I have been doing alot of fly fishing on Slippery Rock Creek in Butler county lately and have not been catching very much. I cannot seem to find the right flies...

any advice on what could possibly be working would help!

If the fish are rising, use hoppers, ants, and beetles with an adams thrown in there. Otherwise, generic nymphs and streamers.

2 sundays ago caught a big smallie on an olive woolly bugger and 2 trout on a brown bugger. the water was brownish so i didn't try dries. ~dt

If you have slow - moderate flowing water with grass or trees along the banks, throw a black foam beetle and/or an ant. You can't go wrong with these flies for summer trout.

Wade upstream, and slow enough not to send any wakes over top the trout. 12' + leaders with 6x tippet for low/clear conditions.

This is sound advice... trout simply cannot resist a beetle pattern! Here's a neat trick- always carry a small container of fluorescent nail polish on you- you can paint the backs of beetles and ants for visibility (a lot of the "hot spot" beetle patterns have the spot fall off after a little use...)

I agree with fisherboy86, beetles and ants are typically the ticket on any stream this time of year. Also, nymphing in the heavy riffles is a good idea as the water warms. Turn a few rocks and match whatever you see crawling around.

I don't know if the creek you are talking about has tricos, but on most streams near me, the trico spinner falls have been pretty good first thing in the morning. If there are tricos hatching in the creek, you'll notice swarms of them above the riffles, early in the morning. I typically prefer to use the female spinner, instead of the male spinner pattern.

thanks for all the advice

i am just starting to get in to trout fly fishing and have alot of flies but i have never fished late summer with flies

we'll see how it goes!

slippery rock creek in summer is really tough for/on the trout, even if they are in there, the water's so warm....

The problem isn't the right or wrong fly pattern. It's that the water is so warm, trout are struggling to just stay alive in that creek. All their energy goes towards not suffocating. Find a sprin gon that creek, and you'll see a hundred trout on top of each other in 18" of water trying desperately to stay alive. It's actually kind of sad to see.

You'll have better luck with Smallmouths until October.

Or Try Neshannock Creek in Volant.

Last I heard, Neshannock was doing it's typical summer thing, namely being too low, too hot, and fishing poorly for trout, great for smallies... If you're looking for some terrific smallmouth water, try the Neshannock down towards New Castle- bigger water, bigger fish, and not a lot of pressure.

well i found a very good spot where there is alot of fast water and caught a small rainbow, and missed another decent brown trout on a plain 'ol gold spinner, so i figured they were still in there

the water was high and very muddy last night...

i work in new castle so I will have to ask some locals around here about it...

Yeah you'd be lucky to get even the slim amount of trout action these days at Slippery Rock. I fish the Creek in McConnells Mill state park, if you hunt and like to hike take a look there, but anyway its really been slow I have to say. Caught a 15 inch rainbow in some rapids (killer fight!) and missed some on stoneflies early Spring but when July and August comes don't go. Waters warm, and trout are dieing. Overall it becomes a Bass creek. My advice if you do go out in the Summer use big flies and weighs. They're at the bottom.. Good Luck
