Hi all,

Do any experienced Erie fisherman want to hook up on my boat, fish and provide a few pointers and expertice?  I don't get up to the lake much due to my and my sons schedules.  I am an experienced fisherman, just getting my ears wet on Erie though.

I am launching out of Walnut this Sunday (may switch to Saturday), bringing up my 13 year old son to fish for Walleye and possibly the occasional Steelhead.  I have a Lund Tyee 1950 with all the right gear (I think) for downriggers, dipseys and planer boards.  Have a 200 HP Optimax and 9.9 kicker. I have gone out about 4 times the last 2 years and have had some small successes.

I would like to have someone teach me and my son some tricks of the trade.  My son is very talkative, and I am still learning, so please have some patience.  Please let me know if you are interested.

Thanks!!

Go to OHIO, once you launch there you will wonder why you bought a lake erie stamp for let alone a PA fishing license....

I agree....at this point, If you're going to invest the money in the gas, you might as well get the OH license too and ensure yourself some success!

Ohio may have some lackluster fishing elsewhere in the state, but they are devoted to Lake Erie.  PA can have my license fee next year...they can find $40 elsewhere to spend on trout fishing.

Don't listen to them traders (LOL)! I can GUARANTEE the fishing is NO BETTER in Ohio RIGHT NOW! If you fish out of Walnut, Northeast or Lampe and go deep you will catch fish. I will be fishing Friday, Sunday and Monday if CB wants to have a little private fishing tournament PA VS. OH Limits and Size, No Bait, with Bait and by Weight, Length, and whatever other stipulations you would like to add! I can't figure out why everyone is so hung up on fishing Ohio. Okay the scool is there right now BUT with a little effort you can catch fish almost anywhere on that lake right now. Especially over where I'm fishing. If I had any brains I would go along with all the fish are in Ohio idea and keep catching 150 to 175 pound boxes of fish every time I go out with no other boats around me at all. If your fishing this weekend PM me and I will help you with good information.

Watch the info you get from "Fat Head" he just had a little trouble with his GPS and knowing where the Canadian border is. He was only a couple miles off. LOL!

In response to your post. I would recommend launching out of Lampe Marina off the Bayfront Highway and heading North stopping to look around 70 fow at the fishfinder. The fish have been moving in and out from around 73 to 100 fw straight off te point and fishing has been excellent. Most fish have been in the bottom 1/3 of the water colum so riggers and dipseys have been the best. Crawler harness if you troll slow 1.2 to 2.1 and spoons/stick baits from 2.2 to 3.0 will do it. The fish have been there for over a month and that is where allot of the guys have been. A long ride out but well worth it. I know of several boats with 30 to 36 eyes + steel almost every trip out. The ditch has been slow in comparison.

I hope this helps, good luck.

Certainly there are fish to be caught out of Erie, PA.  However,  it sounds to me as if this gentleman does not get out to fish that much.  Therefore, is being directed to where his chances would be best at the present time and thats OH without a doubt.  Last year and the year before, the walleye fishing was as good, if not better out of Erie this time of year.  You never know what its going to be like year after year, thats why I like to get both licenses so that I can be versitile enough to fish both states since I'm conveniently located.  Not knocking the fishing out of Erie, PA at all.

Boy you really want to open a can of worms and Jag me...I can play too....

Dont need to fish for bragging rights...not to mention I already know im better than you, and certainly have better social skills with other fishermen...lol...my freezer makes me smile enough...Id rather support the tourneys than fish them im not out there for big fish anyways...(Although im planning on putting a team together for at least the Walleye toruney next year.)

That and i know where im at on the lake when im fishing and have not had any issues with planer boards and a 70 year old mans boat...lol...Boy word travels fast when you screw up and over react....lol

Id put the fish we took last week up against just about anything though.  If i really wanted to sort through walleyes and catch big ones I certainly could.  There were plenty of 8-9lb walleyes caught off bula last weekend we got atleast 3 each day...That and when you post a fishing report and put up numbers that arent divisable by 6 I find it hard to believe you found a "school".

