powerun -> low & clear it's back (10/7/2008 8:19:27 PM)

well boy's were back to low N clear again. with just a few more fish . we walked up upper elk today . and look's like a lot of last year's honey holes have filled in. and very few fish if any. look's like the mouth's will be packed till we get more water to move more fish. but as i said before very-very few fish in upper elk. some places you can walk 1/2 mile or more with out seeing a fish. and when you find fish it's 1 to 3 . sorry i can't burn a spot. but there are very very few fish in upper elk. if you don't believe me take the walk. maybe after another rain ?  i hope.

MackJ -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/7/2008 8:44:53 PM)

Not really a helpful post unless you intended to direct everyone to the mouths.  This past Sunday, though it seemed upstream had more fish concentrated in deeper runs and pools than at the mouth.  But what might make this a useful thread would be if people could share some of their tips and tactics for low and clear conditions.  I'm not experienced enough with such conditions to offer any help, but I wouldn't mind reading what others' experience has taught them.

powerun -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/7/2008 8:51:25 PM)

no i'm not suggesting any body go to the mouth. just letting you all know the condition's we experianced up the upper end of elk.

ShutUpNFish -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/7/2008 9:02:14 PM)

Keep in mind, these fish are in feeding mode for winter.  There is always a fish somewhere, sometime ready to feed right now.  I doubt that all the fish that ran upstream are running back down to the lake for deeper water.  There are fish throughout the streams to be caught right now, yes its tougher fishing in low and clear situations, but you just got to go out there and do it.  Finally, if you're looking for big numbers of fish, now is probably notthe time to make a long trip to do it.  However, if you're like me and just love to fish, just being out there after them is always rewarding.  Catching some fish along the way, in these conditions, is truely a bonus.

powerun -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/7/2008 9:13:03 PM)

yes shutupnfish i agree time & rain will bring more up. and it was a very good way to learn how

much the creek's changes no only from year to year. but storm or heavy rain. old honeyhole's

dissapear and new ones are created. it allmost like a new adventure every year or trip. i feel

that's part of the enjoyment.

mgolf92 -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 6:24:01 AM)

Expecting a half inch of rain or more today, and the ground is still very moist so most of the rain will runoff into the streams.  Good news!

chrisrowboat -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 7:14:44 AM)

rain?
It looks pretty dry out side right now.
Need some rain with a south wind to bring up the fish.

joebaker79 -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 8:06:20 AM)

It will rain per the radar, but enjoy it because it's going to be warm and sunny for the weekend.  Low, clear, too much sun....fish early and hard.  Lakeshore looks like the best bet for active fish by the weekend.  Calling for 76 and 80 degree temps around Pittsburgh.  High 60's in erie.

Now we're questioning the degree of usefulness of people's topics?  [8|]

You should search the forum.  This topic "low and clear conditions tactics" has been discussed several times in the past.  Both on this board, and on the old boards, to which a link can easily be found.

Bughawk -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 10:56:11 AM)

It's raining in Erie county!!!!  Not sure how much help it will be, but at least some precip is falling.  Liquid sunshine.[:)]

MackJ -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 11:17:37 AM)

If a topic having been discussed before is a reason not to have it discussed again, I'd say it is time to shut the board down.  Forgive me for trying to instigate a useful current topic.  Wouldn't want to see anyone helped with their fishing success.  They may return to Erie several times this season and spend more money on hotels, food, tackle, etc.

Cold -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 11:24:27 AM)

Moving right along...

How far south does the Lake Erie watershed extend down into the state?  Just trying to get an idea of how much of the pretty radar blob will actually end up in the lake.

Good thing it's not your board to shut down then, eh?

I'm trying to help you help yourself.

You're a smart guy.  You can easily find those threads, and get that relevant discussion you're after going in full force.  At the same time you'll help yourself and others.  A win/win, yes?

But I'm willing to help you, because I'm that kind of guy, with a few pointed tips for low and clear conditions, I'm not a bait fisherman, so I'll leave that to others, should they choose to discuss things they've discussed alot in the past.

There are three main water types I look for and different styles of fishing each that I'll follow under these conditions.

Fishing pools:
1. very small flies, with little or no weight, sizes 16-20, fished on light tippets in to pods of fish.  No indicators.   long leaders.  This is very difficult to pull off, and eve more-so if it's at all windy

2. streamers swung and or stripped to elicit angry strikes from agitated, frustrated steelhead.  This is my favorite.  White streamers are effective for me.  Zonkers, clousers, wooly buggers, etc.  Use 3x fluorocarbon minimum, or you'll break off more fish on the strike then you land.

Fishing runs:
1. small nymphs, high stick nymphing, no bobbers, light weights.  Change flies often.

2. streamers, same as pools.

Fishing Broken water:  Any water you can find that has a broken surface, is not glass clear, that may help conceal your approach is absolutely ideal.  Seek it out.  Walk, find it.  Fish it.  and move on if it's not productive.  I'll cover miles some days when it's low and clear, walking much more than I fish searching for good water.  Same techniques, but I'l sometimes go a size or two bigger on the egg flies and nymphs if that's what I want to use.

Bughawk -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 11:41:19 AM)

Cold for most to the PA tribs not very far.  A good rule of thumb is just a little south of I 90.  Elk actually makes it down into the middle of Erie county and the Connie has tributaries that go all the way down into Crawford county.  Most of the streams south of I 90 are part of the French Creek watershed.  So basically if it is raining along the lake shore in Erie county, the tribs will be effected.  If the rain is more inland, say the Erie - Crawford county line, there is little or no effect on the tribs.

Bughawk -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 11:43:43 AM)

D-nymph you are giving away all the secrets...  Good post.  Flash back pheasant tails and small copper johns drifted as a dropper off a small glo bug can be deadly.  Don't forget about the small soft hackles.

MackJ -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 11:43:59 AM)

The eastside waters probably don't drain land much farther south than about 10 miles from the lakeshore; on the west, perhaps 15-20 at most.

Good post D-Nymph, I'd praise you for your helpfulness, but you already handled that yourself.

Still raining here in erie

schlemoc -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 2:57:09 PM)

.08" According to the main page.  I hope we get more than that over the next couple days to spread those fish out for the one fly.  [:D]

pxatim -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 2:59:29 PM)

1/16" wow that's nothing... hopefully we get some more overnight.

Bughawk -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 4:10:02 PM)

I guess weather burning is the next taboo[:)]

Mr.Slickfish -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 6:38:25 PM)

I'll take a turn at "weather burning". I live in Erie and can tell you it only sprinkled here today (wed,8th). No real rain to speak of. The local forecast for the few days is sun, sun, sun. Sorry...I'm taking a garden hose to my honey hole.

genieman77 -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 9:47:36 PM)

as of right now, it doesn't look like enough rain to color the creeks
let alone have them up and running

from looking at this flow chart anyway

Kokanee Killer -> RE: low & clear it's back (10/8/2008 10:23:09 PM)

garden hose funny stuff,sunday was low clear etc but swimming jigs worked for me not lots but they wanted movement, that usually works until we get rain it will do.
