Are we talking about mushrooms here? I really wish I knew which ones were edible, but don't want to take the chance. And what the heck is a "chicken of the woods"?

Cold -> RE: shrooms (10/8/2008 12:26:21 PM)

I haven't had sheepshead in years!  Dad used to find them on occasion.  What type of woods can I find them in?  (I hope they're not as jealously guarded as Morels...)

griffon -> RE: shrooms (10/8/2008 12:38:35 PM)

google it, they are also known as sulfur shelfs.  Great mushroom, as good as any in the woods if prepared right and still tender.  Be careful what they are growing on... they can be very toxic.

grimm reaper -> RE: shrooms (10/8/2008 9:51:26 PM)

they grow on old oak trees and oak tree stumps

pheasant tail 2 -> RE: shrooms (10/8/2008 10:08:44 PM)

Visted a few honey holes the 3rd week of Sept and picked a few sheephead. Mmmmmmm tasty.

The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms is an excelent book. I carry mine this time of year all the time.

Your talking MUSHROOMS..... shrooms are completely different... taste terrible but can lead to some interesting nights... especially the chocolate covered ones.

Grimm, Chickens can grow on many different species.  If you collect one from a Locust, Cedar or Hemlock and eat it you might not survive.  When they grow on Oaks is when they are best and the most edible.

Actually they're the same thing...  they're umm...  both mushrooms.  It's just that some are just a little more "magical" than others...   [;)]