Last weekend we boated over 80 walleyes off Bula in 3 days.  90% of which were 3lbs or bigger and with 4 on board we didnt need to spend over 2hrs on the lake each day running only 5 rods.  Ohio is where the fish are and Ohio caters to Lake Erie Fishermen.  Im not a trader PA made me do this and im taking everyone I can with me, Im telling everyone!!.

Not knocking Erie, PA fishing.  I certainly have caught enough out on those waters, but the fish in Ohio move in with mass quantities every year guaranteed.  Getting licensed this fall and starting chartering Ohio next summer.  Then my opinion will matter...lol

I have fished both very recently on several occassions and here is my take (if it means anything 'Bagger, I launch Conneaut 9 times out of 10, I fish Ohio a LOT)

if its worth anything:

There are a ton of fish off both right now from what I am seeing/catching.  Very few in the middle unfortunately!  I'd forget Walnut and either head to Lampe or Conneaut/'Bula.

The fish off 'Bula are a little "easier" to catch because they aren't as deep as the 'eyes/steelies off the point.  You need to be able to target 70 to 95 for the fish off the point (a little harder for a lot of guys to do because it requires different tackle and/or a TON of line out) and yes, I do believe that they are larger on average.  Off 'Bula the numbers are incredible (and I believe are a bit smaller on average.  Caught a couple in the last couple weeks over there in the 16 to 18" range) and you only have to target 50 to 70, which is easier for most guys to do.

If you go to Conneaut, word to the wise, don't get your license from Snug Harbor.  Jack is insane about licenses, that's why I won't take guests, nor my business there anymore.

CB: Boy you really want to open a can of worms and Jag me...I can play too....

HW: A can of worms... Cool... Hope there big canadian ones! Sounds like fun here we go!

CB: Dont need to fish for bragging rights...not to mention I already know im better than you, and certainly have better social skills with other fishermen...lol...my freezer makes me smile enough...Id rather support the tourneys than fish them im not out there for big fish anyways...(Although im planning on putting a team together for at least the Walleye toruney next year.)

HW: I love to fish for "Braggin rights" and you are sooooo....... far from better than me! I don't need social skills with other fishermen I just share my catch with them! I need a couple more freezers for "My Big Catch". Can't wait to fish against your team! Don't forget to sign up on the Pro side so I can take part of your entrance fee. LOL!

CB: That and i know where im at on the lake when im fishing and have not had any issues with planer boards and a 70 year old mans boat...lol...Boy word travels fast when you screw up and over react....lol

HW: Your buddy from the campground needs a little navigating experience! Being a licensed captain I know who was wrong in that situation! I didn't over react if he was any closer to my boat I could have turned his steering wheel for him. Oh but I forgot his quote" You charter captain's think you own the lake" Stay out west and I'll stay east no traffic to worry about.

CB: Id put the fish we took last week up against just about anything though.

HW: If you want a "school" come on out with me I'll teach you....  3 nice fish thats good for Ohio I guess. when your fishing for 30 to 36 Walleye and your crew drops 13 to 15 fish on a trip it makes it a little harder to get your full tickets 26 -28 still a good number though. I only fish till 1 or 2 everyday anyway.

CB: Last weekend we boated over 80 walleyes off Bula in 3 days.

HW: I see you aren't even getting your limit in "THE SCHOOL" 90% 3lbs or bigger thats the schoolies, I'm looking for an average of 6 plus pounds in our box! I guess thats where "Hawg Wild" comes from. I don't need the state to cater to me I just need somewhere to put my boat in the water so I can fish. I just don't see how Ohio is that much better than PA to fish. Take them all... No more worries about people running over my boards! LOL!

