On Saturday about 4:30 I plugged a nice 8 point with an 18 inch inside spread. Not only my first buck, but first deer with the bow. It came in not a half hour after i walked in and at about 25-30 yard i let the arrow fly. Pretty good double lung through the shoulder shot...without practicing with a new string on and peep for about a month. Talk about luck![:D] Other than the rack the chest measurement was 46 inches! Live weight estimate of 290 and field dressed 233. After dragging that thing i wouldnt bet against those estimates. I'll have the pics up soon. Also trying to get them into the Outdoor News.

If measured properly a chest girth of 46 inches would equal a weight of only
205-212 on a whitetail .... NOT 290.. And would not even be close top 233 dressed.....

Most folks measure the girth wrong... they get too far away from the front legs and go around the MIDDLE of the chest... that's not correct for deer...

HOW MUCH DOES YOUR DEER WEIGH ??

How can you determine the live weight of your deer harvest .

Chest girth is the most commonly used measurement to predict deer weight.

Tables have been developed to help determine the live weight of your harvest.
How To Do It...

Take a piece of string and wrap it around the girth of a deer's chest directly behind the front legs. Use light tension on the string. Measure the length of the string in inches and consult the following chart.

Going to pick it up at the processors tommorow. Going to get a weight measurement off of them. Dr., is it even possible to over measure the chest since you measure at the widest part being behind the legs?

great buck congrats

jerminator7777 -> RE: First Bow Deer! (10/13/2008 11:14:22 PM)

Thanks all!

I hit him through the front shoulder and high, but luckily it penetrated through both lungs and he didn't go 60 yards. The butchers measurement was 45 inch. I wasn't aware of how much of a difference in weight that is.
