be aware of.

"Steelhead Alley" has lost one of, if not, the most iconic and influential individual(s) to be associated with the sport.

I fished with Jimmy over the years. He was dedicated man and a very good fisherman. I will miss seeing him on the creeks,I know that he will be there always on my mind as I fish.

Genuinely saddened to hear that Jimmy D. passed away. What a classy, dedicated guardian of Erie's fishery. Loved to hear his stories and watch his fiery intensity when he spoke from his heart at PF&G meetings, 3CU events or streamside. His smile, ever present toothpick and friendliness were known to thousands. As many have said--he will be remembered -- and missed.

I am sad to hear of Jimmys passing. The man did more than most for our local fishery. I know that right now he is on his way rod in hand to look for new waters to fish and ways to improve them. Jimmy, you will be missed greaty!

Last fall I ran into Jimmy wading up the creek before daylight. We shared my light together. He was 89 years young and still had that fire to keep enjoying this crazy sport we all love.

Jimmy, may the Steelhead be running all year in Heaven. Miss you already.

I remember the first time I met him at Walnut and bought a 3CU button off him. He took the time to explain the organization to me. Very knowledgeable and nice guy.

After reading these responses, it just amazes me with how ONE guy can touch SO MANY people's heart!

At one of the many fundraisers he was associated with he cooked hundreds of chicken halves over a charcoal pit, he sprayed his special sauce on them as they were cooking. It was by far the best chicken I ever ate.

To the members of this board:

On behalf of the family of Jimmy Dallas, I would like to thank you all for your kind words and support.

My Grandfather's one true passion in life was fishing and all that encompasses it. As many of you have noted above, he was not only an avid fisherman, but he was also very involved in the conservation/promotion of the sport.

I am by no means as passionate about fishing as my grandfather was, but I do love to fish, and I attribute this to him introducing the sport to me at a young age.

I believe that the happiest I ever saw him was the day I caught my first Steelhead. I am also fairly certain that his other grandchildren (and his great-grandchildren) got to experience that same look in his eyes when they caught their first fish as well.

I do not think that I fully understood just what my Grandfather meant to the sport in Northwest PA until I went Steelhead fishing with him.

As I'm sure all of you are aware, when the fishing is good, it's quite crowded and it can be very difficult to find a spot to "squeeze in" without intruding on another fisherman's space. But whenever I went with Grandpa down to Walnut Creek, at least 3 or 4 fisherman would recognize him, and offer to let him "squeeze in" next to them.

Many would come up to him throughout the day just to say "hello" or to "buy a button". There were several times when he would run out of buttons on a given day, and when the fisherman who wanted to purchase one found that out, they would just give him the money for it and tell him to give them one the next time they saw him.

As my grandfather got older, his love for fishing increased, even though it became more and more difficult for him to get down to the creek. The last time that my wife and I went with him in November of 2008, he could not even hold a rod due to a carpal tunnel problem in his right hand, but I think he had more fun just watching us catch fish than he would have were he able to catch them himself.

It is completely speculation on my part, but I believe if I could ask him, he would agree with me on this: Jimmy Dallas wanted to leave Steelhead fishing better than what he found it. In my mind, and the mind of many other PA anglers, that is exactly what he did.