CB: Not knocking Erie, PA fishing.  I certainly have caught enough out on those waters, but the fish in Ohio move in with mass quantities every year guaranteed.  Getting licensed this fall and starting chartering Ohio next summer.  Then my opinion will matter...lol

HW: You can knock Erie, PA fishing and I'll knock the Erie, PA fish... If you want to fish Ohio that's your choice but like Storm Warning (who I must say does very well in PA) you will have to come back to fish PA waters for the EPSFA tourny if you ever get the courage to sign up for one!
Good luck getting your captains license I would recommend Nautical Academics out of Beaver PA for the course. When you do get around to doing it call me I will help you with your application if you need it. The Coast Guard is very thorough in there application process. It takes about 12 weeks to get it back. The initial process is a pain in the *** but it's worth it in the long run. The only downfall is when some guys on the lake think your a charter they look at you differently like you own the lake or something that was once said to me.

HW: By the way this is all in fun with no harm intended CB! Hope to see you at the downrigger outing! Good Luck fishing and stay safe out there!

I think the captains license has gone to your head.....You should change your name to Bigger Big Fathead.  Any yutz with $800 can get a captains license if they really wanted to take the class.

By the way if your using the fishlander blades still your a couple months behind on the up to date product.  I am making them myself now.

Thanks for the posts everyone!  Didn't mean for this to get into a PA vs. OH battle, lol.  I apprecaite the great advice, and will probably launch whereever the help on my boat wants to go.  Although catching fish is great, I really want to learn the equipment and techniques.  I have a good idea, but have never really put it into action yet.

With PA vs. OH, I WANT to fish PA, BUT when I bring friends that don't fish very often a 1 day PA license w\Erie stamp is EXPENSIVE!  I feel bad for them.  The $11 Ohio fee is very reasonable.  I am also heading out Sept 6th with a don't fish often friend and his son, so OH is making more sense everyday as I read the posts.

CB & ShutUp, I always look forward to your posts as they appear to be right on the mark.

If they buy a one day PA license they don't need an Erie stamp but it is still cheaper to go to Ohio.

BIGGER BIG FATHEAD??......................... hmmm........................... MAYBE........................ NO JUST BIG FATHEAD'S OKAY! lol!

Could care less about the captains license just another UNCLE SAM SAVINGS! I'm in this for the personal enjoyment of being out there on my boat and with a few trips a year it's no longer a hobby! I can even share the good times with a few good paying customers now. By the way not any yutz can get a captains license BUT most can! Remember you can't be on drugs, you can't be a felon, and thers a few more you can't be's!

I use a few of your "THESE ARE THE BEST BLADES OUT THERE AND THE PAINT WILL NOT COME OFF BLADES!" BY THE WAY THE PAINT DOES COME OFF! THE FISHLANDER BLADES DO NOT OUTFISH ANY OTHER BLADES! I hope your "UP TO DATE" blades are better than your 2 month old "BEST" blades you sold. What are the new ones called "THE NEW IMPROVED FISH BAGGIN', WALLEYE WACKIN', OHIO'N TRADIN', GOT U', HOOK_UP harnesses"? What part of China do they sell the blanks from?

YOU DON'T NEED THE UP TO DATE EQUIPMENT AND LURES TO CATCH FISH, THE OLD STUFF WORKS JUST FINE ALTHOUGH I'M ADDICTED TO FISHING AND I DO TEND TO BUY THE NEW STUFF AND USE IT.

ANY YUTZ WITH A COUPLE DOLLARS, A COMPUTER AND A HALF OF BRAIN COULD MAKE THERE OWN HARNESSES! JUST HAVE TO HAVE THE DESIRE! I'LL FISH WHILE THEY BUILD MY HARNESSES FOR A COUPLE BUCKS EACH!

ON A SERIOUS NOTE: I HOPE YOU DO WELL WITH YOUR NEW BUSINESS VENTURE AND YOUR NEW PRODUCTS ARE HIGH QUALITY AND COMPETETIVELY PRICED.

Thanks for the kinds words there TEX I keep em as accurate as possible.  Theres no real secret out there and there are plenty of fish to catch and with gas at 3.60 a gallon no sense making a project out of enjoying a day on the water.  September 9th I'm sure i will be able to get out and give you a good heads up on what is cooking in the area before then.  I wont be fishing this weekend...Going to be putting our in stands finally for archery season....Should be up the following weekend weather permitting which would be the 6-7th.

