Grendel -> What I learned (10/5/2008 1:00:02 PM)

I have met and fished with many great personalities over the years.  A good number of these folks have moved on and do not participate in the "discussion" anymore.  I am thinking I have reached that point as well.  However, before doing so, I just wanted to relate a few things I have learned over the years via fishing, discussing, or by being a voyeur.

I learned that:

1.  There is never a need to fish combat (crowded) conditions.

2. Most have no clue as to what proper catch and release is all about.  Rope means certain death, some of these catch and release techniques I have witnessed amounts to slow death.

3. There are many great people involved in these discussions.

4. There are some I would not ask to babysit my pet rock for the weekend (the ones I actually met in person).

5. There is a significant number of well meaning folks out there.  However, there is still a ton of mis-information regarding the steelhead industry.  Time will sort that out.  I will continue to do my best out there to give reliable information to those who do not know better.

6. If the person you are fishing next to is a bother, perhaps you should move.

7. Steelhead are not natural to the tribs.  So there is no need to place illogical regulations on them

8. If more people would spend less time worrying about others (who legally keeps fish and for what reason, who is using a cell phone and for how long and for what purpose), and more time concentrating on themselves and enjoying their leisure time, this world might be a better place.

9. It is better to be the least among the best than to be the best among the least.

10.  It is ok to tip fly with meat.  I read that true purists don't fish for stocked trout.  So much for purity.

I am guilty of violating #8 more times than not.  Hence, my decision to "exit the field."  I need to spend more time working on myself.

See you folks at the Fall Banquet.  Until then, Slainte Mhath!  I leave you with this:

No more Lies - Iron Maiden

(Harris)
There's a darkened sky before me
There's no time to prepare
Salvage a last horizon
But no regrets from me

Maybe I'll be back some other day
To live again just who can say
In what shape or form that I might be
Just another chance for me

A hurried time no disgrace
Instead of racing to conclusion
And wishing all my life away
No-one can stop me now

Time is up it couldn't last
But there's more things I'd like to do
I'm coming back to try again
Someday maybe I'll wait till then

No more lies...

They're all sitting at my table
Talking tall and drinking wine
Their time is up just like me
But they just don't know it yet

So just a word of warning
When you're in your deepest dreams
There's nothing you can hide from
I've got my eye on you

The clock is fast, the hour is near
Eventful past is everclear
My life is set, the time is here
I think I'm coming home

No more lies...

A hurried time, no disgrace
Instead of racing to conclusions
And wishing all your life away
No-one can stop me now

Time is up it couldn't last
But there's more things I have to do
I'm coming back to try again
Don't tell me that this is the end

No more lies...
Doc

Awesome post Grendel. We should make a list of commandments or something we'll all follow this year. Lead by example.

One thing I cannot stress enough. Loitering. I've been caught doing it, and it was tippet I rolled up and tossed on the bank as my buddy hooked into a monster. And I went to help. Undercover WCO got me for forgetting about it.

Either way no excuse, leave nothing but footprints. this means Cigarette butts and everything little thing there is.

I HATE to see a cig butt floating by me in the streams......

What I've learned through meeting many of the folks here, is. Very few, whether view them as the best, or worst among us, are not in reality all that they APPEAR to be on the boards.

Doc,
Your #9 is really great.  I feel like that most of the time I'm on the tribs.  Some folks are better fishermen than me, and I enjoy learning.  Some are just nice to befriend;  Soem are always good for a decent discussion that stretches my thoughts, and latele some are just kind enough to stay with my butt and make sure that if I go down I don't stay down.  You my friend do contribute much to the functioning of these boards and you disappearance would be a loss.   Reconsider if you can but in all things I wish you the best..  See you at the One Fly or the Banquet.

Although I appreciate your decision, I wish you would reconsider.  I enjoy your posts, I guess we seem to agree on more things than not, and, this thread cannot afford to lose a Flyers fan.

Sheeeeeesh Doc is waxing poetic.........

This will bring back a funny memory for ya Doc.

Was cleaning out my "lets just trow it here and I'll put it where it really belongs later" closet and came across a little green rod and reel combo that had a chart. sucker spawn tied to it.  I think that memory ties in very nicely with your number 8.............lol

Welp Doccy,

It has always been a pleasure to spend time on the water with you. Although our first little get together some years back (I think it was you, Kev, Schwacky & me) should have been an indication of the antics to follow in years to come.

Lets review (to the uninformed all of these events occurred on our first meeting).

Kev caught a dog, I witnessed the Schwacky shuffle for the first of many times, Schwacky being secret with his fly selection, Doc "secretly" dripping flies in anise which anyone two miles downstream could smell, and last but not least, the afternoon trip you guided our group up 20 Mile. I would share the details of this little adventure, but I'm still in denial and on prescribed meds to this day.

Go Pens
