doubletaper -> olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 10:14:34 AM)

Why were Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews Fired — Huh, Demoted, That Is…
Charges of Olbermann and Matthews’ loud and left-leaning liberal bias embarrassing NBC (the network letters chanted during Sarah Palin’s speech) are cited as the reason for the firing of the duo — which were supposed to represent fair and balanced reporting of the election. www.watchfreeepisodes.com

i thought there was no bias or unbalanced reporting on nbc/msnbc?

D-nymph -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 10:31:03 AM)

They were probably fired because not enough people watch their shows, and advertising revenue is down.

The reason for that may be due to the fact that their shows were unwatchable bores.

joebaker79 -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 10:44:00 AM)

Yes it was fair and balanced just like Fox news and CNN.  Funny how O'reilly has been throwing his b.s. for years and republicans now complain about people on the other side doing the same thing.  I say if there is going to be 1 allowed on tv there should be at least 1 on the other side.  Who watches this stuff anyway?  I can't imagine sitting down and listening to an hour of anyone on these news channels.  Even worse yet are the radio channels devoted to conservatives.  If you have ever picked up a phone to call one of these shows you need to look in the mirror and ask yourself wtf you are doing with your life.  Just think, we are talking politics here but at least we all fish and we come to this site for mostly that reason.  There are whole websites for liberals and conservatives and politics that people have thousands of threads for just that and in their off topic section maybe they talk about hobbies or fishing.  I'm about to throw up thinking about it.

Not to get off on a rant or anything.....

Bughawk -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 10:56:54 AM)

joebaker79 for president!!!

I agree there needs to be balance, but more importantly there needs to be a greater effort to focus on the things we all have in common and less on what divides us.  I believe these talking heads from both sides have done a tremendous amount of damage to our country by constantly pushing everyone's buttons.  We need to remember these guys are not public servants, but are in the business of making money.  People like controversy and they know it so that is what they are good at, creating controversy.  Personally I believe we all would be better served if they all got fired and we started having more of a discussion of the issues.

LDD -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 11:27:25 AM)

MSNBC is as bad as FOX news...just in the other way.  Matthews and Olberman are as much journalists as Hannity and O'Reilly are, which is to say not much.  True, they are members of the media, but they are not Journalists.

gobyking -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 11:39:27 AM)

It is all the people on tv now that use the smear tactics and division to keep DC at a standstill with everyone picking sides. Good, I didn't watch them anyway.

S-10 -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 11:39:45 AM)

I think with Olbermann and Matthews you expected that kind of BS----Olbermann wouldn't even have a program if he didn't have O'riley to pick on.The one that really fries me is CNN Kafferty files----They claim to be the best news channel and then let him spout off his anti anything not Obama BS. I thought they were just anti Republican until I started listening to him bash Hillary day after day and talk as if Omama was god. Lets see--pro Obama, anti woman, anti Republican----Palin doesn't stand a chance with him.[:'(]

*snickers* [:D]

For what its worth, they've just been pulled from covering the election exclusively.  They'll still be around, and will probably return to the results of the election after E-Day.  There's no way they'd permanently fire them, they bring the network so many viewers (much like O'Reilley etc.).  The suits must have felt that they were costing the network more viewers than they were bringing in, in this crazy season, when many non-perennial news-watchers are tuning in.  These people arent used to that kind of...media...and get turned off by it.  Thus they've been moved away from those topics until the fervor dies down and they can resume their shows with their usual audience.

doubletaper -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 11:53:32 AM)

sure cold, the new election coverage with olbermann and matthew will be called BS-NBC!

Cold -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 12:16:55 PM)

[8D] Sounds like a political cartoon in the making. [:D]

rsquared -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 12:42:03 PM)

Or PMSNBC with all the whining and moaning and crying that Olberman does on a nightly basis.

But, as Cold correctly pointed out, neither was fired, only taken off of the varsity election coverage team.

Big difference here guys between news REPORTS and news COMMENTARIES.  You should know beyond a shadow of a doubt what you're going to get with Olberman, Matthews, O'Reilly, Hannity & Colmes, Limbaugh, Beck, etc. - a bunch of biased, partisan politics.  You might like some of it, but be honest enough to call a spade a spade.  None of the above are unbiased.  None of the above are journalists in the true sense of the word either.  They are political commentators.

joebaker79 -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 12:53:56 PM)

The daily show showed O'reilly attacking the dems and anyone who was making Palin's preggo daughter an issue and said it was personal.  Then a few months back was actually calling Britney Spears sister a trashy whore and her mother an irresponsible parent for letting her get pregnant.  And this guy is on tv WHY?  I have never seen the hypocrisy as bad on the other side from Olbermann and Mathews.  But maybe I don't watch enough of any of them.

There is a serious problem going on with news at all.  You click on a news story and find out it's someone's blogs.  They report the news then form an opinion on it.  Then people coment on it afterward.  The nonsense of people posting their opinions on every article is out of control.

I thought it was fine with forums like this, but you can't read an ESPN article without their being comments about it.  Guess you can say everyone who is posting on the net has too much time, but at least we on fisherie are in something called a discussion forum, and the common thing we share is fishing, which involves doing something.  Go over to ESPN and read the thousands of people who are bent out of shape over a sports topic.  Sadly it reminds me too much of the Steelers Browns thread on this board.  I love my sports but people need to relax, win or lose we do not contribute or have an impact on the outcome in any way shape or form.  No reason to brag, no reason to feel down or angry.  We still get up and go to work and get the same paycheck every week.  Not to ramble on into different subjects.........