If you are looking for a better launch around Ashtabula Shut Up, I think i am going to launch in the river next time to see how that goes, Lake Shore was very very shallow last weekend.  Im gonna try Keisters Marina down there...they even have a large fillet table there for you as well (im pretty sure if you launch there you can use it when you get in..)

I have enjoyed Ohio fishing this year much more than PA...Better access...Nice safe harbors...and theres alot less egos floating around down there too...lol...It will Spoil you...

Tex, I posted this re: perch boats, but it may help you!
If you're taking your own gear, whether on a "perch boat" or your own, I've found a stiffer rod with braided line (less stretch & better feel) works best for me. Terminal tackle would be a spreader rig (like flounder) or crappie rig. I also use a sabiki rig (used to catch bait in FL), but you have to watch the number of hooks to comply with PA regulations! A 1 oz. sinker gets your hooks down fast and still enables you to feel (along with the non-stretch line) the very light bite. If you have multiple hooks, and have one on, let it go back, and often you'll get doubles or triples! Perch have small mouths - use a small hook - i.e. 4 or 6 or 8, Aberdeen. I've also noticed a hook with a spinner blade will sometimes catch more than just a plain hook - probably because of the flash or flutter effect. Minnows (golden & emeralds) alive or dead, seem to work best (sometimes cut in half), but don't be afraid to try other baits - shrimp, crabs (crawdads-small), worms, etc.! A piece of a nightcrawler is better than a whole one - remember - small mouths. Reeling them in - I keep my rod tip up and reel with steady pressure (no slack - don't "horse") and when they get to the surface keep them coming steadily - no slack!! Usually when you bring them up they are loaded with zebra mussels! If you're not catching anything - check your line often as they can easily steal your bait with their light bite! I use both a spinning rod and baitcaster. If you're still not catching them - move! Even on a "perch boat" switching from sunny side to shaded side or vice versa may help. Don't forget the draminine, bonine, etc. for prevention of seasickness for those who don't have their "sea legs"! Ginger and ginerale are supposed to help also! Don't forget needle nose pliers or hemostats, etc. to assist with hook removal, and a cooler with ice to keep them fresh!

Any day fishing - quite enjoyable - "God does not take away from your life, the time spent fishing!"

Also you'll need to locate the "perch pack" which is usually best found by finding where the other boats are anchored. Out of Walnut go northwest and out of elk go northeast - presently they're located in about 60 -65 feet of water, but don't be afraid to go shallower or deeper. Use a "Danforth" anchor -not too big" and lots of line. If you fish 60 feet of water, you'll need at least three times that length, i.e. 180 - 200'! On your sonar locate the bait fish, particularly with bigger ones lurking nearby. Set your anchor, let your line out all the way to the bottom, raise slightly, keep tension - with braided line, you should be able to feel the bite - if you're using multiple hooks - give some slack after setting the hook on the first one and let go back. You'll be surprised at the numbers of doubles & triples! Recently, I put a piece of night crawler on each of two spreader hooks and was rewarded with a 21" walleye!

Good luck -- tight lines!J

100% satisfaction guarantee.  Free replacement on the blades...Id say they are slightly better...lol

I only represented Fishlander cause they were the only place i could get the product.  Enough good connections were made from that little relationship and now I can produce a higher quality product that is far superior in finish.

BTW...I dont make worm harnesses...now your just insulting one of your own who was trying to help out his organization that you are the president of and its members.

Let me know if I win the Polaris raffle...Amazing how I try to help promote your organization putting up ads and links for you, buying your raffle tickets, donating to your door prizes at your meetings, attending and paying at your outings, but your so quick to degrade and bash what I offer and the products that I at one time used to represent....It lacks class...

thanks Chauncy! I can't believe some of the stuff that goes on in these posts, but guys really really think that it's a competition!  If you're out there fishing and catching fish, enjoying yourself, then who cares?  Leave this garbage out on the lake cause I surely don't want to read a bunch of high school girls posts!!!!!
