I would like to try fishing the Salmon River with a fly rod but I only have a 10ft. 7wt. I have used it for Steel Head and big browns but I realize the salmon are a different ball game. Will it handle them or should I invest in a heaver wt. rod?

I fish an 8wt. & have blown it up twice. I since learned you can't attempt to stop them.
Try it out is all I can say. I've caught a couple Salmon on a 5wt. when I had to.

That rod should do fine, but a heavier rod allows you to put a little more pressure on.Two important things would be,make sure your reel has a good smooth drag, and keep your hands on the cork!

When I first started I went up with a 9' 6wt. I will just say that I will do that never again. It was a bit difficult and you really had to play them. This year I got a 10' 8 wt but your 9' 7wt should get the job done.

I'd go a lil heavier----size is up this year.

What's the worst that can happen?  You have a wild time trying to handle fish too big for your rod.  Sounds like fun to me.  There will be smaller fish you will hook that you will be able to bring to hand as well.  Give it a shot to see if you like it before investing in a whole new rig--not a cheap proposition when you include rod, reel, line etc.  Of the entire outfit, the reel is the most important item, as these fish will melt plastic parts on their runs and getting a reel with a good drag is very important.  When fishing for smaller trout and bass, I rate the reel as the least important part of the outfit, but not so with salmon.  Have fun.

The best advice ever.  Resist all temptation to grab the rod above the grip.  It will only lead to disaster.

Thanks for the replys, I guess I'll give the 7wt a shot it won't take long to find out.
