sunfishhunter -> Loyalhanna Creek (8/25/2008 2:09:27 PM)

Hey everyone, I'm just wondering if anyone has any info on the Loyalhanna Creek.  I've read a little about the lake, and was wondering how the fishing was along the creek.

Thanks!

What kind of information are you looking for?

sunfishhunter -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (8/25/2008 4:14:55 PM)

I'm mostly looking for species of fish.  I haven't been to the creek since I was a kid, and all I remember are pan fish.

thanks!

A lot of bass right now where I fish. Down past the DHALO area. I have been catching both small and large. The water level has been really low when I was there, saw a few rainbow swimming around the other day, but they weren't at all interested. Great place for trout during the season.

Cold -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (8/25/2008 10:54:22 PM)

There's trout laying in groups up in the upper DHALO, above Mill Creek, but like DnSMcL said, its a damn tough bite.  Managed to get one in mid-July in a white trout magnet, one about a month later on the same, and then just late week I landed a third on an olive beadhead wooly bugger, my first trout on the fly. [:D]  they're out there...they're just too smart for me!

Kingston dam was great action wise a few weeks back...alot of smaller crappie.  Would be good fun for kids, or a guy like me who just likes catching and doesn't need the lunkers.  I'd imagine theyre still around.  Pulled a nice smallie out of there as well while jigging mini-tubes for crappie.

Above Kingston but below the causeway has rock bass in large schools, holding in the deeper holes.  I'd imagine there's trout down there too somewhere, but good luck getting anything past the rock bass to the trout.

That's about all the info I can muster up quickly.  If you'd like to get together to fish it any evenings during the week, just send me a PM or email.  I'm there ALOT, so it's just a matter of figuring out what stretch to fish.

I've had a yen to return to Latrobe and fish around town, but I'm not sure where or if the smallies are biting.

viperjry -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (8/28/2008 12:41:47 PM)

Are there any catfish to be found in the loyalhanna?

Cold -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (8/28/2008 1:32:56 PM)

I'd guess there are SOME, probably most heavily concentrated in or near the backwater of the dam.  I've never seen or caught any in the upper stretches (Ligonier ways), though I've never really fished FOR them either.  Might be bulls or channels scattered throughout, but if you're after flats, I'd guess that the lake would be your best bet.

psu -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (8/28/2008 6:11:09 PM)

There are definitely cats in the deep, slow flats around the town of Latrobe

HardCore Fisher -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (8/28/2008 8:11:37 PM)

I've caught channel cats in the deep hole above Longbridge falls night fishing before.

Lots of cats in the Loyalhanna from Latrobe to Loyalhanna Dam.  Mostly bullheads but there are some rather large channel cats around aswell.

Guys, great information!  Heading up there this weekend, I'm kind of excited.  What about Pike?  I read an article in the Post Gazette that stated they do get up near route 30?

fishrmn -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (8/29/2008 6:12:42 PM)

Never seen any Pike...  But, I and several friends have caught and seen musky in the Loyalhanna from Kingston Dam to Loyalhanna Lake.  All of them were tiger musky I believe.

Went up there this weekend and stayed overnight.  As soon as it got dark the cats were going crazy.  As soon as the line went in a cat would hit it.  Best night of fishing I've had in a long time.  Not to mention the 30" carp Sunfishhunter nailed.

DnSMcL -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/2/2008 5:19:24 PM)

Fished just below the dam today, it was a great day for bass. Must have pulled in nearly 15, one was at least 17". All were biting nicely until around 1 or 2 then things slowed.

TransAmWS6 -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/2/2008 8:40:04 PM)

where is the best place to access this creek, if fishing for bass?  would just like an overall access point and from there i can figure out the rest.

Cold -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/2/2008 9:31:07 PM)

Well it really depends on what section you plan on fishing, as well as if you have a boat, I'm normally after trout, though, so I'm afraid I won't be much help.

71gto -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/2/2008 9:31:34 PM)

Nice carp! He would be worth about $250 in Europe. They are considered a delicacy over there.

DnSMcL -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/3/2008 10:08:02 AM)

Cold: Mind sharing some of the places you access it for trout? The only places I can find easy parking it seems is along 30 west after idlewild. I walk upstream to the bridge but then it seems to be too near private property and such. The further downstream I go the more bass and less trout it seems.

I also go near and at the dam, but nowhere in between.

Thanks!

Cold -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/3/2008 11:31:03 AM)

On 30E, I park near Lady of the Lake, at the pull off mear the mouth of Mill Creek (just before you get to Ligonier), the nature trail parking lot, the vacant lot beside the Loyalhanna fishing post, or justt of of 711S, after making the left and crossing the bridge.  I've also parked on the other side, in small pull offs upstream of the swinging bridge.

If you're fishing between the DHALO and Kingston, you'll do much better for parking on the Rte. 30W side.  Plenty of pull offs from just after Long bridge to Kingston, if you cant find those, idk how you'll find fish (j/k)! [:D]  Seriously, that stretch is loaded with pull offs, though I rarely fish that section as it gets pounded from 1st day on, until most of the trout are caught, get too spooked, or head upstream to the DHALO (where I fish 'em!).  I've pulled several smallies and a ton of rock bass out of the area below the causeway before though, the few times I've fished it.

Below Kingston, I dont hit as much, though there is a place to park just before Sheldon's bridge (Watch that dropoff!  I dont attempt it in my car.)  After that, access is hard to find between there and Latrobe, where access is a fairly simple matter.  This said, it just occurred to me that that stretch might hold great fishing for those with a canoe/kayak, or willing to do some serious hiking.

Still, in my experience, the best fishing is off the beaten path.  The DHALO is awesome, but yeah, you're gonna hafta do a little walking to find the best spots.  Fortunately, its pretty easy to navigate up through there, and there's good spots pretty regularly, though none that I'd say was a true "honey hole", just places where 1-6 fish are holding.  The bite is tough this time of year, though it's still possible to fool em! sunfishhunter -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/3/2008 2:09:50 PM)

Tell me about it, next time I'm going to have to row my canoe over there with a basket of them.

I really have to say that this was probably the best fishing I've done.  Besides getting jabbed by that damn catfish, it was perfect.  The best part was the variety of fish we were catching:

Suckers
Cats
Carp
Rock Bass
Large Mouth
Small Mouth
Blue Gills

I may have even missed a few.  You could have taught a damn fish species class there!

TransAmWS6 -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/3/2008 4:58:06 PM)

anyone with some help on a good access point for bass, pm me if you want     thanks.

DnSMcL -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/5/2008 9:33:07 PM)

There are many people here with a lot more experience than me, but I always manage to get bass on the 30 west spots. The further west, the more bass. There is a pull off on the left of 30 that goes down to a bridge crossing the loyalhanna, fishing near the small spillway there usually produced bass for me.

It really seems to me the further downstream you go the more it turns into mostly bass. Fishing up near the dam I have seen many more species than I did much further downstream.

Many thanks Gold, I will be sure to check them out. The pull offs on 30 are getting boring.

Hit the catfish the other day below the dam, could have reached out and netted them there were so many. Very large, and seemed to scare most of the other fish off or something, as they seemed to be everywhere.. Normally though there is quite a variety there, I have been very happy since venturing off the beaten path below the dam.

p.s. I don't fly fish, so if that changes any of the spots mentioned please let me know. Thanks again Cold!

TransAmWS6 -> RE: Loyalhanna Creek (9/6/2008 4:58:37 AM)

so the bass fishing is better closer to the dam?