MuskyMastr -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 12:54:25 PM)

Olberman should have stayed at ESPN where he was actually good.  Unfortunatley he was deluded about his talents.

spoonchucker -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 1:08:19 PM)

I always found Mathews to be fair. He asks the tough questions of Both sides, and never allowed either to make statements they couldn't back up. He also called out folks on both sides, when he thought they were trying to lay down the bull. Hardly a "liberal". Obermann, on the other hand, was undoubtedly a hardcore liberal, and a self righteous arse.

spoonchucker -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 1:09:59 PM)

"Olberman should have stayed at ESPN where he was actually good.  Unfortunatley he was deluded about his talents."

Kind of like Steigerwald on KDKA. Ooops, he wasn't much of a sportscater either.

D-nymph -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 1:13:28 PM)

When John Madden and Al Michaels retire, they will be replaced by Keith Olberman and Dan Patrick.

This is why those two are now part of the Football Night in America Sunday evening NBC pre-game show.  They are being groomed for the football broadcast booth.

Cold -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 1:44:12 PM)

No rush on that.  I like me some Madden & Michaels...they're great at their respective roles, unlike nearly all of the other announcers for NFL games.  What happened to Theisman?  I haven't seen him yet this year...not that I'm complaining!

MuskyMastr -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 1:54:05 PM)

I like Theisman.  Madden and Michaels are good too......As long as it isn't Chris Collinsworth, any thing but him.  He and Edmund Nelson are the two worst booth guys I have ever heard.

And now that we have totally hijacked this thread (sorry DT)  Has anyone else seen the ESPN commercials where Jackson, Carter, Berman and Ditka are judging Dancing with the stars and testifying before congress about global warming......Classic!

ESPN fired Theisman and Salisbury and Michael Irvin for being to full of themselves.  Salisbuy also pulled some kind of sexual harrassment type of thing with a few ESPN ladies.

LDD -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 2:09:44 PM)

Tony Cornheiser is the worst in my book...somebody SHUT that guy up!!

doubletaper -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 2:53:11 PM)

aside from sports, to get back on subject[:@], what kind of credentials does one need to become a political analyst or do you just get demoted to it?[8|]

Don't know.  But I'm sure in Olberman's case, to leave ESPN, MSNBC offered him a dollar amount that he couldn't refuse.

Bogeyjoker -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 3:24:14 PM)

Most of you are missing the point.  Matthews and Olberman were supposed to provide "hard news" coverage of the conventions.  Hard news means objective without any noticeable bias.  Partisans commentators, either on the left or right are not paid to give the facts objectively.  They are paid to stir the pot and give their opinions (i.e. Hannity, O'reilly, Colmes, Olberman, Limbaugh, et al) .  The mistake NBC made (well...one of many mistakes NBC makes) was they threw in their partisan hacks to cover hard news and they thought nobody would notice.  Can you imagine Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, or Dan Rather (oops scratch Dan Rather) openly campaigning for a candidate while providing the "hard" news coverage?  If any of you watched any of the MSNBC coverage of the conventions you know what I mean.  Olberman and Matthews looked like they were going to cry after Palin's speech.  Remember Matthews getting tingles up and down his body when Obama gave his speech?  Nothing wrong with liberal or conservative talking heads having their own programs....just don't label it a news program.
As far as having both sides of the political spectrum represented...I don't disagree, as long as you let the free market decide.  Forcing broadcasters to insert programming that doesn't get enough listeners or viewers to pay the bills under the auspices of "fair programming" is socialism.

Fat chance!  You'd be about as successful trying to get Dick Cheney feel any sort of emotion.  Or incorporate a second tone into his voice.[;)]

joebaker79 -> RE: olbermamm, matthews fired!! (9/11/2008 4:00:11 PM)

These programs are watched plenty, otherwise they would not be on tv.  It is a free market, and if people do not watch a channel, it fails.  No one watching, no ads to sell, can't pay to broadcast.  The fact that all news channels are alive and well is proof that not only do people watch, they watch the guys we are criticizing in this thread.  Until someone has enough money to start their own news channel all we can do is not watch.  But too many are and too many love the divisiveness these clowns feed on.  Maybe the sports mentality has gotten to us because I have not seen anyone here say that they have changed their minds on this election.  Its like we are rooting for our favorite team and we refuse to switch sides at any cost.  And anyone who is on the other side (Olbermann, O'reilly) is a lunatic.

Conclusion:  Read your paper more.  Tv news has always taken most of their news from hard written copy.  They show up later in the field than any newspaper reporter unless they are covering something live.  Also papers clearly define a column from news and editorials.  The first thing anyone on tv does is makeup, not worry about the news.  Once they look good for the camera they are reading someone else's work or spouting opinions that anyone could have.  True journalists put their work in permanent ink with facts laid out for the reader.

Not at all, but if you are looking for facts, you'll find more of them in a newspaper then you will online or on tv, which most often rely on reports from print journalists who get the story first, and too often intermix their own twist on the story, which could be an opinion or a stretch of the facts.

I agree with what you are talking about, however what newspaper do you read most often?

Don't bet on it...there are as many if not more ideologues in print as there are on t.v. and radio.
