"JEB- I wish I could just go out and fish one, but I don't know anyone that has one to try for a day!  So I could go to a shop and see if I like how it casts but I won't be able to tell what it's like on the water."

Don't know where you're located, but Nechannock Creek (sp), fly shop should be able to put you on the water with one to try.

Spoon- I'm outside of Erie, but I go down to Neshannock every once in a while and I hadn't thought of that.  Bob is great with that kind of stuff so I'll give him a call to see what he has.  Thanks.

TB- thanks for the input...haven't seen any posts from you in a while...

I have a two hander also. I can wrap both hands around it,one on top of the other, and still have plenty sticking out the top...It has never been a benefit on Elk creek however.....

Hey TB, if I get too close we can "cross streams" but sword fighting is a bit extreme...you are taking the "switch thing"way too far Buddy!!

Thats for big water, and have the line to match.  A 10 is hard to land a steel , you need backbone! 11 wi;ll be a battle and take a while.

Swinger man, nobody's gettin' on your case about your opinions, so you don't need to be criticizing their views.  Everyone gets their turn.  I wouldn't be considering an 11' rod if I wasn't interested in getting better mends and drifts.

Thanks
Mike

I am not criticizing anybodys views. I am just saying it the way it is. If you are interested in making better mends and drifts, maybe you should get some lessons instead of a new rod. You dont nead all that stick to fish the small water of PA. If PA had larger water or you travel to larger water then yes a switch rod would be great for you.  Say you get the new rod, all you are going to do is make poor untimely mends with a longer rod. If you get some lessons then you will see that a 9' 6" is all you really nead.

An 11' rod is an easier mending/high-stick nymphing rod than a 9' or 10' rod-  period. No comparison. That doesn't mean that you need an 11' rod, or that you won't catch just as many fish with a 9 1/2' rod- but it's empircal that the longer rod aids in mending and line control. I use my 11' rod all the time on Elk, and other similar-sized streams. Never felt it was a hinderance at all- wouldn't be my first choice on water any smaller though either.

Swinger, I live right near Elk and when I go fishing I spend an entire day.  Like 9 to 5 (this is starting to sound like a real job) and it's a pain in the ass to make big mends to the other side of the creek all day.  I'm just looking at my options.

Well then catch the 500 fish on your side of the creek half the day. Then switch to the other side and catch the other 500 the second part of the day.

Elk is not that large. Very easy to manage even in higher flows.

I know how big it is and I know how to "manage" it quite well.  I sense some hostility towards either Elk Creek or Steelhead in general.  Not sure which?!?!?

No hostility just some honesty. If you "know how to manage it quite well." Why do you think you nead an 11' rod?

I throw a 12'6" spey rod.  Probably be bouncing back and forth between states.  No need to line up my 9' 8 wt for PA.   Those who do not approve of my rod length, be sure to let me know.

I have fished a St. Croix 9.5 foot 7 wt Avid fly rod for the longest time on the tribs and it has served me well for Erie steel and Salmon River Kings / cohos........   This year I have made a few rod purchases:  11 foot 7 wt Winston switch rod--main purpose is Salmon River in NY, but could also be used on lower Elk--is it needed on  lower Elk or any Erie Trib--probably not, but.......   I also bought a 10.5 foot Beulah 9/10 wt switch rod--main reason Salmon Fishing on the Salmon River..........should be sweet..........I have this rod matched with a Loop CLCW Reel with RIO salmon / steelhead 10 wt line--mostly set up for nymphing with the occasional spey type cast...........the 7 wt has Beulah Elixer fly line and a Fly Logic FLO 789 wildberry reel on it--it is set up mostly for spey type casts--but does well with overhead casting also.........these two rods should allow me to fish any trib on Lake Erie or Lake Ontario or any other Great Lake..........I also have a 9.5 foot Sage VT2 6 wt that will see use mostly on Erie Tribs.........I feel the 9.5 foot rods are ideal for Erie Tribs............IMHO  BUT---

I have had three  shoulder surgeries--the latest a hemi-arthroplasty--still have not recovered from that one--and while I was in the military I had my opposite shoulder reconstructed..........so, with all that in mind--lifting my arms to shoulder height and higher is really a pain, literally.........so, roll casting, spey casting etc....is much much easier on my crappy shoulders..........(my crappy shoulders have cost me two careers)

So, although an 11 foot rod is certainly not needed, it would sure be fun for anyone to fish with........I just don't understand why some people get all bent out of shape over what he, she, it should be fishing with........it comes down to personal preferance.........if you want to fish with an Ugly Stik--fine--awesome--go to it......they are great rods......if you want to fish with a Loomis--go for it..........and so on and so forth........it would be pretty boring if we all fished a 9 foot 6 wt with a matte black finish matched with a black reel........I love color----and I love different.......I love Fly Logic reels...........most others love Orvis, Abel, Lamson etc........good for them.....I hope they land a ton of fish.........but I love what I love........and I like what I like.......and that should go for every member on this board.......can't understand the hate for another fisherman who loves to chase the steel....

all I know is that I missed an entire salmon / steely season last year ( one trip to salmon river and one trip to Erie--and both were fun--but fishing just didn't work--my shoulder and arm were and still are, pretty much useless) and I am looking at missing another season ( shoulder still killing me and monetary reasons)  --so, instead of belly aching about who should be using what rod.............get out there and fish.............just my thoughts............so please don't beat me up :-)  Fish On

and really, does it matter what you are fishing with?  Heck NO........
