I played basketball in college and many of my teammates were black and close friends of mine. I was always considerate to their issues with racism and would never even think to joke about things like...they sometimes did however, and it often made me feel uncomfortable because I never found it funny. My parents came from Croatia where their families were opressed for centuries by partisans and communists. My father's father was taken away right in front of him when he was a little boy. He never saw his dad ever again! Probably ended up burried in some pit with thousands of other innocent people during the World War. My dad has never asked for special treatment and has always taught his children to respect all others regardless of race, color, religion or whatever. It takes a lot of nerve not to be bitter which, in my view, makes him a pretty **** honorable man. My dad came to this country with $20 in his pocket. He took a lot of ridicule and resistance from ignorant people. Despite all that, he bacame successful through hard work and perserverence. I respect that and hope EVERYBODY learns from it, I know I have. He never felt sorry for himself, asked for handouts or expected special treatment just because he and his ancestors had it tough. I learned a lot from my dad and I love him very much. We don't express that too often, but we just know it. And one of the things he taught me was that everybody deserves a chance, therefore I never judge based on what someone looks like, but rather by his/her actions, attitude and overall personality. Then I make the determination of whether or not I want to make that person a part of my life.
