Liverache -> Please!!! will someone define middle class (9/27/2008 12:18:15 PM)

It seems everyone is in the middle class if asked. So is the middle class a state of mind or is it determined by how much you make or is it determined by how you manage to get along with what you have. If you ask a politiciian their take is always how much you take home, but the figure is always different if you ask Cong English he has stated that 150k is middle class i heard another congressmen from Pa state it took 250k.,in my mind these 2 figures make these 2 fine congressmen out of their minds. I myself would love to have an income 150k which I consider RICH. I guess my whole point of this is why do the politicians need to fix this segment of the population or am I that much out of touch with the economy

i am with you, brother.  so many who make decisions are out of touch with so many.

I would say 150K puts one in the upper third of the "middle class". At 250K, you are in the top 5% of income, and over 5 times the median income. It's hard to make a case for being "MIDDLE class", when  95% percent of the population earns less.

Liverache -> RE: Please!!! will someone define middle class (9/27/2008 5:57:24 PM)

Ok,, now lets look at this way, I live in Erie and Joe lives in Pitts and Fred lives in NYC, if all 3 of us make the same(100K) am I now in the upper class, Joe the middle and Fred(poor Fred)where should he be, by factoring in cost of living not all incomes (though the same)are not equal, so I wish the candidates would find a new way of trying to define us, if I hear that someone makes between 50-100K i think that is the middle class, where someone else might think otherwise and would right, so in everyones mind except the ultra wealthy and the very poor they are middle class, no one wants say they are rich(upper class) and no one want to say they are poor (lower class)either

Middle class starts where you make too much for any kind of assistance. Don't know where the top limit is, never been there.

boatnik13 -> RE: Please!!! will someone define middle class (9/27/2008 7:49:36 PM)

I think of middle class as this > The biggest cash flow from a single pocket. With out middle class ( lower middle, middle and upper middle or 39k -249k.) the poor can't survive and the rich can't survive. They ( gov. and other groups ) would like us ( middle class ) to keep working till our 70's today and older tomorrow and hope we can't collect retirement. I don't want to point any fingers now so I'll leave it at that. My solution is to have everyone who makes a income from $1 to $ unlimited , pay the same % tax . Not more if you make more and not less if you make less. Lets not punish success , just be = !.  Just my opinion so don't anyone chew me out.

rapala11 -> RE: Please!!! will someone define middle class (9/27/2008 7:59:00 PM)

middle class is when taxes hurt.  the rich don't feel the pinch and the poor are exempt (mercifully) somewhat.

S-10 -> RE: Please!!! will someone define middle class (9/27/2008 8:41:57 PM)

The Median household income in the U.S. in 2007 was $50,233 so in theory a few grand on each side of that is middle class. However, you can visit a dozen sites dealing with the topic and get a half dozen different answers. Some classify it as type of employment, some use the 150K number and some claim it extends to 250K. I think Rapalla11 probably hit it as close as you can.[:)]

I agree with that. A flat percentage with no exemptions.

seems fair for most.  still think the disabled and low income elderly should be given considerations.
