As and Indians fan, I can atleast take pride in the Buccos futility.  Actually, they are the only Pittsburgh team I would root for (big baseball guy).  WTF in this day and age you have to try to be this bad, and reading the points in this article proves that I think they actually did try for this.  Don't even try to say that at least they are tied with the Phillies for 16 losing seasons, that was from 33-48 when some ballplayers were still working at mills on the side.  This is from 92-08.  No reason that MLB should not contract them.  People that go to games should have their pictures posted in the paper the next day.

First point is great.  The Pirates decide their future is Andy Van Slyke and not Barry Bonds.  AVS hit 14 home runs after 1992.  It gets worse from there.  Good read.

very good read, also very sad.

I read that article this morning and thought the same thing.  It is almost a joke to be a pirate fan.  If my radio station cuts to the ball game, I'm incredibly embarassed when I get "caught" tuned in.

As for bonds, I think it was the big money that sent him out of town, not the teams desire to build around  AVS.
But it could have ended there.  Instead, they shipped everyone off...Drabek, Bonilla, Jeff King, Jay Bell, Spanky, Smiley.....

That was a tough time to be a fan.  Almost harder than now.  Almost

You know personally it doesn't matter to me, considering I'm a Yankee fan. But living around here it's always nice to go to PNC on a Summer Saturday night, definately alot of seats left for not that much money.

Also no one should say oh well they're not good because of their payroll. Look at the Devil Rays, must I say more? and then look at the Yankees.. ughh [:@]

Well if you live in/near Pittsburgh almost we have our Pen's and Steelers.

Why stop this year?  I say go for the record.  Since baseball is not football and with no parity, it's almost a done deal that next year they will have a losing season.  Maybe with a few career years and lightning in a bottle they can make a run at 500 but if you really examine everything there is not much there to bring them to competitiveness for a few years.  Then again, that's been said since 92.

Watch this, the owner will go through about 5 managers. Not knowing they can't do anything! Like the great Parcells said "They let you cook the dinner, but not shop for the groceries.." Exactly.

Please.  Put the top 10 teams in a line up and the bottom 10.  I'd bet that would prove well to your theory...

The Devil Rays, Marlins, Indians, Brewers and a few other smaller market, low payroll teams have a much more fan friendly approach to the business.  They suck for a few years, build a team that is competative for a few seasons, then lose their top guys to the Red Sox, Yankees, or whoever wants to throw their cash at them.  They are willing to take a profit hit every few years to do so.  The Pirates owners aren't willing to take the hit.  The profit sharing, and getting money during many deals, makes them the best run smaller market MLB business.

Put in a salary cap, and they'd be in the playoffs within 2-3 years.

Exactly! Let's face it's all about the money. unfortunately, the Pirates can't compete trade wise, yet if they built a strong farm team they'd be half decent. You really see who plays the game for the love, not the money, when contract signings come around. Some players are flexible and are loyal to his team, and some are money hogs.. What has baseball come to?!

PT, do your homework. The Indians are no small market low payroll team. They've been in the top 15 for payrolls for most of the last 15 years. Check out their salaries this year even. Yes they may only finish 500, but have had tons of injuries and are coming off an ALCS year and may be headed to another one. They are committed to winning and committed to spending money to win, something the Pirates and others in similar markets refuse to do.

joebaker79 -> RE: Espn article on Pirates record performance (9/11/2008 10:25:58 PM)

Another thing the Pirates are dead last in, scouting and farm club development. It truly is a place where old players go to die and young players start their careers, only to move on to bigger and better. Ask a soccer fan what its like to be a terminally B league team, never having a chance for a championship, always seeing good players move on, and if the team makes it to A league they can't come close to competing. This is MLB baseball for the most part with a few exceptions.

DanesDad -> RE: Espn article on Pirates record performance (9/12/2008 12:28:40 AM)

Yeah, as a business, the Pirates are probably successful.  As long as they make more than they spend, they are a successful business.  Heres the thing.  I dont want to pay to watch a successful business.  I will pay to see a good team, or even one that may not be good, but I can see that one day they will be.  But I wont pay for the crap that has been presented as major league baseball in Pittsburgh for the last 16 years.  And anyone who is willing to do so, is condoning the business practices of the last 16 years.

GO STEELERS!

We need more people like this.  We need the baseball fans in the burgh to realize that they're not watching baseball, they're watching target practice.  If people stop the revenue, things may change.  Still, it'd take a huge decrease in sales, combined with, most likely, the team getting sold to a baseball fan, not a business man.

I'd just as soon sell the Pirates and put a Cabela's or BPS downtown.[8D]  Then again, I'm biased.  The last time the Pirates made the post-season, I was learning to read. [8|]
